What's your hit rate for targeting Cockburn sound Snapper

I know it's called fishing and not catching, but so far my hit rate for targeting the elusive Cockburn sound Snapper is a dismal 0%.

Just wondering if I'm in the same boat as most others with no or little success? (sorry for the pun)

Maybe this would be good for a poll?

Maybe we could swap co-ords, cross off the "No Snapper" ground twice as quick haha. I'm told that persistence pays off, I'm yet to prove it though.

Good luck!

Not familiar with the sound

Mon, 2013-08-19 19:48

Not familiar with the sound myself - what depths are you generally in - trolling may be a way to find them as you can cover more ground- wanting to get a downrigger on my boat to do that in deeper waters here in SA, you'd be suprised how often you'll get them away from any structure and on flat featureless bottoms - maybe moving from place to place

Bathymetry map of Cockburn sound

Mon, 2013-08-19 20:04

Tried most of the lumps on the Eastern Shoal or there abouts shown on the Bathymetry map. (seems to be where most people fish) Maybe the deeper trenches could be where they are hiding?

There is a wealth of info on this site  on pink snapper use the search function, while i know everyone will ask questions  lately on the pink snapper topic to many people are asking questions instead of getting outthere n searching for ground , searching for information on the net this website dvds etc , feels like people just want spots N locations an pretty much anything to make it easy for them catching fish. Get out there n have fun , took me years of research n fishing n ground hunting to find decent fish in the sound.

90 percent

Mon, 2013-08-19 20:55

Has takin a lot of years but our success rate would be up at around 90 percent. Don't all ways bag out but nearly always get at least a couple. Have had some nights when we have released over a dozen big pinks but in saying that spent last Saturday night for nada. Can't remember the last time that was the case, persistence is the key, if this is new to some of you try recording some info like tides ,moon ,time of day ,sunset /sunrise GPS coordinates ext. after a while you will find what conditions work best at different locations. Don't get disheartened keep trying

Thanks for that, will still keep trying and have some news ideas to try out whether they work is yet to be proven.

Don't usually keep records except in my head but after a while you forget the smaller details. After not getting a fish on our last trip I will be officially keeping records from now on because there are certainly certain factors that cause the fish not to bite.

Dhu boi has got it right with the search button, Just look at this small thread. Already we have found out that some skilled anglers get Snapper 90% of the time, they also gave you some hints that tides are important, wind direction also, another told of gravel patches producing and also indicated that they are spotting fish on their sounders but they aren't always biting, if you cant built up knowledge from this website to catch fish ... well ....there are always Charters for some I suppose.
The info is all here, Just read between the lines, and put the time in on the water

You can have my old X52 Lowerance sounder for free if you would like. Still works up to about 100m depth or so. Was also a good excuse to buy a new one.

Tue, 2013-08-20 08:16

I fish out of Hillarys and not Cockburn, but I do pretty well around the inshore reefs from three mile to centaur. Having said that, this is my third winter with my boat and its the first season where I've consistently caught fish. It's all about time on the water and trying different things. Once you crack the code it's rare that you will miss out, so keep persisting and it will come. I work away on a 2/1 roster and I would estimate that my boat has seen around 80 pinkies this winter, so it's very rewarding discovering the secret.

Target the hour each side of

Tue, 2013-08-20 09:40

Target the hour each side of any tide change for best results - low or high doesn't matter much unless in shallower. work form there.
