Sanmar as tailor bait?

Hi all , hitting the beach tomorrow night for tailor.I picked up some sanmar to rig up on

7/0 gangs as bait. Anyone used them much before? Do they stay on better than mulies?

They are definately bigger, so hopefully bigger bait, bigger tailor.

Any feedback welcome. Cheers.

Gardies work very well for Jumbos so I imagine Sanmar would be OK

The gardies down at bluewater were really big, so opted for the sanmar.

But I agree, gardies would be superior in my opinion.

Sanmar?

never heard of Sanmar,i assume its like a scaly mackeral or something?

If you want another way to rig them though,

i have found with any bigger baits for tailor that gangs dont present very well, a gang of 7/0s is a lot of steel.

one way with any bait like a poddy muttet or gardie is to twist light fencing wire so a treble is loose at one end, insert the wire up the fishs arse until the trble is up snug with it.

have the wire the pre-measured with a loop just coming out of the mouth.

Use a snap on your leader to go on the wire loop.

Sounds a bit rough with the thick wire but this is inside the fish and presents well.

I was quizzing the guys at bluewater about alternate ways of rigging other than gangs so that is some good info there .Just discovered these sanmar recently down there, a lot of guys using them instead of mulies for winter tailor, they are a little bit like gardie without the bill but are bigger than mulie but oily like a mulie.

Thanks for the tip, I am already rigged up for tomorrow night but will use your method another time for sure.

 Running them on the gang

Running them on the gang would be fine, keeps things simple. If you want an alternative then a snell rig made up from 40lb coated wire with 2 x 6/0-7/0's would probably work pretty well.

Sanmar

Sanmar are a fish from the Pacific, I think they are called Pacific Saury,I have used them for about 5 months they are oily like mulies but stay on the hook better.I reckon they would be great for floating down a berley trail up around Shark Bay, but will have to wait until next year to find out.

ghost busters?

Yeah been using them for a few years for greenough tailor, they outfish gardies i.m.o ( and there cheaper!)

because of there oil trail. Worst thing with them is they are softer than gars, so you will need some ghost cotton to make them last.

esp around the head area were they will start to break away after a couple of good casts when baitcasting, but if bound up with the cotton there good.

I also always take them to the fishing sess still frozen, and defrost them on the spot, as again they last longer.( gardies can be taken out the night b4)

The reef ledges off greenough are murder on gear so I stopped using big gang sets and just make up some rigs with a 6/0 and a 5/0  c   at the tail end, then a short bit of pre straightes stainless wire

with a 6/0 or 7/0 up at the head. The other trick if you dont know it is to pin the hooks up from the bottom of the bait, and up thru the head, as apposed to putting the hooks in sideways like

a mulie.

I find they swim much straighter and seem to survive the casting without that horrible bunching up or spinning.

I have tried them around the two rocks area with some success , but do even better on small scalies and mulies, so I think there at there best in

big tailor country, good luck , post up how you go.

Well said Quad fisher,

Well said Quad fisher, especially about the heads. I'm gonna take some ghost cotton next time.

They certainly worked well on big winter Tailor around Metro this year and they smashed them fine. I just used 4 x 5/0 gangs and 30lb flouro. Tailor from 55cm - 70cm aren't going to chew up 4 x 5/0s too often and bite you off, so no need to use wire. 7/0s are a little too big, 6/0s at the most. I do use a 3 x 6/0, 1 x 5/0 chemi = 4 ganged setup that works a treat, again just as Quadfisher said.

Just bought 4 packets of fresh vac sealed Sanmars today at $5 each from WA Bait. They can't get small - medium Gardies at all. :(

Landed a 57 and a 59 metro on

Landed a 57 and a 59 metro on them Sunday night and I know of a 76 landed tonight on them. They work. But both me and another regular tailor addict agree...Gardies are best for big winter greens!
