Where did the yellow tail go?

I remmeber 8-9 years ago they would swarn different areas. Many many schools. What happened?

Salmon
Last few years hit them real hard. Seen big school behind island ( yellow tail) while diving for roaches other day 20 m.

Them and pike were the only things we could catch there last week!

I do believe the exellent salmon years we have been having, linked prob to the salmon lic by backs and a weaker Leeuwin
current, has had a effect on baitfish , but even before the salmon numbers picked up in the mid 2000,s, the baitfish numbers do
ebb and flow .
After hitting the same reefs regually around yancep for a decade or more ( sometimes literally!) for morning tailor, we found
baitfish numbers were never the same , some years there were lots of little sized baitfish schools getting hit by tailor, and in other years
almost none.
I have found scalies around the sound tend to pick up after xmas , lets just hope the jetty users know the newer rules, 9 litres mixed bag.
came in a couple years ago , before that it was pretty well open slather.
