Can't say I've ever heard of

Can't say I've ever heard of anyone actually wanting to catch a PJ before but I can go with that. Any of the rock walls along the coast but particularly north mole & hillaries boat harbour should see you get a PJ or two. I find they move in later in the evening, usually after 10pm, simply sending a mulie to the bottom on a paternoster rig will do just fine. You might catch a tailor or two while your doing this & if you get one over 30cm long (minimul legal size) you should seriously consider sending it back out as a live bait for something bigger, maybe a mulloway or a shark.

There's plenty of bream around the burswood to maylands stretch of the river. An early moring down there with a pack of river prawns or some soft plastics will put you in with a good chance of a fish or two.

Pretty much same advice as

Mon, 2012-10-08 11:29

Pretty much same advice as Fossil.

PJ are most active at night, i've caught most of mine off the rocks at Ocean reef (All at nighttime).  Just using mullie for bait, they fed off the bottom.

As for the bream i like around guilford but if you've got a boat probably better to head towards the burswood area for some bigger ones.  I prefer using boney herring for bait, seems to work for me.

Good luck!

Zman grubs are hugely popular

Mon, 2012-10-08 13:04

Zman grubs are hugely popular for bream at the moment. The 65mm Squidgy wriggler in bloodworm is a proven bream taker & is the go to lure on many bream fanatics lists. Almost any of the smaller Gulps will take bream to. Forget the red dot tails for bream, they might work occasionally but I think you will get better results using proven fish takers. I'd rather sacrifice the cheap tails to the blowies while trying for flathead later in the season. I prefer hardbodies myself & my favourites are SX-40, Atomic Shad 40 & StrikePro Micro Vibes. When fishing the hardbodies anywhere between freo & the city there's always a chance of a flathead or tailor as welcome bycatch.

z-man 2.5" grubz in motor

Mon, 2012-10-08 14:21

z-man 2.5" grubz in motor oil, really easy to use for beginners, if you want to try out hard bodies grab a cranka crank and vibes aswell as the ones mentioned above, they will catch you bream and flatty as will the z-man grubz

Pretty much the whole river

Tue, 2012-10-09 05:35

Pretty much the whole river from Midland down to East Freo will hold Bream at the moment but most of them are in the section from Bayswater (Garret Rd Bridge) down to around the Bicton Baths area.

PJ's are not very good fighters so even if you got a big one it wouldn't really give you the test I think your looking for. A big fish is all relative to the gear your using & where your fishing. A kilo of bream among the snags on 2kg gear will give you more of a fight than a 100cm PJ in the surf on 20lb any day. Me & fellow member Cardinal like to spend our time chasing around fish that are mostly around the 1kg mark but we do it in ridiculous places with our bream gear. During winter it was 60-80cm tailor in the nastiest reefs you can find in the metro area on 6lb or 8lb gear. At the moment we go chasing Tarwhine or Bream among bridge pylons etc on 4lb or 2lb, which will test any anglers skill & get thier heart rate up a bit. Chasing small stuff doesn't stop you from trying for something truly big either, most times our first target is tailor, as soon as we get a 30cm tailor each or a herring we send that back out on our heavy gear as a livey for mulloway or whatever else is lurking. That's likely your best approach to if you want something large given that the mulloway are starting to come into the river again. The light stuff will keep you entertained & supplied with bait while you wait for the live bait to get taken. Just last week in the river I got spooled on 6-10kg surf gear running 25lb braid, a heavy drag & a 20cm Herring for bait so don't overlook the river when it comes to hunting big fish, they are in there.
