which is better 585 with 1kw transducer or a new 628 with 600w transducer

I would like input from those with furuno experience.

I currently run a garmin gpsmap750s but I would like to upgrade to a furuno sounder.

I have the option of buying a second hand FCV585 with a 1kw transducer for around $1000 or I can buy a brand new FCV628 with 600w transducer for $1400.

my question is which is the better option? I'm not phased by the difference in screen size between the two. I would like to know if the older FCV585 with the 1kw transducer would out perform the new 628 with a 600w transducer. Or is the newer technology of the FCV628 far superior to the FCV585.

any feedback would be appreciated.

I have purchased 2 furunos a 582 and a 582L from Ebay. The 582 came from the USA and the 582L was local. The 582 was purchased about 5 years ago and the 582L about 3 years ago.
I have not had any trouble with either of them. The 582L was purchased as a space saving option.

In a short answer yes the 585

In a short answer yes the 585 would be better. Esp in deeper water. Only concern would be the age of the unit some being they are over 10 years old.

If I had to pick and I was fishing under 150mtrs I would go the 628 as its a new unit, more functions and warranty. If I wanted to fish deeper water get the 585 as long as you know it still works well. They did have issues with the screens delaminating and I had to send mine back under warranty for water under the screen. If you can try find a 587 as they are a much nicer unit to use.

Easy 585 with 1kw.

The 1kw will out perform the 600w any day of the week all year round.  Get the 1kw mate and you'll never look back.

Yes Vic I purchased a 587 of Ebay. Would have been a real good deal except Customs pinged me..took forever to get it of them and at a cost. Think the price of it was $1240 Aussie $ delivered. Had to pay GST and $50 import cost..still cheap. Most people do not get done by the blood suckers.

Is that because it was over a certain amount? I've bought a tonnne of stuff from the US including my deck wash/live well kit last week and never been stung... yet

 I think postage doesn't

I think postage doesn't factor into the $1000... so next time see if you can pay more postage and less for the actual item to avoid the extra chargers.

 I'm upgrading from a LS6100.

I talked to the guys on Furuno fishing fanatics Facebook page as I was torn between the 588 & 628 and the $1000 difference. Considering that 95% of my fishing is done between 20-100m he recommended the 628 and a careful transducer install. I would basically need to spend an extra $2500 to received the benefits of the 1kw. He showed me a shots of 80m with a 600w trans and the bottom and arches are clear as day and well defined. They also went out to 200m and picked up the bottom and schools of bait and then tested to pick up the bottom at 850m. I'm sure a 588 with 1kw would be better but I'm not in the position to spend another 2.5k on electronics for a difference that I may not even require.

I picked up a deal in Oz of a FCV628 + P66 for $999 delivered. I'll let you know how I go...

If it doesn't work out, Furuno gear has great resale value and I can save more coin!
