checked my pots today for 1 cray (just size) no wonder that great white is hanging around penguin island must be hundreds of pots full of bait in that area
I have done plenty of diving up north but would be a bit weary about diving in the rocky offshore area at the moment hundreds of pots stuffed with bait and the friendly GW that is in the area
Did a dive on the five out from the cut few days ago got a couple reds ready to moult n a soft white. The place was littered with empty shells. So shouldnt be long till they harden up n start moving.
You blokes get a couple this morning did you? We had 2 whites, 1 size and 1 just under. Had the sea lice get into our bait tho, just bones left in the bait boxes.
I wasn't gonna head out tomorrow but I'm going to now coz I've gotta replace all my bait. Think I might of seen you launching today as I was retrieving. I didn't think it was you until I'd gotten home tho.
6ish meter Ali boat, yummy 4 stroke on the back and a large piece of PVC on the port side gunwale? Not sure of time tho, wasn't paying attention. Lane 4 I think it was?
Cool. I'll be out a little later tomorrow so might cross paths, I'll come say gday now I know what your boat looks like. I was staring at your boat in envy this morning, it's a great looking rig!
WAUC had their cray comp at the weekend at Rotto - over 50 freedivers in and around the waters near rotto and at least 30% of the small crays were whites.
I went down to Busso today to see my Super Annuation accountant and he showed me a pic taken yesterday out from Stratham of their catch and probably 90% were whites.
Pulled four pots. Set one that had been ashore for repairs. And our sixth is stuck. We got four whites. All in our last pot pulled. Thought we were coming back empty handed. Again.
My pots arent moving. Theyre heavy bastards. (One has been pulled and dropped about 300m away and had fishing line tangled in the pot)
The ones that have been stuck are smaller pots and put too close to the reef.
We manged to get our five nicely positioned this morning. Could see them through the viewer. All on sand within a metre or two of the reef, and a bit shallower than we have been. All in 7-8 m now.
May leave it for a few days. The pots are bloody heavy and havent moved so i am hoping I'm just unlucky at the moment. Sitting nicely on some sand next to overhangs so I am crossing my fingers.
get a small reef anchor with barbs/prongs only about 150mm long in a small gauge steelabout 6-8mm thick
add some light weight rope onto it , roughly 15 metres of 8-10 mm rope ,
you want it to be like asmall grappling hook ,
then next time your out on the water , pull up on the stuck pot ,get one deckie to pull the stuck pot rope up as tight as you can , and hold the rope like that up against the side of the boat , while you use the water glass/viewer to check out how , where it is stuck , often its the bridle rope that gets stuck tight up against the reef etc,
if you can see it in that shallow depth you can probly get it free with the grapple by dropping the grapple down onto the stuck pot , hook into the free end of the pot and pull it out backwards if your able to ? away from the end that is stuck in the reef etc
you might need to drift over the pot to grapple it ,rather than hold up tight on it , that is sometimes an easier method as well , either way can be sued to free pots up without diving often if you can ''see ''them
had to use this technique again late yesterday arvo in 12 metres to get astuck pot free , takes abit of patience sometimes but it usually will free a pot if you can see it and work out which way it needs to be moved,
often if the ropes are tangled around the reef , it can also be used, once the pot is grappled , you then undo the floats , haul the pot up , and use the motor to pull the ropes back out through the reef , until free , just make sure there are no knots in the rope to jam it up etc
New to potting and 3 pulls nothing, while every one at the boat ramp this morning had crays. Friendly fisheries officer recon I'm not close enough to the reef. Will be trying to set up close with the risk of snagging.
Not that we had much more luck.... get in a bit shallower, get yourself a viewing scope thing, and perhaps later in the morning so the sand / reef definition is easier to see. Use your sounder to make sure what your looking at is rock, not large amounts of weed.
another tip for the blokes who want a cheap water glass /'viewer that will work a treat
get/buy a black 20 litre plastic bucket ,bunnings usually have them cut out a hole in the bottom of it to within 20mm of the bottom edge , then get the local glass factory/window fitter to cut a piece of glass to fit that hole + 10mm,
then pump a bead of clear silicon around the bottom inside of the bucket , drop the piece of glass in cleanly , then pump another bead of silicon around over the top edge of that , smooth of the silicon top and bottom side ,
then put ahouse brick in a clean rag , sit it gently inside the bucket on the glass ,without touching the silicon edge and hang it up overnight for 24hours to let it go off properly
this is the cheapest and best waterglass for checking out your pots you will get
also handy as an extra bucket in the boat , just dont drop your batten hammer into it
if you do smash the glass , simply clean up the bucket and repeat with a new piece of glass
