WHITING HELP

 Guys i need some help.

I have been trying to catch some decent size landbased whiting for the last month or so with very little luck.

Have tried east freo area, E shed, coogee marina and hillarys with only a few very small fish.

Rig i have been using is paternoster rig with ox heart.

What am i doing wrong? are there areas they hang out? What are the best times and tides/moon phase?

Cheers

Try a running sinker, long shank hook and a red bead above the hook. Have as long a leader as possible without going overboard. I have always had good luck with prawns and sand worm but the best bait I have ever used was 28 breast meat. City beach groyne and beside Trig island. Or burley up and use throw net.

Mate for me you're using the perfect rig + bait, I catch shitloads of Whitting on that setup. As other have suggested fish sand patches near rocks/reef. I always catch lots from the northern tip of Ocean Reef Marina (bit of a walk over the rocks). Just cast out as far as you can into the deeper water as if you cast near the rocks all you'll catch is pesky little Tarwhine. Also catch heaps off Hillarys Marina north wall, but you're fighting hoards of blowies there for the most part.

I've caught plenty of whiting

I've caught plenty of whiting from Rous Head

Just pick a spot away from either end of the road running parallel to the rock wall.

Cast out a bit to make sure you get to the sand and avoid the small unwanted fish hanging near the rocks.

If you get trumpeters then move 50m up or down the rocks and try not to burley or you'll bring them in.
