Whiting Lures and Poppers - changing trebles
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2013-11-29 12:11
I have just about had a gut full off the small, shap as hell and get stuck on everything trebles on the small whiting poppers and stickbaits. The post about changing trebles to singles in the casting Mackie lures reminded me to ask.
Has anyone tried this. I know which hooks I would use, but not sure if this would deter the action off these diminutive lures.

Edit: LOL what is shap, its sharp

G'day mate I remove the front
G'day mate I remove the front treble altogether and replace the rear with two small remote single hooks
which stops the tangle and haven't had any trouble with the action.

I have a pack in line hooks
I have a pack in line hooks for bream lures, they are tiny and don't need a split ring and can be slot into lure tow points easily. They are not barb but hyper sharp. They are by Van-fook.
And yeah, I have caught trout on them before.
Alternatively, connect your singles to a strand of assist to your whiting poppers. Chris-fish has done it and score well on the whitings.
If they are bigger lures, you can try Decoy plugging singles and they go down to pretty small size. Again with in line eyes.

Changed all mine recently,
Changed all mine recently, gamakatsu #4 single lure hook on the front and snell 2 #8 owner mosquito hooks to either end of 10lb braid, 3cm apart and hitch it onto the back. There's a pic of a few of them on geographe campaigns Facebook page (haven't figured out how to post pics from my phone on here yet). Easly doubled my hookup rate!

change them out to ecogear ZX
change them out to ecogear ZX assists if you can find em. The best way. Assists being better than straight singles, as the whiting tend to swipe the lure more (especially when spooky/skittish). I have seen the increase in fish using this method!

Cool guys
Looks like a visit to the tackle store, a split ring pliers and some work. Will keep you posted on the success.
I am just sic of the little trebles. They just get stuck to anything they touch, and its a pain removing them (even from a fish), and then the little arms braek with any plier you use.

Yeh I dont think anyone is
Yeh I dont think anyone is using trebbles on their whiting poppers anymore. I use the ZX that Leemo mentioned and Shout assists aswell. Hookup and catch rate will skyrocket after you start using the trailing hooks.

What size
G'day all,
this seems to be popular topic. I am new to Lure fishing for whiting.
Would be interested in suggestions for the single hook size.......the zx's look good .....what size hook would they be?
I was thinking......#8 or #6 ???
Cheers

Make your own assists, way cheaper.
Like I said before, owner Mosquitos #8, $3- for 11 hooks. Make 5 sets of double trail assists for 3 bucks. I work in a tackle store so I should try and sell you the assist hooks that cost a whole lot more, but, if you go to your local and ask for a meter or two of 10lb braid, pretty sure they will just give it to you. $3 instead of $30+ your choice.

Whiting - trebs or assists!
I'm sticking with trebles as my ratio of hooking & landing fish is very high!
I stock the assists and singles for people wanting to re-fit their lure but not for me!
I have tried the assists and preferred my trebs .... each to their own!
The last few trips (each sesh only a few hours) I've hooked approx 24 fish and landed 22 so I'm happy with those odds!
Neels ..... trebs into car carpet/catch bag/towel etc does suck lol

Ok Ryan
Might just have to suck it up and stick with the trebs. At least I know they are shark!!!
So sharp that they grab bloody anything!!!!
Inbetween crab lines have been popping on the flats opposite Bouvard, for zip so far but I expect that we are a little deep in 500mm minimum water due to the boat. Might have to get out and wade shallower.

first thing for me is to
first thing for me is to crush any and all barbs. Saves a very painful hook removal later if you drop one close to your feet and the lure pings out into some flesh. also removal from net/bag is so much easier.
I took off the trebles and tied my own assist hooks using spare 80lb braid to #6 gama octopus, and #4's on my larger lures. i use the process in the jigging thread and a double (catspaw??) to a split. add some silicone thread for bling and youre set. they look pretty slick and are so very much cheaper doing it yourself than exogear xz or vennon assist hooks.
leave the middle hook off as it will just tangle with the assists.
another way is gamakatsu single lure hooks straight to a split onto the lure from both the middle and rear points on the lure.
both ways improved hookups and fish retention greatly for me.
cheers
Wookiee.

Thanks gents
Any advise appreciated, as despite fishing for many many years now, this is new, and you can teach an old fart new tricks.

Yo Neels ......... I just recently filmed down in Mandurah and got a good show for the new series of fishing WA!
I talked about singles versus trebs and that day (usual for me) the trebs did better ..... no right or wrong but what suits each angler!
I will PM some extra info now!
