whiting on lures at east freo?

 Hi

this is my first forum post.  Im a novice angler, reading heaps and not getting out fishing enough!

just wondering if anyone has had any luck with whiting on poppers or walking the dog lures around east freo near the red herring up to zephyrs?

Ive been down to east freo a few times early in the morning 5-8am - to try and catch whiting with no luck.  im not using bait and Im mainly using 50mm poppers and 80mm walking the dog type stickbaits.  realised that ive been trying to catch whiting on the flats in low tide, supposedly not a good idea!

been reading a bit more and some people say the falling tide is supposed to be better for whiting but theres not much falling tide in the mornings around freo unless you want to be up at 2am :)

thinking of trying a falling tide around sunset or around the afternoon but wondering if im wasting my time with the lures at this spot?

any advice appreciated

I've got them wading out in

I've got them wading out in the water opposite shore to the left bank casting poppers around. I just had to wade around a while to find them. But all along that side from the traffic bridge upstream over those flats is good ground to cover

falling tide

supossedly falling tide into sunset is good for whiting to be on the bite.  Monday night coming could be a goer. looks like sunset could be around half way through the falling tide.

mate put a small stinger hook

mate put a small stinger hook on the back of your popper and take the trebel off. the whiting usualy eat the hook when you pause.

thats what the tackle shop

thats what the tackle shop told me too, take both the trebles off and put small decoys on the back only. i think it cost 10 bucks for a pack of 3 doubles stops the little buggers spitting the hooks when they jump and thrash. ive got a river2sea baby rover 50mm and some other berkley. what colour are your lures?

tide flow

trying to take notice of the 'no run no fun' advice..

got hourly tide data for freo and made a flow 'heat map' to check out the run in and run out strengths - looks like it sometimes runs out at over 10cm an hour!

check my march heat map here for fremantle

hope this helps any whiting fishos :)

assist hooks

hey big-o, which tackle shop said that?  i went into a local tackleshop and asked advice about removing the trebles and just having singles, and they said dont bother. i personally think it sounds like a good idea but i am a newbie. i caught a undersize flathead that i had to kill because it was hooked up in multiple points including in the gills. crushed my barbs after that.
