Who use to dive, but now dont - reason
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2016-10-20 10:22
Use to dive for crays, but developed a wheeze during a Hooka dive once, so thought the better off this. But also those biteys out there would almost certainly stop me (down here only)now.
Whats to consensus?

I use to dive regularly with Michael when he was running
Mindarie dive but after all the shark attacks his diver numbers dropped and couldn't get minimum number of divers which left willing divers like myself stuck on land.

Hooka
at rotto, no training or practice of what to do in trouble.got tangled up with the hose trailing me under a reef and lost the. Mouthpiece and couldn't reach it. Couldn't unclip myself and very nearly drowned. Got out of it but massive headache and vomiting saltwater for a while. Very nasty experience so thought stuff it will stick to pots for my crays

I used to dive a lot in my youth, but as I got older it just went onto the back burner, never done a dive course or anything, it was just a natural thing growing up with the ocean close by, living on Garden Island for a time prior to the Navy kicking us off.

A couple of my relatives had their own cottages over there as did quite a few others, we used to stay there for a while when I was a kid. There were several cottages that you could rent, maybe 40 or 50, there was a generator that provided power to some places. There was a shop which was also the post office, my aunties ran that. My uncle skippered the old Trixen on occasions. That was the ferry that ran from Palm Beach to the island. The Navy kicked everyone off in 1973.

Garden Island WA
GI has a rich history and I'm surprised by some of the posts on just how little is known about the place. As a teenage I used to go across to the island via a 12 ft ply dinghy with a 3 1/2 (I think it was) british seagull motor we would camp near the beach or in one of the houses on the island (with the owners permission) and have a hell of a good time. There used to be basically two settlement one at the south end and one at the north end. The shop was at the south end. There was a lot of stuff from ww2 blds etc and if you know where to look there is still a bit of the gun emplacements and tunnels still left.
There is a map showing how the island was subdivide up into blocks for sale, which never came to pass. In the bay there used to be 5- 6 corvettes anchored up awaiting disposal action.
For a full history of what went on etc I'm sure the state library would have it all well documented.

Used to love free diving
Used to love free diving armed with a speargun and paddling out to places like Rocky Point and Supertubes to bodyboard. I was at Bunkers Father's Day in 2011 in the morning and after seeing Boneyards pumping I went back to grab my board only realising then I forgot to replace my snapped leash. Long story short I went fishing instead and Kyle Burdon was taken at the exact spot I was supposed to be surfing at the time I was supposed to be there. Still spooks me to this day.

Fear of sharks
had a bit to do with this as well with me. In the late 80s I was an Equipment Pro windsurfer (never got paid but tested new flash gear which I got to keep). Testing a board a GW chased me in, scared the sh*t out of me, and that was that. Didn't windsurf down south anymore, but did for fun up north.
Still scuba dived because in those days the thought was that it was still saver than swimming/surfing etc.

I dived free then scuba
I dived free then scuba since I was about 15, mate had a shack at Leeman and was the best diving I ever did. Had babies etc and no time, then got fat lol so just gave it up. Too many toothy things in the water now for my liking.

Ears
Used to do a heap of freediving and using tanks and hookah but over time I couldn't clear one ear without heaps of attempts gave it up.
My tank and reg finished up about 100metres north of Two Rocks marina entrance when future son in law and an old mate got swamped while going out to free a pot, they got saved by a crayboat coming in but tank had disappeared.

same as dale
the old man introduced us to free diving as kids , it just seemed natural to swim and dive, then graduated to scuba, never did a dive course or anything , closest lessons was from a mate who had at the time, he passed on a few tips ... I started with just a tank and reg , no bc or wet suit ,
over time I did less diving and used pots more , finally about 10 years ago the quack one day told me to stop before I drowned myself or a mate
seems asthmatics are not supposed to dive !!
never bothered me though lol , always loved it and still chase abs in the shallows

Asthmatic and Scuba don't mix, Charles and Boyle's law will explain this and air-trapping, which could mean Pulmonary barotrauma and then Mr Grim Reaper!!!

Some asthmatics are over diagnosed
So when in doubt you can get a saline challenge done via the Dive medicine (Hyperbaric) Drs at FiSH (Fiona Stanley), formerly at Freo.

Spent a large portion of my early teens in hospital with it so likely wouldn't pass. Funniest part is that my lung capacity tests 140% above the norm which is probably why I am suited to long distance running

yeh crasny , thing is though
yeh crasny , thing is though we never knew we should not dive right from an early age I was encouraged to swim and free dive as much as possible by everyone , I only ever free dived or tanked it to 12-14 metres max , no deco stop usually
carried the ventolin in the sleeve on the wetty, never really had an issues and always felt great after a dive , not until about 2004 that my doctor accidently in conversation discovered I was diving and told me bluntly to stop !!!
so I took his advice and got rid of my gear , I do miss it

Always free dived due to
Always free dived due to growing up with asthma. Did a little scuba on the side in peak cray season. Was tough when my grandfather owned the only boat doing dive charters to the Abrolhos for years. Copped a belt to the ear and a burst eardrum kept me from freediving deeper than 8m for a few years. Finally healed up properly and find I'm just too old and unfit to dive deep and breath hold anymore so went back to scuba.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Obtained my advance divers
Obtained my advance divers ticket in New Zealand back in the mid 80's and dived most weekends North of Auckland and the Poor Nights for scallops etc mostly for fun. Have dived off Fiji and that was a blast with Black tipped reef sharks nibbling at the fins in 100 ft of water where the viz was endless. Have dived all along the Perth coastline and the viz + bitties put me off 15 years ago. Fortunate to have been trained as a back up search and resue diver for the WA police and found some things that would frighten many people. Too old now to participate so fins and other items gathering dust in the shed along with a dive weight belt.

Used to dive most weekends
Weather permitting, lots of solo as well though it is frowned upon......still dive up north but having a white do an unsighted pass and then a second which was seen by both myself and my buddy where we "made like a reef" and then had to ascend from 30 metres keeping the under-carriage as retracted as possible I now only dive late season when water is warmer....only whites bother me all the rest are a buzz to see on any dive

I had something nudge me in the side while I had my head under a ledge chasing a cray out the back of Carnac, I thought it was a shark, definately code brown moment, but was a seal that was trying to get my crays that were in the catch bag that was secured to my weight belt.

Used to dive heaps, but my sinuses have got the better. Used to do a lot of cray pot retrieval. In my latter dives, I'd get a serious dose of vertigo coming up. I used to focus really hard on the rope I was holding onto as i ascended to know which way was up. I then started getting massive headaches and super sensitive to light. Now, i can't get below 3 metres without my head feeling like it may implode, even if freediving.

Love it to much to give up!
Love it to much to give up! When I get to old I think I would have to buy an ROV!
We had our first swim with a GW earlier this year while doing a Deco out on the 36m line out of Port Kennedy.
Seen a school off sambos come up along the mermaid line so I shot a small one for me mates wife's green fish curry only to nearly make my own as a approx. 4.5M girl came out of the back of the same school and glided by for a look!
It went past like a bus just glad it didn't pull up at our stop!
I personally feel the Shark shield did the job with myself and my mate both had one on at the time.

Times have changed
Keen surfer first, fishing and diving second when starting out over 25 years ago.
Alot less diving now primarily due to ear/vertigo issues. But can't deny sharks also play on my mind these days.
So fishing has taken first place of priorities.
Do tell myself it can't happen twice, and certainly no disrespect to the bloke and his family that I do share the same name as that was taken by a GW surfing in our South West.
But it does get mentioned by my family it could very easily have been me.....
This is something we did every week end from the very early 90s like 1990 through to the late nineties and never had a issue.
Do worry for my kids when they're old enough to get right into it that there are more predators around now.

Grew up snorkelling and always being in the water as a kid I got my divers ticket in my late 20s as I loved the underwater it's a different world down there .....
Then a few shark attacks in quick succession plus seeing big white outa two rocks a couple of years ago Put a stop to that... I love and miss it so much but can't bring my self to jump in and being eaten like that poor bloke retreaving the stuck anchor after his dive

Hookah Diving
I have Dived on the Hookah since my teens and my dad for at least 45years he is still going strong. I would prefer to get eaten by a shark doing something i love that hit by a car on the way to work.
It is still one of the safest ways to Dive, i will be under there soon with no phones or crap to worry about.
5 people got taken by Sharks last year over 2000 young men committed suicide enjoy the water guys.

I have grown up around the water and always been in it or on it in one form or another.
Started off free diving and then scuba.
worked on a dive boat out of Cairns and dived the outer reef as well as the Kimberleys for trepang and trochus shells, 90% free diving and 10% hookah.
I loved it and could comfortably free dive to 20m all day 7 days a week.
That was a quite a few years ago now when I was young, fit and didn't give a shit.
Now I am a bit older, not quite as fit and think about the dangers a bit to much.!
My fishing spots are so secret........... even the fish don't know where they are !!

kiwi mate of mine
a good mate of mine (he used to live at my place in Dampier when he wasnt offshore) was the diving boss of Stoltt offshore , he was an ex nz navy clerance diver , and 1 of the best free divers i have seen (even though he would suck down 30 durries a day) he gave his diving away for years after he did the body recovery job on the harmony and the pamilia after cyclone bobby , apparently the WA police divers demmed it to risky a job , so toddy did it it when got home to my place he was buggered for ages ,
