why buy other braids?
Submitted by anypuddle on Sat, 2014-09-06 21:14
When you read Paulus (-just fishing) site and his qualifications, why do we buy any other braid but tasline? .I'm far from any kind of expert and only have one reel loaded with tasline 85lb. - but the stuff just doesn't break. Currently searching for some 8lb braid for freshwater and the tasline- sas 6,8,and 12lb seem too good, the diameters are unbelievable. Even Paulus says specific knots are required for leaders etc.. thoughts?

mmm anything is possible..
Cheers jackfrost - personally I think not, have you read the whole site? ie medical and industry manufacturer of testing equipment to NASA and Boeing standards etc etc,on the australian and NZ standards board etc etc. The 85lb I have is awesome stuff. anyone actually able to report on the POOR quality of tasline? will be interesting.

My favourite is ygk wx4 or wx8. 4 is a bit stiffer than 8 but cheaper. Incredibly thin diameter for the breaking strain and i have never snapped the line from 4lb up to 30lb.

Just had a search and Plenty
Just had a search and Plenty of SAS and Tasline posts on there not sure any of it has been deleted but maybe it should have. All the good and the bad. Did not see them as a site sponsor so not sure why they would delete posts.

Sorry to the mods if this is not acceptable please delete if it is.
Braid is just a fishing line stay with it if you like it move to the next if you don't. Personally I like to shop Australian made wherever I can and find Platypus braid and monos to do most everything I want.

i use daiwa boat braid coz it is a reasonable price and never let me down. No idea how it compares to others.
tasline probably great, just only one guy selling it, so not many have tried I guess.

I use boat braid as well,
I use boat braid as well, PE3,4,5,6. Great value 8 strand. Pitty they don't make it in PE2. I used YGK 4 strand PE2 and ok but not great. Tufline and pro braid are crap, but great for cutting your buddies expensive Varivas if you cross lines while on good fish,,,,,,

boat braid
Thanks fellas, (gday Ricey(:)I agree I reckon daiwa boat braid is great but
= 45.64 lbs versus 77.49 lbs Same diameter - quite a difference. Made me think anyway
Daiwa Saltiga Boat
Stated lb kg D=.mm Test lb(A) kg (A) lb (B) D high D wide D (A)
multi metered
40lb ( Pe3 breaking-45.64lb) 20.75 46.1 0.255 0.365 diameter 0.31
Tasline white 12 st x 75d 08,12 40lb = (Pe3 breaking at-77.49lb) 35.22 77.82 0.285 0.336 diameter-0.310
Not knocking boat braid just comparing, anyway im sure everyone is able to check the specs themselves (:

There is only a couple of
There is only a couple of factories in the world that make stranded braid excluding 'fused' braid
Some braids are treated with softeners etc to give them a smoother feel.
Brands can buy braid out of the same factory and state at what ever breaking strain the brand wants for different reasons. Knot strength, extra conditioners blah blah
Its why we have 'pretest' products like platypus braid. Not to be confused with IGFA 'line class' products
A 'pretest' product must break 'on or under' its breaking strain line class for competition or its not valid for that line class or world records etc.
What is stated as a breaking strain and what a line product 'actually' breaks at is another thing.
Lines can also break at different breaking strains in the same length of line. It is not necessarily consistent
There has been many a disappointment when people send off line for line testing for competition or record claim to be told line broke 'above' stated line class

Note, products like Platypus
Note, products like Platypus pretest have the breaking strain they broke at on the testing machine prior to going out the factory printed on the line spool.
That way when people are fishing competition or they state they caught a 10 kilo Dolphinfish on 1kg pretest, it actually was 1kg line class; not line with an actual breaking strain of 1.63kg which is the 2kg line class.
So if your line breaks in the next line class from 1 kg to 2kg, essentially your competition points for each fish will halve or you wont be applicable for a world record in that line class.

Pretty much all my line is
Pretty much all my line is Tasline now. It's excellent and its breaking strain is tested every 2000 meters I think, so you know what's on your reel. Paulus still sells it as 6lb, 10lb etc, but the spool will say the actual breaking strain - hand written. So if you want 20lb and no more, you can buy the 12lb and know that it will break at 18lb (or whatever is written on the spool). It's really well priced too, so I won't be going anywhere any time soon.

Can anyone comment on the lower line class tasline? Might have to give this stuff a go! Although I agree that frogline won't let you down

There is so many braids out
There is so many braids out there Im just confused. So have a mixture on different rigs. Ranging from pretty cheap, mostly have Finns (I have been a fan of this for ages). My goto reels for most situations however I have spooled with what I consider is Bling - all Varivas but initially it is exxy. However it has never failed me. Had a few initial joins to leader fail due to my poor technique at the time, but now have it sussed.
What I have found is with other braids they fray after some time and appears "fluffy". All I do is reverse the braid but this is a bit of a job. Havent yet had to do this to varivas.
But havent tried tasline so cant comment on that.

Have had a few braids, most of them good and nothing wrong with them. But just not as good as tasline. Thin and strong, and cheap. Easily the best braid.

I have 6lb Tasline that breaks at about 8lb, but its extremely fine. Tying it can be a bit of a mission.

I use 6lb tasline on my bream gear. As thin as 2lb fire line. Because of it small diameter it casts extremely well. Never had a problem with wind knots. Only problem I find is its too thin for my eyesite even with glasses. Gunna change it up to 10-12lb which is still equivalent to 6-8lb in most other brands. Also have the pe2.5 which is rated to a tad under 50lb but yet to try it out.
