why do people use the word pass ?

bit of an odd subject ,but
something that really prickles me in the last few years is when someone dies you hear all these people saying they passed ...makes me ask what did they pass ?? a car ? a bus ? what ?
Australians haven't suddenly got super religious have they ?
people don't say passed away or died , just passed ? why are so many using this word ?
to me its an American term that just doesn't fit in here .
any thoughts on why people here seem to have adopted this term in the last few years as you hear it more and more or is that my wrong impression ?

Difficult
I guess death is one of those things hard to deal with, hard to talk about so when sayin the correct word is hard, the abbreviated substitue word for death or died makes it a bit easier I suppose. Passed away or passed just seems more peaceful instead of died
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

I agree with tim-o. (did I say that out loud?). I think it is an easier way. almost 16 years on and I still refer to my father's passing that way. I also think it is a little bit more compassionate than saying he / she died, or he / she is dead. that just sounds a little disrespectful for me.

My old man carked it back in 1991. About a year after my mum fell off the perch.

No offence Dale but your
No offence Dale but your choice of words to describe the "passing" of your parents was just perfect.
