At the end of the last day before we left, we put a fish on a hook to show how many sharks were around.

we figured if we fell in, there would be a space of about 20 seconds in which to escape. If not, you drown, or get eaten by sharks.

Thats nuts
Not even worth throwing a line in unless you are fishing for sharks by the look of it!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Brings back memories
We did the same with a couple of mackeral frames and had fun watching them take it.
Same sharks we had back in November. Only time we could get fish past was either double hook up and we might get one fish past or freespool to wear out the fish then reel in as fast as you could.
