Willie positive for cannabis - new charge
WEST Coast forward Willie Rioli has returned a positive sample for a metabolite of cannabis in a separate ASADA test to that currently under investigation for urine substitution.
Rioli was tested following the Eagles' elimination final victory over Essendon September 5.
His sample contained the metabolite of cannabis, which is an in-competition prohibited substance under the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code.
Read the AFL's statement on Willie Rioli here
It comes after he allegedly substituted urine during an out-of-competition doping control test on August 20.
He is currently provisionally suspended while that investigation takes place and is facing a ban of up to four years.
Rioli's provisional ban kept him out of the Eagles' semi-final against Geelong and rocked West Coast just two days out from the season-ending loss.

There’s lots of precedent in
There’s lots of precedent in the ASADA/USADA/WADA positive result records
for a first time positive in competition result for cannabinoids the most common punishment is a ban of 3 to 6 months although there are heaps of no bans and just a public admission of guilt (public shaming)
for a non analytical- tampering first time offence it’s usually a ban of around 6 months.
probably a safe bet that Willie at a minimum won’t be playing in 2020.
if only his name was Buddy Franklin then the AFL would right it all off as mental health.
massive penalty for a substance that is hardly performance enhancing.

The reason ASADA has it as a
The reason ASADA has it as a perfomance enhancing drug is that shooters and archers have been know to use it in the past as it has a calming effect on hear rates etc. Totally agree in this situation it's not the case but it's their rules. The boy is in deep shit either way, what a waste.

Depends what he was talking
Depends what he was talking about specifically.
THC raises heart rate
CBD oils without THC have been shown in some studies to reduce heart rates when under stress.
if Willie smoked marijuana which includes THC he would have increased his heart rate.
if the bloke on the radio was talking about CBD oils then he would have been right.
we still don’t know if Willies cannabinoid metabolites are from marijuana or cbd oils

Thanks for that info Andy, I
Thanks for that info Andy, I must try it sometime!
I think his biggest issue now is there will be no more feeling sorry for the boy that couldn't wee.
Generally the only people that can't piss are those that are hiding something, he was obviously very very nervous and held off until the opportunity presented to smear the test.
I'm afraid that's career over for the boy.
I think some of his peers will have a bit too answer for here, I couldn't see the same scenario happening for Daniel nor Cyril.

Performance
It might not be performance enhancing but it can give unfair advantages in recovery such as aiding sleep.
Either way if it is deemed a banned substance then it is.

Apparently the two sanctions
Apparently the two sanctions will run concurrently, so whichever is longer will be the total ban time - guessing that will be the tampering.
I am a diehard WCE supporter - they will need to start a nuffies page just for eagles fans soon, some of the content I've seen online is hilarious.
"he's made a mistake", give him a break (yep, he will get a break alright) - seems like the fella has made a number of serious mistakes, rather than 'lil' ones. I work in construction and have done for 10 + years, part of the job is don't take drugs as chances are you may be busted one day, so I don't. Performance enhancing or not, it doesn't matter they are the rules. I have a list as long as my arm of rules that I don't like but I abide by them to keep my job - and that's a job where I wake up at 5am to earn a crust. Not wake up and go kick a footy with my mates and all the other good stuff that comes with being a league footballer.
The eagles were building a case that he tampered because he couldn't piss then gets done with bud in his system shortly after - makes the club look bloody stupid! Pretty clear now why he 'couldn't piss'.
On top of all that they are keeping him on the list for next year - Yep, I wish I could get done at a drug test at work, take the following year off an get paid!

Timboon - Wouldn't think so. The fact that he has tested positive to cannabis hardly means its systemic of a whole club.

Hey Vic, why don't you post
Hey Vic, why don't you post your evidence of the Buddy strikes as evidence. You seem to be suggesting he hasn't had any mental health issues.
I suggest after recent events you should perhaps be really cautious as to what accusations you throw around.

I have family that live in Bondi and are in amongst the cool crowd and they have seen buddy personally on several occasions at high end parties snorting coke. That’s good enough evidence for me.

Noxious, It's awesome how
Noxious,
It's awesome how patriotic some of you fellas are but also really quite funny.
If it was happening down the road blokes like yourself would be the first to jump up n down about it.
Ben Cousins, Chris Mainwaring ( rip from a drug over dose ) Michael Gardner, Daniel Chic, Craig Turley, Daniel Kerr and even Chris Judd in his hay Day were all well known in the scene.
Last year Liam Ryan crashed his car at daylight, I'm not sure when the last time you drank until daylight was but I find it a pretty hard task to do unless on the drugs.
Now Willie....
Sumich would be in the know, pointed it out and Simpson went into defence mode.
I guess Simpson wasn't expecting the positive test to come out.
Some pretty serious decisions to be made at the Eagles, they wouldn't want to go into next year with a massive grey area cloud over the club's head.
Just my opinion of course

People need to pull their
People need to pull their heads out of the sand, it is no doubt happening at all clubs, just a matter of whether it is exposed and made public.
The afl 3 strike and keeping things a secret is not helping, when guys know they can get caught twice and get away with it what’s to stop them.
An afl team is made up of some 44 players, stats in the past show 28% of people aged 20-29 years used illicit drugs in the previous 12 months, its highly likely there’s more than one or two drug users on any of the AFL teams after all they are only human and susceptible to making bad choices.

It happened down the road -
It happened down the road - one bloke getting caught with his pants down at a kebab shop and with coke doesn't meant the whole club is into going to kebab stores with their pants down does it? Old mate Stephenson at the black and white did something bloody stupid and no I don't think the entire club is gambling... Individuals amongst organisations are capable of doing dumb things without it implying that the whole organisation is doing the same.
The list of players that you have provided havn't put on an eagles jumper for 10 + years? I'm not sure how they link into the culture of the current playing group. I wonder if your grandchildren will tell their grandchildren of Ben Cousins and Daniel Prick?
Drinking until sunrise was a common occurance in my early twenties - doesn't mean you've taken drugs just that you've paced yourself rather than getting shit faced 3 hours in ending up a chundering mess.

Well said Vic,
I agree for the most part...
I don't know of a better way than the current AFL policy as in my opinion they will experiment!
3 strikes is always debated but at the end of the day do we have any major ssue within the AFL as far as drug related crime/medical conditions go? I don't think so do I'd say it's working

The 3 strikes exists because
The 3 strikes exists because recreational drug taking is rife in today's society at all levels, particularly young men. Patricularly when they have a tonne of cash, and everyone wants to be their friend. One strike and you're out for good... the AFL is not going to rub out a good chunk of their league or tarnish the names of stars that make them money by revealing who has failed their drug tests.
How marketable would Buddy be if he failed a couple drug tests and everyone knew about it? Not that I'm saying that's the case.
