Wire trolling for macks
Submitted by ricey on Sun, 2013-03-10 17:57
So if I decide I want to use wire , what wire leader is best and what length?
the premade ones I have are short (40 cm) and snap swivels look bit dodgy.
not super keen on own made ones as tried the weld type and was not sure it would hold? Want lure to swim true.
how many roll the dice and don't use wire at all?

When targetting macks i usually use 50cm of braided trace with crimps and a wrap through (not sure what its called ?) and get the heavy duty swivels (shogun torpedo or alike. Do use the solid trace too and twist it up.

The weld lock wire should be
The weld lock wire should be fine, caught a few nice sharks on it , if done properly should never pull free, fish will bite through it before the welded twists fail.
Do use a flemish eye type "knot" before you twist and melt though

single strand
100lb single strand is what you want , haywire twist each end with a barrel swivel to connect to main line.

Definitely single stand wire
Definitely single stand wire is the best, mono may give more hookups but you will get bust offs. But generally mackies arent that fussy on the wire and will chase anything that is trolled quickly. And single strand is the thinnest, but keep it short 30 to 50cm, and use black swivels.

A search on fleabay for Retwistable Haywire results in a US seller, first link included to show how they twist together and have a sleeve that snuggs down on the haywire twist.

No Wire
I think its questionable to have to use wire?
I just run mono wind on straight through to a decent size snap swivel, not often you will get hit above the snap.

Oh
and to my comment above never a shiny swivel, Gold ones and the silver richter swivels, even though they are class, gets bitten much more than black.
