Wow, my boats at the doctors.
Well, that's me out of the water for a while.
When I bought my boat 8 mths ago, I knew it needed a bit of attention to the hull, in particular the keel. It had been given a DIY fiberglass makeover & I just knew one day it would have to be done professionaly.
I went through the yellow directory this morning & tried a few numbers. I tried 5 numbers, 3 were too busy, one went to message bank & only one was interested. After a short chat over the phone, I tried to get a rough idea of price. I was told in the region of $1500 & $2000.
Not bad I thought, that's about what I was expecting. He said they had a quite spell, so I went home, fetched the boat & set off to Wangara. A fair trek from Maddington.
I arrived at the place, the guy came out, rolled under the boat & all I heard was that sharp intake of breath that mechanics make. You know, the one that means it's gonna cost a hell of a lot more than first thought.
He rolled out from under & said "it's gone mate, no good! You don't actualy use it do ya?". Ok, give it to me, how much to put it right.
$8000 was the reply. I was gutted. Really, really gutted. I was in a whole world of hurt. The boat cost that much. I ralised I'd been ripped off.
Driving back home (with a tear in my eye), my phone rang. It was the guy I'd called & left a message. A quick chat with him & he told me to take it round.
Off to O'connor then. This guy looked & made the same noises, told me the same things & then said he could do it all, make it good as new for $5000 & it would be finished in 4 weeks.
So that's it, it's at the doctors. Costing alot more than expected but, hey what price safety. Apparently I'm lucky to still have a boat & even be here to moan about the cost.
So a word from me, who learnt the hard way. If you're gonna buy a second hand boat, get it checked by a prof before you part with your hard earned cash.

gee thats no good, alot of
gee thats no good, alot of money to use something you not long got, certainly a reminder that especially with an older boat that an inspection is a good idea, whats actually wrong with it, i mean for 5 grand you prob could get a pretty good 2nd hand hull somewhere or a boat out from the quokka that has a stuffed motor that you could swap everything over with

When we bought ours
It was ment to have been guttered and rebuilt pictures and all looked great but when we were in shark bay last year it ended up costing us near on $8000.00 by the time we got home. Yes a expencive lesson 1/ new 350 chev stern drive 2/ Hole in hull (been bogged up) 3/ windows came adrift 4/ Hull and deck seperated front end still come away with a freezer of fish tho.
Always when buying a boat get it checked out dont know who does this or how much they cost but i can tell you it would have been worth it . I mean to say told the guy at the yard where we bought it (23 footer) that we took our kids out and wanted a boat that was safe. worse tha car sales man
Went to a guy in Maddington he was great came out to our place gave a quote and stuck to it he fix the hole and refixed the hull to deck of boat told us how lucky we were .only cost around 800.00 all up .

Sorry to hear about that
Some of these salespeople sound like they are a bit of a worry.

Apparently the hull has
Apparently the hull has seperated from the frame, there are stress fractures all over. The whole thing has to be stripped back & rebuilt from the inside.
I considered the options of cheap hulls & swapping all my gear, but I like the boat. I've tinkered with it alot & I've pretty much got it the way I like it.
I'm really looking forward to getting it back & not treating it so gently. I've kinda nursed it since I've had it,knowing that it had been bodged before.
Russ, both the fibreglass places I have visited today will do hull inspections for a small fee.
I'm sure I'll catch a biggy oneday.

When you are buying a boat
When you are buying a boat it is not like you can ring the rac so did not know where to go . Maybe it is something that might need to be looked into and post a forum about who to contact when buying a boat .
Fisherking do you need to take your boat to the inspector or will they come out ???

Probaly depends how close
Probaly depends how close the boat is to them.
I certainly won't be buying another boat without a hull inspection. Would a boat insurance company point ya in the right direction?
I'm sure I'll catch a biggy oneday.

i only had my boat done in
i only had my boat done in the last six months, the floor had separated from the hull. Ive now got a new floor and the boat has been foam filled in all the cavitys.
I recommend u get them to fill the floor up with foam while your at it, my boat performs so much better and is solid as a rock now.

Ive been looking at plenty
Ive been looking at plenty of boats over the past 6 months any will sometime soon, buy a new one.
This is the problem i dred about getting a 2nd hand boat, and have finally decided not to go down that track.
2nd hand boats these days retain so much Value, which gives people the right to up the price of their 2nd hand boats, even if they have a problem with it.
So now i just need the dosh for the 6.25m Cruisecreft outsider ive been looking at :(

yeah well after todays
yeah well after todays decision by Jon ford I would wait for a while.
I would say prices are going to drop as there is not much point having a fishing boat over the summer any more.

It's not a brand, it says on
It's not a brand, it says on the paper work it is custom built. It's 17.5ft & handles realy well. It has been well thought out & well laid out.
I'm just annoyed that I let myself get ripped off. It's like Bodie says, the boats hold their price so well.
The guy I bought it off seemed so genuine. It was a private sale from the Sunday times. One of the batteries failed after a month, I called the guy & he was so appologetic he gave me the dollars for a new batt. He even rocked up at my house one day with a tin of marine paint that he found in his shed!
It makes me wonder if he knew it was as bad as it is. He had a young family & used to take them out in it.
I'm sure I'll catch a biggy oneday.
