Squid question
Submitted by Paul N on Mon, 2008-06-23 14:22
Time to start thinking of inshore options when the weather is bad , so I just might go squiding.
My question is how do you kill them ?
How to look after them for the table?
Never fished for them so I don't know what the best way to look after them is.
Thanks
Paul

Thanks Dawson
I guess they just die in the esky then ?
Is there no way to despatch them quickly.
I read somehwere that they go white when dead - is that true.
Any day fishing is a great day !!

I am new to squidding so
I am new to squidding so cant say if there is a correct way.
I have chucked them in th eski or ripped the head of and thrown the legs straight on the hook.
Found this on google.
storing and cleaning squid.
Squid are not normally gutted at sea: they are simply washed
and packed in ice. They are more susceptible to damage than gutted white fish if not handled carefully.
Ungutted squid in ice keep in first class condition for up to 8 days; after that time the flesh begins to redden, musty odours develop, and the squid become inedible in 13-14 days. Ungutted squid stowed in chilled sea
water keep in first class condition for 6 days, and become inedible after 9 days.
Whole squid keep in good condition in cold storage at -
30°C for 9 months or more.
The edible parts of squid are prepared in the following
manner. The whole squid is washed, and the tentacles are cut off just in front of the eyes; these are retained, since they can be eaten once the suckers have been removed. The head is twisted and the mantle is squeezed whilst the head, pen and guts arc gently pulled out. The mantle can be left whole, with the gut cavity washed out, or it can be split and opened so that any remaining guts can
be scraped or washed away.
The skin on the mantle can be peeled or scraped off; blanching in hot water at 25-30°C for about 15 seconds makes the skin easier to remove.

cleaning squid...
mmmm delicious...
Dad taught me a good way to avoid the inking side of squidding...though it means you have to cut them open, i.e. no 'rings'...
encircle the head with thumb and middle/pointer finger - basically choke them...nice and tight, and they cant ink you. they also die very quickly like this.
slice the mantle (tube) straight down the guts - just point your knife down it from head to end of the tube and slice down, so you dont cut into the guts/ink sac.
you can then see the ink sac in there, will be a shiny bluey kind of colour. grab it by the very top (where it is no longer shiny bluey, but more white/clear) where it attaches to the body. grab it tight with thumb and finger. you can now pull the sac out steadily and firmly (but gently so you dont rupture the sac!!) and chuck it. looks cool as it sinks through the water column!! you now have an ink-proof squid to do with what you wish. ice slurry is number one the way to go with any seafood.
this is a little more complicated than just chucking them in the bucket/esky - but you dont get inked. Well, as you figure out how to do it you might get inked!! but once you get the hand of it, it is quick and foolproof.
you dont get rings, but that doesn't matter, just seperate the head and guts and 'shell', peel the skin off and slice it up.
supposed to be heaps around at the moment - gonna get some myself...!
cheers,
Ewan

Try grabbing them behind the
Try grabbing them behind the head when you lift them out of the water, give a good squeeze and you brake there neck. Then when you put them in the esky they dont spray any more ink, works a treat.
