Wrasse

Hey fishing gurus,

I'm relatively new to the WA boat fishing scene and I was just wondering what the reason was behind the negative image of Wrasse caught off our reefs here in WA. Is it because they are a bad fish in their own right, or is it because they get in the way of that prized Pinky or Dhuey? It just got me wondering because I hear a lot of complaining about them.

Cheers,

Guesty

I eat them from time to time. I rate them on the table and as bait, dhuies dont say no to a big fillet of wrasse. I know what you mean hearing all bad things about them though, i think most people dont like them

They do look ugly...and scary to me. I caught 4 in Margaret River and they are fat. Didnt know what it is or whether it's protected or has size limit, i actually put them back.

Do they have any spike or any sharp/poisonous bit on them?

Correct with the hump headed maori wrasse but in all the years of fishing and I've never laid eyes on one and the only place I've heard of them over here is at the Rowley shoals.

There are quite a few around

There are quite a few around Exmouth. Had a fillet a few years ago before we found out they were protected, as far as I am concerned, they can stay protected, and they can stay where they are......tasted like crap.

im with everyone else on

im with everyone else on this one besides the eating part, get em everywhere and good for bait, i dunno about everyone else but i found if there are sambos around drop a fillet down and ur sure to get one, a mate recently hooked up on a sambo and when we got it boat side his daddy was following him up so chucked an unweighted wrasse fillet straight over and bang was on, proves it has to be good bait.

I rate them as bait for sure, and the one i ate tasted ok, but it was a bugger to clean!  don't know if they are all like that but was really slimey and hard to handle on the cutting board.

The main reason for most

Wed, 2010-09-29 17:45

The main reason for most people disliking wrasse is because they get in the way of catching much more favourable species. They can have your bait away in no time, not giving you the chance at a decent fish.
I generally find the deeper I go the less wrasse I come across.
