Your worst fishing trip

Just thought I'd start a bit of discussion, SPESS has given me an idea with his, what would you take to the island thread. How about a few stories about your worst fishing trip, the things gone wrong, the fish not biting, etc etc.

Anyone had any real shockers?

steep point shocker

april 2006...4 months in the planning and alot of money spent on gear and the like...5 mates all gee'd up to take on some of the states best fishing in such a remote place...there was a lot of talk and stories of catchin that big one....it was my first time to the place and i was pumped to experience some awesome fishing...we drove all night and arrived in the morning at overlander roadhouse...after stretching the legs and some eagerly awaited breakfast we made the start to the last section of driving to get to the point...it was long and some tough going on the way....not making it up one hill and having to empty 1/2 the trailer , get the fourbie up the hill and then carry the rest up by hand....wat fun , but at least it was an adventure...as they say sometimes things arent always that easy....we still had fun doing it though...we arrived at the rangers house and after some talk and payment we were on our way to the point....2/3rds of the way there we struck a flat tyre and it had to be changed...some of us started walking after it was sorted but then relalised it was a bit too far to walk to the point...we clambered back into the fourbie and one of us stood on the side of the car...then the worst happened ...we drove through part of the track and our mate was knocked off the side and slid under the back of the vehicle only to have 2.5tons of trailer go over the top of him...sickening feelings went through everyone as we stopped to help our mate...he was standing there in the middle of the track bleeding from some serious injuries in total shock...we scrambled to help him...in all the panic the trailer was unhitched and our mate was driven out of the place like they were in a rally car...there was an ambulance waiting at overlander to take him to carnarvon...we were taken by the ranger to the point and we set up a makeshift camp..all of us were in shock...all the hard work and organising gone to shit in seconds....we learnt a lesson that day and i did catch my first bluebone (on a handline) (yes the purple one)... we waited all night for news of our mate and at 3 in the morning the mate who drove him out got back and told us he would be okay....after a sleepless night we packed up in the morning (after a short session throwin poppers) we got to overlander and everyone knew who we were(the ones that ran their mate over) we stayed there for the night until we could pick up our mate...unfortunately we went home the next day and after all the money spent and planning i can say it was an adventure just not the one i was thinking of.........but i did get to the point....

mataranka unstoppables

Wed, 2007-06-27 00:05

when i rode round oz couple years back id stopped at mataranka springs, an hour south of katherine. Id heard the local boys talking of these big barra jumping in shallow water but couldnt find exactly where. Next day i went for a ride, taking side tracks and having a look seeing if i could figure out where these guys were talking about. Last track, got off me bike, late arvo, no shoes, no torch didnt know where the hell i was and i remember seeing these meter plus barra jumping in the shallows near a small waterfall up river. I got so excited i started running through the waist high bush with me spectrum 4-8kg and me calcutta 100 setup. Didnt know where i was going but about 40mins l8r i found a spot with still water which was pretty deep and heaps of snags round. I had 5 barra lures me m8 had given me in kalbarri b4 id left on me ride and he told me they were his fav lures and caught him heaps of barra. All i remember is casting to these snags and b4 i had time to adjust me drag i got dusted in less than 5seconds! I just flipped out so kept fishing and by the 5th lure i knew i had to at least see one of these trucks. My last lure and my last fish w me calcutta, lost the fish(didnt even see it!) i had it on for at least a minute b4 my 100 got jammed up and i got pinged! I opened me reel up and all the brake pins on the other side of the spool were bent 90deg flat! Just remember walking back to me bike virtually pitch black empty handed busted reel, no lures left and 5 barra i didnt even see, made me look like a fool! lucky noone saw it happen but geez did i swear my head off! going back there and i know ill get one! plus ill be prepared for it next time. Suppose doesnt help being my first time fishing for barra so it was a big learning curve and a costly one cos me 100 has been retired now as it will cost too much to fix the working parts that i l8r found out were shredded to bits! fish 5 me 0! whiting are so much easier to catch!!!
