Atauro Island - East Timor
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2009-12-09 13:30
The fishing destination for the East Timor fishing comp - Unfortunately the fishing wasn't as good as hoped, but the water looked insane and on its day, I reckon it would have some sick fishing. Report to come in the next reeltime magazine.

That looks like a great place to visit
Was it monsoon season while you were there. The clouds are looking ominous.

Potential with a capital "P"
Shame the fish gods weren't kind, but the weather ones look like they turned it on for you. Unless 40 degrees day and night is a bit hard to bear.

wet season
Just changing seasons as we got there Col. The first rain happened on the main land the Tuesday after the comp. The Island takes an extra week or two before they get their rain. Seems to be typical top end sort of stuff, except the mountains are pretty signficant size wise.
Definately Andy, would have thought there would have been more caught, still a few marlin and sails hooked and raised. The 40 degrees day and night were fine, it was the 90% humidity to go with it. Wasn't all that bad as a northerner, would have been interesting for the city folk though. ;) Luckily most of the crew were Darwinites.

Good to see
The last time I was in East Timor Dili was burning and the big cloud was from all the smoke. Good to see that things have definately settled down. It has potential to be an awesome tourist destination.
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

ship
That was taken from the cargo ferry on the way to the island. The camera went great Damo, took me a while to figure out why I was over exposing, but got the hang of it in the end. Got a few other crackers I will post up over the next few days.

Funny how the place has
Funny how the place has changed since i was there in 2002. Seems like a fair few little tourism ventures have been setup by ex-pats, diving, fishing, hiking in the mountains.
Would love to go back there someday and not be in the greens.
Look forward to reading your article Adam.

Adam when you come from
Adam when you come from Exmouth a lot of other fishing destinations might seem a bit ordinary. Looks like an interesting spot though.
