Long story..

Sat, 2010-07-10 00:08

Gus, the big dog came from a breeder in NSW, at the same time we picked him up from the airport, his sister arrived as well.  She went to Beverly and had some fun with a farm Kelpie there. Thus creates Nev, the amazing attack, stealth whatever you can think of dog!! Gus is a definate red, Nev, the crazy dog... Tan, Red, Brown... he's got a bit of everything!!! Good boy though!!

Red Cloud was in fact a male dog

I have a book on kelpies.....my family have had them for 100 years

I will dig the book out with the facts but from memory Red Cloud was a champion dog that went on to sire similar quality red dogs....the red cloud name stuck to the straight red dogs....often with a small white blase on the chest....its not a breed per say....just a strain selection.

The stories of breeding dingo into them and stuff is crap.....though did happen when camp dogs went looking for a good time....

dingos dont bark so no use as a sheep dog....

One very smart dog.....

The truth be known

There is no such thing as a "red cloud kelpie" The breed has come as a result of trying to find the ultimate "farm dog" that can withstand the harsh Australian conditions. Salmo, you are dead right in saying that a red cloud is just a name for the breed. Gus, the pure bred red kelpie, is one hyperactive, ADD suffering idiot!!, but Nev seems to be quite relaxed, Go figure??

We used to have a red cloud - extremely smart dog alright, also excelled at eating.  RIP my little 'biiig' buddy.

Pontoon at Gracie's? Used to

Pontoon at Gracie's? Used to go for a swim down there in the summer and this bloke had a 'red cloud' that would follow him out there. Used to crack me up, would have a rest on there whilst we all jumped off etc

Kelpies

Sun, 2010-07-11 08:58

I've certainly had some moments with them over the years. Apart from the usual destroying the backyard etc, I've had one chew through a hydraulic brake line on my boat trailer, and being an imported boat was a bit of a hassle to fix. Just the other week the youngest one chewed the button off my favourite Quiksilver camo shorts, but instead of just chewing the button off, he managed to chew a perfect hole of material with button attached.
Our first Kelpie got cancer when he was only 7, he was a great dog, so we opted to put him through kemo down at Murdoch, it doesn't affect dogs like humans, otherwise we would never had done it.  After $11,000, and about ten months it did not work, but that was the chance we took and we bought him some more time without really being in pain.
They are great dogs, and I wouldn't consider another breed.
