Fair to say he's pretty happy with it. Good stuff.

Do you guys still have the boats coming down from Asia to catch trout and keep them onboard alive in below deck cages for sale as live fish when the boats return to port?

Yeh dane and I were very

Mon, 2008-09-08 14:05

Yeh dane and I were very happy and wet, as it pissed down for about the first 4 hours we were fishing. Gotta love north qld!

We have a couple of local trout boats with the dory's ect, Don't really see too much of them but. Everything they catch is kept live In tanks and sent to Asia. Havn't heard of any Asian boats but, Don't think the locals would like that to much.

Cheers Scottie

Mistake

Sorry Andy, had it arse around, local boats keeping live fish for Asian markets.

Do they have to follow the same size limits as rec's and do they fish in the same areas as rec's?

live trout

Mon, 2008-09-08 18:20

Im not sure but I would assume they have the same size limit as recs, its 38cm over here. The pro's fish with small dory's in shallow water and target the smaller trout for live export, apparently the asian's like them 'plate size' and pay big bucks for them.

Not good

Mon, 2008-09-08 19:29

That's no good for future recruitment Andy, do the pro's (live fish traders) have a maximum size limit?

Nice fish, haven't managed

Tue, 2008-09-09 18:00

Nice fish, haven't managed to get out to the reef for ages due to one thing or another.

The pros have to follow the same legal size limits as the amatuers.

Generally they chase trout for the export market and keep them alive, so they fish around shallow bommies for the smaller ones (up to 2kg or so).   Harder to keep them alive if they're in deeper water.

cheers,

steve

Haven't been to the reef for

Wed, 2008-09-10 17:57

Haven't been to the reef for ages.  Went up to Lakefield on the Weekend to try for some Barra but it was pretty slow.  Only got 9 in a day and a half - only one legal size.  Still a bit cool unfortunately so we came home early.  I'd say the wind should start trending down in the next week or two.  Looking forward to getting my new second hand Cyclone 540 out there.

cheers,
