Sounder shot. enjoy!
Submitted by southcity104 on Thu, 2014-08-21 15:08
Took this photo last night on the sounder. Was following bait then larger fish and then this passed on the screen. Wether it's a shark, porpoise or a school of fish it sure looked like a Noah to me. Everyone on the bridge had never seen an image like it. Anyways enjoy.

Huh
Thats bizarre. But would have thought it a school of fish. Unlikely a sounder shot would look "exactly" like a shark. Bloody interesting shot and dying to hear others opinions.

My bro and myself were coming into woodies ramp , a few months back and had a big solid mass come up just like that on the sounder .. a few metres under just cruising along the ASI rockwall .. Bruce for sure I reckon , Good shot ...

bait
as much as i wanna say its a white it has got to be bait! if it was a white you would think the echo would be alot stronger specially considering the depth near woodies!

Yip
And ECHO relies on swimbladder causing a deflection. Thus you wouldnt see the outline so perfect. Not long ago there was a sounder shot off a known whale under a boat. The image was big, but you wouldnt be able to ID it for sure unless you know.

why do you need a swim
why do you need a swim bladder to get a picture?
I often see my bait or sinker going down on the sounder. no swim bladder there?

I thought it was purely
I thought it was purely based on density... hence your sinker shows up well being lead. And the harder / denser the bottom, the stronger the rebound of the signal.

Yeah, I'm with you pale ale.
Not sure on the whole swim bladder thing, considering sharks don't have swim bladders but definitely show up on the sounder. I'm sure I've seen them on the sounder when up north.

Should have explained better
Offcourse it sees other thing, but the Echo return is stronger with an air/fluid interface. And by the way I am easy corrected as certainly not an expert on Sounders.

Crasny is pretty well right I reckon.
Its a great shot, one for the poolroom but just coincidence.
A single sounder pic doesnt really tell a story any more than a single frame from a movie.
Imagine say sitting directly above exactly the same feature but not moving, it would just show a continuous red line, or if you moved over it quickly, just a small red blob.
Also sitting over a lump not moving isnt going to show a lump, just a flat bottom. Same lump moving slowly or fast will present a totally different pic as does slowing or speeding the screen picture speed

You might be sitting still
You might be sitting still but the "shark" has (possibly) swum through the beam.
Not exactly a single frame either - more like hundreds of frames except each frame is very thin (as in one pixel wide) and vertical. Only the frame on the right is the "Now" and everything else is history as it scrolls to the left.
The interesting thing is if it was a shark it could have been swimming through the beam in any direction (left to right, towards bow or stern) but the picture shows/proves it was swimming forward (yet to see a shark swim backwards :-))
Your dead right on speed being a factor in how the same object is presented on the screen.

The swim bladder theory is
The swim bladder theory is partly a myth - I say partly because swim bladders do reflect sonar - but so do all objects including fish without swim bladders, jellyfish, weed, particles in the water, thermoclines, sinkers and bait/lures and of course the bottom.
It's a combination of the size and density of the object that dictates the strength of the return.
The object shows a red centre showing a fairly strong return it could well be a GW or dolphin etc - it is not impossible it could be bait but the shape and stronger returns (red in this instance) is in the right place for a GW/dolphin I'd put my guess on a shark of some type as if it was a dolphin you'd expect a sighting of them surfacing in the area (which wasn't mentioned).
interesting pic regardless
Frame it and straight to the pool room that one!!

shark, dolphin or bait.
I didn't see any dolphins but I was in the cabin and it was at night. After staring at the sounder for years I just thought it was a unique image. Wether it be like staring at the clouds and someone says "hey there's a cloud that looks like a face" or something like that, it was worth capturing on the camera.
Maybe furuno WA should develop a great white ID function. : )

It does look like a shark
or flathead!! And I have never seen anything like it on my sounders over the years. Had one baitball that looked (the cloud theory) like a turtle. And A turtle surfaced not far away!! But the size off the sounder "turtle" would have made it 20ft long.

Dolphin Sounder Shot
I was cruising alongside about 10 dolphins and 4 whales last week, looked at the sounder and saw this. Looks like a dolphin diving to me. Wasn't keen to try for a whale shot though!!
