thats cool.
some say the image you get as a return from the fish is from the swim bladder , but that suggests otherwise
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

not true mate, even jelly
not true mate, even jelly fish show up on sounders,
The echo return is dependent on density reflecting the sound waves back and as Holk says, they can show the density gradient. You get a picture of the density in the water, where clear is water and anything denser or lighter will come up as an image.
with most fish the biggest density difference is between the flesh and fish bladder and thats why it stands out most. BUT some good sounders will show the whole body lenght if it's a big and dense muscle fish. or a dense spinal collumb as well will show up. This whale pic would show the huger back bone and fins as well as the huge jaw and tail strcuture.
I have seen images of divers on sounders before and even picked up my own bait sinking away and jigs on the sounder.

er.. i think you're in agreement with me then tony , unless i've misunderstood.
i was saying i didn't think you needed a swim bladder to get a return . and being able to watch a jig or weight heading to the bottom on your sounder ought to prove it.

Pretty amazing image. Was the boat moving over the whale or the whale moving under the boat?
Grayzee- the sounders pick up changes in density, and a swim bladder is a huge change in density, so is the easiest thing for a sounder to pick up. For the whale, i assume either the whale either has flesh a bit less penetrable to sonar than fish, or just the fact its so big, it still comes up on the sounder. Keep in mind most sounders still pick up weed for example. I think with fish you'd still get reflections from the fish, just that the swim bladder is a much stronger signal?
