Just thinking about the possibility of such nasties around makes me shudder, what if they got into the swan river or the Mandurah estuary and you plan on dabbing a few prawns soon. Can anyone confirm that it is in fact a stone fish.
This is not a Stonefish. It is a Southern velvetfish Aploactisoma milesii. Although it is distantly related to the scorpiofishes and stonefishes, it is in a different family. The spines on these are not venomous. This species is quite common in southern Australia and only gets as far north as Shark Bay. I'd say its a very unusual catch on a hook!
