A mate of mine has some in his boat but its 25mm thick. He uses it to soften the hard jarring underfoot you can get from a ali boat

Yes, I'm in the same boat (if you'll pardon the bad pun ) Matthew. My carpet is getting a bit raggy - especially round the edges.

The fatigue matt  i think is called ,got some right up the front of my boat for when driving.It does work but you have to wear some sort of foot wear as it starts to hurt after a while.I also have the whole floor covered with glued down carpet ,and when i get my next boat i will do it again with the same carpet.as you couldnt take your thongs off and fish.

Good thread Andy as I know a few people are looking for new carpet in their boats at the moment. If its the stuff that I've seen then I would definately steer clear of the blue vinyl interlocking sheets as once wet they become extremely slippery, to the extent that its dangerous IMO. I would look at other alternatives.

The only problem with any sort of rubber is it gets quite hot under foot , iv'e heard of a cork flooring ,i'll try to find some info. I use to go out on a boat some years back with that deck lock it was very uncomfortable ,even with shoes on. And bear foot was quite painfull , on those days when your feet seem to be realy tender AHHH..

Andy, as you saw on the trip up to the Abrolhos Islands we are putting on a product called deck tread, they use it on surf boards. We are importing it, and as a soft no slip surface, you can fish all day and the wetter it gets the more grip it applies, unlike carpet that when its wet your gear or yourself can aquaplane/slip. If any of the guys are interested they can see it at the factory.

whats the cost compared to carpet though? have you got a pic you can put up here for us guys to have a look at as well?

Each sheet is 480mm X 1100mm and can be joined at the ridges to give a seamless look. Each sheet is $39.70 and has 3M adheasive already applied for easy sticking to the surface. We use the dark grey and it looks real smart.

It is eva foam so dragging hard edges acros it will score it, but things like eskys, shoes, and general gear would be fine. We have spilt fuel , fish blood, dirt and mud on it and washes off easy. Like anything if you are mindful of it, it should last.

It is 5mm thick.

If it does get damaged, you can cut a section out and remove it, then put a new piece in.

This is a great thread - very interesting. To be honest, I'm having difficulty with the idea of glueing any material to the deck, more comfortable with the idea of being able to pull the carpets out (I have 3 - one in the cab, another from the bulkhead, around the FRB seat boxes and over the lid of the huge 'kill tank' and the last one covers the rear of the deck. This set up allows me to lift the kill tank lid to stowe the sea anchor (useless for anything else as we know).

As you know, a days fishing can really 'infiltrate' whatever you have over the non slip deck surface and being able to pull them out means I can wash and dry them completly by hanging them on a line.

I guess, I'm concerned just how clean you can get any material affixed to another surface.

Be interested in peoples thoughts on that.

Andrew - I do like the look of that stuff! Seams (no pun intended!) it wouldn't suffer the edge fraying that carpet does from the 'binding stiches' (not sure of the exact term).

Personally I prefer to have carpet on the deck from a washing out and fishing point of view, we are using the deck tread on marlin boards, rear steps, tops of gunwhale, walk around, where it is essential that a sound non slip area is required.

The other god thing about carpet on a deck is that when hoohs are pulled from a fish they don't slide or slip around making it safer, important when you have active fish like tune, mahi mahi onboard, don't need hooks moving about.

In regards to sticking the deck tread down, it needs a smooth clean surface, which may present a problen in some boats due to floor materials. The ultimate combination, would be to have the deck tread on the deck and thin marine carpet over top as it would serve all purposes from cleaning, non slip and soft.

Colin, working on that but have no time frame at present, but what I'm hoping for is that I can get a section/roll that a deck could be cut from as one piece.

Thanks Andrew, that IS great news. But, as I mentioned, for access to the 'kill' tank, I'd need it in two pieces. Would the edges fray and/or lift? Naturally, I'd use the existing deck studs.

You can cut it so it is on hatches, lids and other access areas.

No fray or lifting as yet, but time will tell. The adheasive is really good so lifting will be a matter of wear and tear.

mmmm thats 350 V8 looks damn hot, wow imagine that at full throttle, that stuff looks good, will be worth the wait for the full deck size stuff for sure
