Fishing the Northwest
Submitted by razor551 on Tue, 2008-07-08 12:25
I'm from Melbourne and have never fished the Northwest, I'm thinking of doing a trip in 2009 around May or June I will have to charter, need some ideas on the best places this time of year. Any tips will help. Ray

We'll probably fish from
We'll probably fish from Exmouth or Karratha, any thoughts on Karratha.

Karratha is a company town
Karratha is a company town not a tourist town. There is very little and extremely expensive accomadation in town. Point Samson is a little way further North, is more tourist orientated and has a charter operator.
Onslow is between Exmouth and Karratha and is a good spot but has limited oportunities is you dont have a boat.
Exmouth, Coral bay, Mackeral Islands/Montes are your best bet as they fully cater for the travelling fisherman in those localities.
All those charters still rely on a full boat to head out. If there is only the one or two of you it may still be difficult to get on a charter on any specific day.

As NOHA said
Point Samson has a charter. It is a very good one, but you may need to book early. It is also a good spot to base yourself as there are also quite a few good shorebased options close at hand.

Yeah I'd go with Point
Yeah I'd go with Point Samson, way less busy than Karratha, more shore based options, good charter boat & better accomodation.

Hi Razor
I amn going up to Pt Hedland on a weekly basis for work. I hope to do a few weeekends up there where I can fish. If you dont mind can you please PM me the details of the charters, etc. Some feedback on charters you go on would be great too if it isn;t too big an ask.

fishing the northwest
Thanks Ryan
I appreciate your response and I'm now confused about where to fish, you have so many different places to go it's mind boggling, from Melbourne we fish Snapper or Whiting In Port Phillip Bay and Westernport Bay, also for the last 30 or so years I've been fishing Bermagui. Awesome when the Yellowfin or Marlin are on, but the seasons haven't been like they were 15 or 20 years ago. So looking to broaden our horizons, this year we fished Darwin for a few days not brilliant but different. Next year the Northwest looks great.
P.S this is for all you guys that responded to my enquiry, thanks for the info.

thoughts!
Me personally i rate Exmouth as one of the best Fisheries in the world and you can catch everything there (in general)
Comes down to what you want to catch, feel free to PM me the species you want to catch and your general "wants" from a Norwest trip and i'll give you my thoughts.....happy to help!
