Done that Luke and Yes they seem to be a good rod but there is a heap of choice out there too. 1 rod doesnt always suit all anglers and styles.

Wasnt an anti Oceanside post tho as I nearly bought the jig master.

James in regard to the bluewater rods some people rate them quite high I have a 5'6 model have used it a few times to be quite honest didn't like it as for serious jigging I use either a vann staal overhead or spinning rod after that for general purpose bottom bounce/light jigging the t curve 400 have found it good so far like the fact that it is two pice for travelling and has the flat foregrip a personnel favourite of mine if your after a bluewater pop in and see wil at complete angler he will do you a good deal But other people prefer different brands of rods so its horses for courses

I still believe the Jigwrex

Tue, 2007-03-20 22:59

I still believe the Jigwrex are a great rod for their 'price'.... unfortunately in aus it seems it has been priced as a 'premium' jigging rod, where as in some places it is priced as a 'moderate' jigging rod, where it stands well above its class in the heavy range.

still, it is good; extremely comfortable, only lacking in its lifting power perhaps, against the big ol sambo. would be happy to use one all day.... but possibly not all week. then again rods I would prefer to use all week are.... in the 'super-premium' class. (reason for that... no not comfy, they got nice butt wraps =P =P =P).

Jay bluewater stocks them. I think oceanside will do so too. They both stock the built ones, looks very flash. Last I saw prices are around the 700$ mark. i may be wrong.

i have the 400g model, 5 ft 8 and custom built for general specs based on the design of the Zenaq Fokeeto (honsu has one). JM make quite alot of nice blanks. But as for the built rods (they are so short!) and the price tag.... you will have to arrive at your own conclusion. I went down the same path 6 months ago...

just my opinion. im happy with my 400g, so i'm not saying good, nor saying bad. they will land u a few fish for sure.

Try the rapala braid concepts! I absolutly love mine and retail for around the $260 mark i think. Well worth the buy and i too went down to oceanside and tryed all the rods and betwwen me and honsu i beleived this was the best one for me. However i will be purchasing the jigmaster from oceanside for a spinning jigging combo for next season for something alittle different. Im a overhead man through and through but something about those jigmasters make any angler want to buy one. Dont let the looks put you off, its not hard to customize it allitle youself if you want mr flashy.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

I'm not the tallest person around kasey and I seem to like shorter rods (personal preferance). What's the 400g model? 80lb?

Do you regret buying yours (you said you went down that path)? If you had another choice what would you have got instead, for around the same price or cheaper (if there are better rods at a cheaper price)?

you've met me jay and i aint

Wed, 2007-03-21 18:12

you've met me jay and i aint too tall either. The reason I'm a bit squirmish about the short rods is that they are all built on ther same blanks.... and all them blanks are produced at 6 ft, i think. but anyway, still a good working curve.

its good that they rate their rods to jig-weight, and not poundage. makes sense doesn't it, with jigging. anyway the max drag is something stupid, like 24 kg or something. i have dead-lifted 25kg with the 500g model (rated to 30kg), its stupid pressures... i think if i maxed it at 30kg i would have popped something, or something would have popped out... had the chance tho, quite amusing. but yeah im guessing pe6-8.

i dont regret it, like it very much, very light and has pulled its fair share of good solid fish. around the same price of what i got it for? probably not much else. i got mine cheap, from a friend. but at $700 i'd think a few times. Although I can say that the JM rep is a good fishn buddy of mine, I'll just statewhats on the label: its not cheap.

the JM 400g is quite famous, a good balance of strength and comfort. at the price i got it for, not many quality rods could match.... p.s mine is an overhead. just have a play around... =) happy huntin

another brand that you guys might wanna check out is Genesis Oceancraft range of rods/ blanks, they have PE 2-4 Dogtooth Special, 4-7 Amberjack special and 5-8 Long Range Special, which IMHO is pretty close to what JM blanks offer their 2-4 almost = to 250-300g, 4-7 almost = 350-400g and 5-8 almost = 400-500g but at a cheaper cost, dunno if they'll be available in Australia thou..

Yup, the Genesis LRS is pretty fantastic for the price. Quite a nice working curve and comfy.

Unfortunately it'll be a huge surprise if I walk in and see a Genesis rod here.

Also, if you are thinking custom built, G-tech and Extreme Graphite do very similar blanks to JM... for 1/2 to 1/4 of the price, depending which price you are referring to. Again... wouldn't really expect to see it. Come on mr. honsu prove me wrong =D

Thu, 2007-03-22 12:07

No we dont stock any of the blanks you mentioned KC and have never seen them, only read a little bit about them...

Our JIG MASTER is different to the JIGGING MASTER rods. One is from Taiwan and ours is built locally here. We do stock Jigging Master gears, just none of the rods in the shop atm as the Sambo season have finished 2 mths ago... Next season we'll try to carry them.....but we still have plenty of others to choose from, JigWrex, Van Staal, Pflueger, Daiwa, Rapala and our semi-custom "JIG MASTER"

Jay...what model Jigging Master you have in mind??

hope i'm not offending

Thu, 2007-03-22 14:13

hope i'm not offending anyone with my posts... just tickling ;) u know me... hehe

mark just suggested some nice rods, and i'm just pointing out that there are a few more out there, but not everything is available (yet hopefully) and things available here might not be available there (for example, the plentiful fish =P)

at the end of the day, whatever gets the job done is best. all the gear in the world won't help if you can't catch fish period (again please no reading between the lines, i'm not accusing anyone of not being able to catch fish... there are many far better anglers on this site than me)..... and theres no point getting all 'bling' if the value isn't used. function preceeds marketing hype. there is alot of good gear going round without having to resort to trying to source it from somewhere 3 or 4 time zones away and in a different hemisphere.. although some might like the exotic look. we're all in this forum (well the idea is anyway) to help each other out, and i'm not here to bag shit. (although if i find something being shit, i might just say its shit... wait thats confusing) for example i don't believe in comparing similar products... its very personal (but expensive to pay for that experience) preferrence. and marketing. anyway i certainly don't believe in judging an angler by his gear... judge an angler by his technique and the goods he produces =P

again, no offence ey lads, no cryptic messages here... i can see how what i say might be read as um... toooo 'flaming' but please understand i just have an... unconventional sense of humor. maybe it can be described as too cheeky. i am here to help tho, aren't I? =P i answered jay's questions.... hehe.

ok ok i'll just keep my mouth shut. i'll make better contributions, promise. no offensive or subliminal meanings to anyone. happy fishin!

Low cost jig rods

Sat, 2007-03-24 01:57

Many of the threads keep bringing up the price tag somesuch rod has.

Just a question but why dont some of you guys get together and make your own custom jig rods?
Its not rocket science, and advice is easily available on-line.

This is exactly what I did nearly 30years ago when I wanted a super dooper trolling rod (I've made about 40 over the years and never had one fail)

Jig rod blanks are below the 6ft transport barrier, so shipping isn't expensive and most manufacturers will sell 10-12 blanks as a 'dealer' shipment.

Now the cost - well - if you take the shop price, a blank will cost you 25-35% max. Add on everything else and you'll save 40-50%min.

All the bits like handles and rings are available online, and you can mod your rod to exactly what you want.
Items like winding jigs can be easily made and its a brill way to spend your free time AND save a bundle of $$$$$$$$$$ - which is where we came in.

I'm happy to assist if anyones interested?

Nothing beats the sense of satisfaction when you catch something on a lure or rig you made yourself. Doing it with a rod you built will only add to that feeling. Great idea Mick.

Time is the only barrier for most I suppose. I wouldn't mind giving it a go if others are going to play along. Would make a great how to collumn with digital pics. Maybe you could do one Mick and post some pics as you go to give us some pointers along the way.

Cheers

Seed Mande up factory rods

Thu, 2007-03-29 16:09

I hear Mandurah Tackle has some made up Seed Japanese factory rods.
Worth a look at.

Build yourself rods.

Fri, 2007-03-30 21:11

Hi Andy & Jay
The real beauty of building your own rod is you get EXACTLY what you want, specification and length of handle, reel seat position and gimbal type, size and colour of threads, quality and position of guides, glues and finish, (plus extras like mermaid transfers)

All my trolling rods I made with AFTCO detachable stand-up butts, so I can remove the butt and the reel in one unit, for security and cleaning.
My bottom rods have the reel the same distance up from the gimbal, irrespective of the type of reel I plan to use.
My longer spinning rods have a longer lower grip but again all are equal, the same as my two Hardy salmon spinners actually.

From what I see on the videos a bottom bouncing rod seems to be your standard weapon, followed by a jig/light trolling rod.
This is a good rod to start with, and an old 'friend' that needs a re-ring is a nice easy introduction.(I'm happy to take this further but perhaps a new thread is required - I'll leave that decision to the moderators tho').

Time isn't an issue because its not a one hit process.
From start to first wetting is usually 2 weeks, and fully curing the top coat takes 7 days, so its only a week to make-up from scratch.

How long?
I can under whip(bind) a trolling rod in about 2hours (thats the thread that only goes onto the blank, and doesn't do anything but provide a sound, non-slip base for the guides, but adds to the colour scheme - but is only required on heavy load rods).
To whip on the 5 roller guides takes about 2-3 hours times 2, because these require 2 complete 'bindings'.

To do all this easily a winding jig is essential.
A flat, seasoned, smooth wood plank makes the base, I used a salvaged hardwood window sill.
The rollers (for the blank to turn on) are supported by two thin metal book ends, cut centrally to allow free passage of the rod blank, and screwed to the plank facing inwards. Use big flat head self tappers and you can then alter the support positions to suit differing rod/blank lengths.
These each require a pair of plastic rollers (for the blank to turn on) available from most hardware stores or from a scrap kiddies toys.
The drying motor comes from a scrap microwave oven, its the mini motor that turn the table, blanks are secured with rubber bands and a blob of blue-tak.

For speed winding use a portable hand drill, a good lady with sensitive hands, the only controls required is a kind voice!

A ceramic bobbin holder IS essential and available from Hopkins and Holloway in the UK, at about £12 (jiggers will find these double-up for a leader/spectra knotter) They sell other bits & bobs for rod building and are a first class 'old world' company.

I rekon thats enough to get everyones grey matter working, I'll stop and await any responses.

Sat, 2007-03-31 09:36

Hi Jay,

If you want I can get them, they're not the cheapest rods but still nice. My original look at the range didn't fuss me at the retail prices quoted "but" I'll be re evaluating next jigging season however!

Van Staal overhead rods are very parobolic and line cut in the Eva is an issue, next batch next season sometime should have this sorted to my knowledge!

Oceanside "Jig Master" custom rod are awesome, mass produce rods like Jig Wrex is good also.

very sad sad day for me....

Sat, 2007-03-31 18:00

very sad sad day for me.... disaster struck, in the most unkind way to my jig master last night...

here is a copy of what happened....

yeh, was pretty slow night.... man that current was bad!!! at one stage we were fishing in 65-70 m... and hooked up big time...both dennis and myself..and it felt weird..just weight...after around half a hour we ended up seeing craypot floats about 30m away..so we thought we had found a drowned pot line. lost our rigs on that one...so a quick move about 5mins away...it happened again....more rigs lost... another 5 min move...yep again...turns out the current was that strong, this pro had dropped all his pots in that depth, and the current was pulling all 3 - 4 floats right down deep :0 ...it really tricked us, as when we went out, we looked for pots so we wouldnt have hassles with them later... but man, we found them several times...the worst of it was when we wound our lines in...under very very heavy drags..plus thumbs...we would see a float come up about 20 m away... but we could never get close enough to reach them to remove our gear ( which we could see below us around 10 m)as they would sink straight away.... damn pots... i had my rod ( oceanside jig master 50-80lb stick, with a torsa 20 ) loaded up , when a swell rocked the boat big time... listing the boat big time... result, a gun shot crack, and one busted rod :( how do you stop that from happeneing... i mean one minute you are horizontal to the water, the next the rod is way up there, and snap...no warning... nothing... just a stuffed rod??? i was quite surprised how easy and quickly it happened, as were the other guys who saw it.... needless to say, it was a very very costly night for me....

so yeh, bit dissapointed...

fish for fun, the future, and the belly!!!

bad luck luke

yeh, just one of those day's/nights. cant complain as i have had a good run on bb fish... as for the rod, yeh, annoying, but what do you do... just surprised how quick it happened... no creaking or groaning... just a hell loud snap. lesson learnt...next time anything like that happens, no max drag!!! the torsa packs a punch!!!! shame cause i really liked the rod too... was hell strong, and performed very well...till then...

Sat, 2007-03-31 21:46

Dont you guys use a grapnel to lift net/pot lines up for unhooking?

I use one regularly cus here the 'commercials' just use lemonade bottles for floats and they're always sinking.

Sorry about your busted rod Luke, atleast you now have all the bits for a rebuild, all you require is the blank.
Something for those long winter nights.

Sun, 2007-04-01 08:00

yeh, i hear that mick, but they were too deep where we hooked up, and by the time we got close to the pot floats again, they were already 15ft deep... the current was PUMPING!!!! at times even a 30 oz sinker wasnt heavy enough to hold bottom easily.... good point about the fittings mate, may give a rod build some thought.....

I have fished both O/H and spinning rods and have not had an issue with anything yet , FANTASTIC rods .

Only thing I would recommend is if your going to fish PE8 then get a PE 8 rod , not something smaller / lighter and expect it to perform over it's capabilities.

We have got PE5 braid breaking at 72 Lb's so it should be on a 80 lb rod NOT a 50 lb rod .
