Split grip Sic Stik

I got bored yesterday arvo and decided to do a little project.

I snapped a Sic Stik Pro a couple of years ago and it has been lying around ever since, so i decided to give it a bit of a facelift (even though its useless anyway). So after some measuring, cutting, scraping and sanding of the cork, i came up with this.

Not to bad for an afternoons work hey.

Who's going fishing this weekend?

Who's heading out this weekend? Whats the plans?

Bit of diving and a marlin bash up here, maybe a crab if the wind comes up... mmmmmmmm, the possibilities!

an apology

well i said id eat my words if i was wrong about perth gts and thats what im doing . upon being some what inspired by the gold spot of rotto i did further research into how this can happen. i found that around 25 years ago there was infact a gt caught of the southern end of garden island that went an astonishing 52 kg! and there has been many caught since . on the rare ocasion that we get a real warm water flush that hits perth the trevally follow the boats from places such as onslow back to perth. other records also show that not to long ago 2 gts came out of the salmon holes down south ? go figure! also the biggest marlin recorded on the west coast went 1000 kg and washed up on a beach in esperence.
so nothing is impossible and i do apologise for me jumping to conclusions

Purchasing a Baitcaster!

Hey guys,

I'm planning to buy a new baitcaster to tee up with my Shimano Starlo Stix Tournament Pro 6-8kg (old baitcaster karked it). The old reel got me covered with how to cast and all the little knick nacks that comes with using a baitcaster.

Willing to spend $100 - 300. (Apprentice wage, stin-gy bastard).

Any recommendations and reports about reels are very welcome. All will be taken on board.

Laughing

Cheers lads,

Darda

Small boat questions

I haven't had a boat for many, many years and you guys know more about these things than I ever did.
A guy at work is going to sell a 12 foot fibreglass dinghy with a 20 hp motor for about $1000. It has front steering, a couple of front seats and a bench at the back and rod holders.
I have been thinking of buying a small boat (that is all I can afford at the moment) for putting around in the river and maybe heading to a reef just off Hillarys on flat days.
Do you think it sounds like good value?
Do you think this sort of boat would suit?
Would I be better off getting an aluminium dinghy?
How big a trailer do you think I would need?
Do you have any idea what a trailer like that would cost?

Sorry to ask so many questions. But I know very little about this area.
Many thanks Colin Hay

braving the elements again tonight

Cottesloe Groyne rethink

After guaranteeing Jas04 that he would catch something decent if he popped down to Cottelsoe Groyne early in the morning, I thought I had better do some research and make sure my information was up-to-date.
So I decided to pop down there early this morning for two hours before going to work. It seemed like it should be ideal. High tide just after dawn, water stirred uo from the blow earlier this week. The only possible problem was a lack of wind.
Anyway, I arrived at about 5.45 am to find just one other angler - an old Cott Groyne regular judging by his set-up, which included a trolley for carrying his gear.
It was a beautiful morning, no wind (unfortunately) and a gentle swell.
I tossed out a paternoster rig with a mulie while I waited for the sun to rise, but not a touch.
Just after dawn, Matt (hlokk) arrived and he headed off to try his luck casting lures across the edge of the reef.
I persisted with my paternoster rig on my big rod and tossed out a twisty for awhile on my lighter gear.
Still no joy.
Finally I got a hit (you guessed it - a skippy - but it was pretty small and I still don’t knowhow it got its mouth around my 4/0 gangs).
After only receiving one follow from a herring on my twisty I decided to try my unweighted mulie rig.
That attracted a few more bites, unfotunately not from tailor.
I ended up with a herring and two skippy - the second one a reasomable size.
Matt ended up with a couple of herring.
While the fishing wasn’t overly exciting - it was an interesting morning.
Spoke to quite a few local fisherman, all of whom commented that the tailor had disappeared from the groyne for the past month.
I had a bit of a chat to one old regular and spoke to him about the gannets diving into the water a couple of hundred metres offshore. He said they have been a fairly regular sight lately and were diving on schools of scaly mackeral. He also said that occassionally big tuna could be seen chopping up the schools.
While you wouldn’t reach them with a cast, a balloon might make it if you had a decent easterly blowing.
Another interesting sight was a family of Ospreys which has made the area their home. A local said the young ones have developed a skill for begging herring off the fishermen on the groyne. And there were plenty of herring.
So Jas04, what should I tell you.
If you want to catch some skippy and herring, then the groyne would be okay. There were heaps of herring and there seemed to a few skippy around.
If you want to try for something bigger you might have to try there at night - or try the mole, or City Beach Groyne.
All the best, Colin Hay

LIP GRIPS - Weight For It - Interesting Article

Just received my Recfishwest 'Casting Around The Internet' email this morning. They're always interesting articles, not only from within WA, but outside (National/International) as well. These 'external' articles are important because they can have a 'flow-on' effect to us WA fisher folk.

One caught my eye, on 'Fish Lip Grips' it reads:

Effect of “fish lip grips” on bones and tendons to be researched
A $17,000 study into the effects of lifting fish from water using fish mouth grips will use high tech scanning equipment and new examination techniques. Research is aimed at determining what effect the grips have on the fish’s bones and tendons when fish are lifted with these types of grips. Best practice is to always support the weight of large fish, avoid grips with inbuilt scales and avoid holding a fish up by the grip

Here's the link to the orginal NT site:

http://www.nt.gov.au/dpifm/Fisheries/news_media_archive_article.cfm?newsid=379&ws=1

Given the emphasis on fish care and release changes, I haven't yet seen anyone come up with a 'cradle' where the fish is supported in a wet surface cradle with supports attached and weight grips or other scales terminating in a 'hook' can be used, but the fish is supported. I appreciate that different species are seen to be more/less prone to damage from 'lip support' and that it's not an issue if you intend to keep the fish. But with more fish being released, due to fishing style, undesirability, bag and size limits etc, maybe we need to look at a cradle system. If they don't exist, it would be a simple matter to make one up I'm sure.

Thoughts/input people?

Contract awarded for Woodman Point upgrade

Work will begin later this month to significantly improve boat-launching facilities at Woodman Point.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today that the State Government had awarded a contract for the $3million project to J J McDonald and Sons of Belmont.
“This will double the number of boat-launching ramps and provide a disabled access pontoon,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Follow-up works will provide a sealed parking area for 350 cars and trailers to cater for the growing number of boat owners using Cockburn Sound.
“The expansion and improvements will allow Woodman Point to meet its potential as a major recreational boating facility and ease congestion and delays for users.
“All the required approvals are in place, so the contractor can immediately start work on the project to ensure completion in early September - ready for a busy boating season.”

The Minister said the work would include the construction of:

· a four-lane boat ramp with two holding jetties;

· a floating universal access jetty;

· access roads and footpaths;

· rock revetments;

· drainage; and

· minor works including fencing, barriers and signage.

The project is the first stage of a major upgrade of the Woodman Point Recreational Boating Precinct.
Ms MacTiernan said expressions of interest were currently being considered for the operation of a boat-stacking facility with a capacity for more than 300 vessels on site.
As well as improving the parking, future upgrades would include the development of sites for light marine industry.
"Together, the improved launching facilities and boat stacker will play an important role in meeting the growing needs of boat owners in the metropolitan area," the Minister said.
More information about the project is available from: http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/woodmanpoint

long distance swim

well The dive last night wasn't cold but i was left with a huge swim as i surfaced on the wrong side of the river. I had two choices leg it up the hill and find someone with a phone and call the boys to drive around and get me or run the gauntlet back over to the other side on the surface with all my gear. Well i opted for the swim and what a swim it was the tide was running pretty fast on the other side. I was thinking bull shark bait with flashing lure lights all over me. I managed to get to the first moring line and hang of a moring to catch my breath before the last dash to the beach. I need to get a new compass. But did manage a feed of prawns

hillarys tomorrow

I'm thinking of heading to the marina tomorrow morning early and putting in a couple of hours.

I'll be taking my ultralight rod to catch some bait and my heavier rod to set out for something bigger...fingers crossed!

I'm thinking of trying the south wall, as I've never fished it and have not caught much lately on the north wall.

Any spots or tips for the south wall that anyone is willing to share?  What's the latest on what's catching there?  You can pm me if you want.

Cheers!

Boat fishing for dhuies

Hi All

When boat fishing for dhuies do you stand more of a chance anchoring and burleying or doing drifts?
Have had good days on a couple of spots with really good ground and caught allsorts of fish like black ass and harli's
as well as pinkys and sarget bakers. But have been suprised that no dhuies of any size have come up.
We were anchored both times.

Thanks

Pipis and sand worms

I am intrigued by Andy Mac's comment on diving for pipi's off Albany on Dreamweaver's post.
I was wondering if these are the same pipis that you get over east?
Do you get them at the beaches down south?
I am also wondering if there are any sandworms in the West?
Many thanks, Colin Hay

June kids comp

Ok I'm trying again Hi everyone, Took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and took the kids to Moore River with the Tinnie for some Bream. Was going to get some skippy out at three mile(thenks for the tip Uncle) but the winds changed our mind. My 7 year old daughter fished hard all morning insisting on baiting and casting herself. She lost a heap of my gear but had a ball even trying soft plastics and hardbodies. We caught and released over a dozen Bream with my daughter assuring us the big one was coming. After lunch we tried some snags and my daughter was screaming she had the big one. By the look of the rod I thought another rig sacraficed to the sunken logs of the Moore only to see her line rip through the water. The end result was a cracker of a Bream! i asked her if she wanted to release it and in the mouth of babes her response was " The reason I let the others go dad is so they can grow big like this one that I'm going to eat for dinner tonight with chips and salad. What are you having?" How could I say no? Cheers Rosco

Halco First Aid

Worth adding to your first aid kit - Emla Cream.

Available from the chemist.

If you are fishing remote (boat or bush), use of emla cream could help with the extraction of a hook from your body.  Yes, bourbon will help too, but the cream will help numb the skin layers.  It does take 30 minutes to work, so sit back and relax(probably a few more drinks) then remove the offending object.  Obviously, dress the wound properly afterwards and see a Dr for an update of tetanus shot.

Now if this bloke had some on his boat, it might have saved me driving him to Joondalup Health Campus (who by the way, did a great job removing the offending object) and we would have had more time to troll for spaniards!

Deep diving Halco introduced to anglers fore arm at high velocity;

Close up;

The how and why this happened, I will leave for the owner of the arm and lureEmbarassed

Another tip; maybe pack a razor in the kit too.  As if you have gorilla arms, pulling electrical tape off does hurtKiss

Cheers Pete

Fremantle boat pen auction

Did anyone put in a bid

Sat 07 June, 2008

New Fremantle pens allocated at public ballot

Today's public ballot to allocate 65 new boat pens at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour has attracted keen interest.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said 102 registrations had been received for the ballot conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission.
Those successful in the ballot will be offered a five year licence in advance, to help fund the construction of the pens, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“The new pens are highly sought after because of their convenient location with easy access to Rottnest and the river,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“They will help ease the current shortage of berths for larger recreational vessels, registrations of which have increased by more than 50 per cent over the past decade from 3,270 in 1998 to 5,050 in 2007.
“The pens range in size from 15 to 22m and cater for vessels of 12m length or greater. Two 35m pens will be set aside for casual berthing for larger visiting vessels.”
The new pens are part of a redevelopment of the southern end of Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.
The Government recently called for tenders to undertake the first stage of work including the construction of the new pens, which will involve the extension of a current jetty and maximise the use of undeveloped seabed.
Future stages of work, subject to funding, could see the replacement of the existing 40-year-old timber jetties which are at the end of their serviceable life and the incorporation of an alternative pen layout to provide a total additional 100 pens. \
More information about the pens is available from http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/fremantlepens or the harbour officer on 9431 1020.

Sol problems

My sol is starting to play up a little, the anti reverse seems to be failing every now and then, it would spin back a bit and the the gears would catch and the anti reverse would engage. This shouldn't be happening and was hoping it would be covered by the warranty, 1.5 years old.

Any else had this problem??? What should i do, take it back to the shop to send it off to Daiwa??

Cheers guys.
