Dud of a storm
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-05-22 13:38After checking out the weather information for the past week and watching the predictions for a big blow to hit Perth today - I was preparing to head down to North Mole this afternoon in the hope that there might be some snapper action. Looks like it has turned out to be a bit of dud, so I think I will try some of new soft plastics down at Hillarys.
Anyone planning to hit the Mole today?
All the best, Colin Hay

cockburn sound
Submitted by luke george on Mon, 2008-05-19 20:23was watching fishing wa the other day on foxtel and they went to a spot that they said was just outside cockburn sound. It was 3 rocky outcrops about 3-4m high and 10-20m wide with some small breaks. 1 large tailor was landed and i think a salmon. Just was wondering were this is as i have fished cockburn sound for around 10 years and i havnt seen anything like this? is it behind carnac island? or maybe past woodys point?

Sea martin reels
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2008-05-19 14:51Maverick's mention of Sea Martin reels has raised my interest in acquiring one of these fine reels. Does anyone have any idea where I might find one - and what sort of money they are worth?
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Strange reel
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2008-05-19 14:50I noticed a very strange description on a reel at a certain leading department store the other day. The reel was described as a Trolling Reel and was said to be ideal for catching snapper, morwong and a range of other bottom fish. No mention of surface fish that I could see. Thought it was a bit strange - but maybe I am wrong. (The reel is made by a pretty reputable company that has recently been acquired by a pretty well known US company that is big in the SP area)

sunday 18/5
Submitted by luke george on Mon, 2008-05-19 10:14great day out yesterday headed out to covs for a bit of bait but could only bag 2 herring so went out to 20m of water to get a few wrasse for bait. First drop ended up being a big gurnet and a just legal breaksea which was great for lunch on the barby out there. Then dad hooked up to something decent and after about 15mins an 11.5kg whiskery came up took a bit of work with a blunt gaf but we got him. Then headed out to 28m of water for some whiting. Got 28 big thick sand whiting then hooked up to something alot bigger using only a tiny cube of squid and size 4 long shanks on 30lb braid with a 25lb mono leader got a 8kg hammerhead to the surface. Not wanting to stuff around with the gaf again dad grabbed its tail i grabbed its dorsal and just ripped it into the boat. Then a few more whiting and little flatties (dad got spiked by a tiny flattie was fun watching him complain hehe). Went back into coventrys for a bit had a double of herring on and a sambo of around 20kg followed it back to the boat but couldnt get a hit. All in all was a great day was back to the ramp at 2 and almost all day was absolute glass

Clarification - Boat Limits?
Submitted by JoRn on Sun, 2008-05-18 21:02hey guys,
As the forums suggest today was an awesome day outwide today, however something weird happy today, we actually caught quite a bit including a 6kg pinkie on light gear, was awesome (was trying to breakin my new toy Morethan brazino)
anyway, just before lunch opening up our kill tank we realised we had caught quite a bit inlcuding snapper, dhuies, baldchin, black ass and skippy, it got us thinking if we were over the limit.
If we went by numbers of each fish per person we were way under, but we were quite unsure if there is an actual boat limit.
I had a quick search on the fisheries website but didnt find anything except for the amount of fillets or something??
we actually left around lunch time with the fish still biting just incase we were over the limit haha.
can someone clarify?

A beautiful day
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sun, 2008-05-18 13:16What a beautiful day. If you were in Perth and you have a boat, I guess you went out to sea today. Well that is what is seemed like this morning.
I pottered off down to Hillarys to have an early morning fish at the lighthouse.
Arrived about half an hour before dawn and set myself up. It was all quiet and then the armada started coming out of the harbour. I fish that spot most Sunday mornings and I have never seen as many boats come out of there as I did today.
There will little dinghys with old fishos going solo, new dinghys with four or five young blokes (all wearing beanies), an old clinker manned by a pair of cap wearing old anglers, flash big cruisers, dozens of fishing boats, yachts, kayakers, boats full of scuba divers, guys on jet skis with their babes hanging onto their shoulders and and a pair of fishing rods in holders, surf club boats, rescue boats, charter boats - you name it - it went out of the harbour today.
And no wonder. What a beautiful morning. It must have been fantastic out on the ocean.
Hope all of those who did venture out had a fishing day to match the conditions.
Myself, I had a handy morning. Kept four nice skippy, saw some dolphins, a massive stingray and a sizeable school of mullet.
What a beautiful day.
