G’day,                Just joined up yesterday, love the website heaps of great information…  You just can’t find a good forum like this over in NSW..  Well the reason for the note, I'm heading over to your awesome state for a month on my honeymoon in 2 weeks.  Starting in Perth and finishing in Broome over 4 weeks.  Planned Stops at this stage are Perth, Dongara, Kalbarri, Monkey Mia, Carnavon, Ningaloo Coral bay, Exmouth, Onslow, Mackerel Islands, Point Samson, Port Hedland and Broome.                   I will mostly be landbased, but where time permits (and the New Wife) I'm keen on getting out on a few charters.  Mainly Sportfishing, GT’s etc.  Happy to do a bit of Bottom Bouncing to take home a fish here and there.  Any tips/recommendation’s on either topic would be greatly appreciated.  I attached a few pics of catches from the past.  Hope you like em.... Regards,Mick

Just trying to gather some info on Waroora. I have stayed their for a week years ago land based fishing only.

But this time we are a taking a 4.8m Topender and a 4m tinny.

Between Waroora and Gnarloo their would have to be quite a few surf breaks on the outer reefs, anyone would like to let me in on their secrets about the best surf spots along that stretch.

Also fishing is it worth it to travel outwide or just work the drop offs in close and look out for bait schools out on the flats.

Have any of you had much luck with sailfish in that area.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett today introduced a new bill into the House of Representatives to allow the continuation of recreational fishing of mako and porbeagle sharks.

Mr Garrett said the amendments to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) provide for a balance between protecting the shark species in a way that reflects our national circumstances and does not disproportionately affect recreational fishers.

“The recent listing of mako and porbeagle sharks under the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), which was based primarily on concerns for northern hemisphere populations, meant that they automatically had to be protected under the national environment law.

“However, with a lack of evidence to suggest that Australian populations of these shark species face the same threats as other parts of the world, and as there would be no demonstrably significant conservation benefit from banning recreational fishing for these species, the Government is acting to ensure that recreational fishers can continue to catch these sharks,” Mr Garrett said.

“Australia takes its international obligations seriously, however we also believe that our national environment law should properly reflect our international obligations while also providing the flexibility to properly take into account our particular domestic circumstances. That is what this change will achieve.”

Mr Garrett said the decision to make the change was backed by an independent review of the national environment law handed to the Government late last year, which identified that the EPBC Act was too inflexible in requiring species on Appendix II to the CMS to be automatically listed as migratory, and by having only limited exceptions when it comes to interactions with listed species.

“While the Government will consider this recommendation in the context of a broader review of the EPBC Act, this amendment cannot wait for the full review process.

“A number of Government MPs, including the Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman, and the Member for Braddon, Sid Sidebottom, have been promoting the need for a practical solution to this issue within Government, and I’m pleased to say we will deliver that and I look forward to this bill passing through the Parliament quickly.”

Mr Garrett said the Environment Department had been working with fishing tournament organisers to enable events to proceed in the interim period since January 29 when the listing of the species took effect. The Government had also indicated that catch and release fishing for the shark species was not expected to have a significant impact on populations and was therefore unlikely to be subject to enforcement action.

The Environment Department is also working with fishery managers to improve data on mako and porbeagle sharks in Australian waters, to provide a more comprehensive information base on these shark species for the future.

The Government is working to ensure shark conservation globally, including by pursuing a global Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks earlier this month. This MOU is one example of Australia’s commitment to shark conservation, and is a welcome step towards enhanced international cooperation and collaboration on the conservation of these species, in keeping with our obligations under the Convention.

 Most of our time is spent in Jurien.  We  used to catch heaps of dhues and baldies but now not many at all.  You still see plenty of fish coming in but not on our boat.  Anyone know where to start again.  Might see you there over march april.

As some of you may know ive tee'd up a job in Karratha and moving there at the end of next month!

Just a few Q's for the lads up there:

What is the best frequency/range on the water? VHF i presume?

Coming into this time of year, what species turn on?

Mostly keen on the popping, trolling baits/hardbodies, jigging and high speed spinning for G's, Queenie's, Sailys, Macks etc. Are these types of fishing accessable for a 4.2m widebody centre console?

Any other input on what to do/what to look out for up there would be mint.

Only fished Dampier/Karratha once last year shorebased and seem to have the bluebone and other little shore based GTs, Brassys and Queenies sussed. Just after a bit more info on the wider side of things.

Can anyone help with some tips on how to catch a feed of squid?  I have never been before so don't have a clue where to start.  I have access to a 5.3m runabout and will be launching from Dawesville way.  I have no idea on times, tides, areas, what weather conditions to go in etc so any help/ideas at all is much appreciated!

Just an idea to solve the problem of bait spinning and dropping tail first, when using a running sinker & rigging bait head first.

By placing a small bean or barrel sinker between the snelled hooks!

My theory is, it will increase hookups on the drop, because your bait will fall either head first or horizontally like it would if it was alive :)

Maybe even better for rigging a whole squid (hood first), to make it look like it is alive and swimming backwards...

Anyway... I can't go snapper fishing for a couple of weeks, so if anyone wants to give it a go, can ya get me some feedback...

Just wondering what types of set up, lures, bait, outfit you would use and whether you troll or cut the motor and cast? Do they spook like tuna?

I thought this was the right time of year to get them but haven't seen to many reports. Probably because it blow's all the time i guess.

The world's most stunning coral reefs will have dissolved within 100 years, a new study claims.

Scientists
say rising levels of acid in the seas and warmer ocean temperatures are
wiping out the spectacular reefs enjoyed by millions of divers,
tourists and wildlife lovers.

The destruction would also be a
disaster for tropical fish and marine life which use coral reefs as
nurseries and feeding grounds.

The Great Barrier Reef off Australia's coast
(above) is known for its abundance of marine life. However, the area
has seen a rise in coral bleaching events (below). Scientists believe
rising acid levels in the sea will kill all the reefs within a century

Dr Jacob Silverman, from the Carnegie Institution in Washington said
rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were making seas more
acidic.

His studies suggest reefs stop growing and start
breaking up when the amount of the greenhouse gas reaches twice its
pre-industrial level.

If current trends continue, this is expected to be by the end of the 21st century.

'These
ecosystems, which harbour the highest diversity of marine life in the
oceans, may be severely reduced within less than 100 years,' he said.

Reef-building
corals are highly sensitive to the acidity and temperature of the
seawater in which they grow, Dr Silverman told the annual meeting of
the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Diego.

Oceans soak up carbon dioxide greenhouse gas from the atmosphere, but in doing so become more acidic.

When the acid levels rise too high it prevents coral from extracting minerals from seawater to build their hard skeletons.

Dr
Silverman's team studied the metabolism of a northern Red Sea coral
reef to work out how sensitive it was to changes in the climate.

The
research showed that the ability of the coral to build new structures
depended hugely on water acidity. Sea temperature played a smaller role.

Dr
Silverman said: 'A global map produced on the basis of these
calculations shows that all coral reefs are expected to stop their
growth and start to disintegrate when atmospheric carbon dioxide
reaches 560 parts per million  - double its pre-industrial level - ,
expected by the end of the 21st century.'

Another speaker at the meeting highlighted a second threat to coral linked to global warming.

Dr
Simon Donner said increasing ocean temperatures made reefs more
susceptible to bleaching, caused by the loss of algae on which coral
depend.

Corals have a symbiotic relationship with the microscopic algae that live in their tissues.

As well as giving coral its vibrant colour, the algae provide the reef creatures with most of their energy.

When
sea temperatures rise too high the association between coral and algae
breaks down. The coral then effectively expel the algae and turn white.
Once this happens the coral is deprived of energy and dies.

Dr
Donner, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said: 'Even
if we froze emissions today, the planet still has some warming left in
it. That's enough to make bleaching dangerously frequent in reefs
worldwide.'

Mass bleaching events were extremely rare 30 years ago but had become increasingly common in recent years, he said.

In
2006, severe bleaching struck the southern part of Australia's Great
Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world.

Hi guys ,going down to busselton /dunsborough at the end of April ,for a couple of weeks and will be staying at siesta park in geographe bay, just wondering if anyones fished the beach and jetty at siesta park? And if so wat can you get there? Also should there be salmon around at that time of year were is the best spot to target them ? Cheers.

Just got the old dive suit out of my bag ready to get back into a few dives and found that the wet suit has shrunk severly whilst stored away  ??   anyway iam looking at any suggestions where to go for a good deal and what types are recomended ,  i had a 6mm two piece Sonar but the new ones now are mainly one piece and some are semi dry type and super stretch ?

A friend wants to sort out a fishing charter for work and I suggested maybe jigging for Sambos. I fish off the shore and have only limited experience with charters. Is there an operator someone would like to recommend? Looking for a quality operator with good tackle and all the rest of it so no Alveys on pool cues! Their limit is about $300 -$400 per person...

I'm planning a trip north with the wife in the 3rd/4th week of November. At this stage Ningaloo is looking like the probably destination.

I don't have a boat so plan to do some surf fishing while up that way and was looking for some advice - any location in particular that jumps out as a great spot to stay for up to a week or so?

What sort of fishing can I expect - and am I right in saying I have probably picked an average month of the year to go up that far fishing wise?

As we will have a 4 month old baby...powered campsite / facilities would be preferred.

My brother and i are heading out with southern cross charters next week... only our second time out with a charter

our first encounter night fishing with bluejuice was an expensive waste of time which deterred thoughts of going out again for a while.

so we thought it was time to give it another go bottom bashing this time during the day ;) just asking for some advice:

is it a good idea to catch some fresh bait to take with us... squid, whiting?

should we bring our own rod/reel and should this include rigs & tackle if we do?

I am currently using a Shimano Lacunas jig rod to bottom bounce and I am finding it a little long to be a true boat rod.

I like fishing with a spin reel, The Saragosa 8000 and was thinking off a Monster mesh to match it.
