Axle Buddie
Submitted by Craig Pearse on Sun, 2010-01-24 13:02Question,
I just towed my boat 240kms and 1 wheel lost 3 axle buddies throughout the trip.
The bearings are new and I didnt over fill the buddies with grease but this wheel kept on throwing them off.
I have been told to put loctite on it or change out the bearing but as I have told them that its a new bearing and is in good nick .
Has anybody else had the same problem and if so what was the answer ?
Cheers ,
Craigo

Suggestions Required for assignment!
Submitted by daboogeyxen on Sat, 2010-01-23 16:31Hey guys,
Im currently doing an assignment in uni regarding the Fisheries Depts re-opening of Cockburn Sound for fishing and as people who fish there often know, the place is JAM PACKED nowadays with rude people and people keeping undersized crabs. I just wanna open up a discussion to see what can be done to help stop this madness.
p.s does anyone know what is the maximun number of crab pots allowed per pax?
Fish for the future.

Esperence bottom bouncing - any tips
Submitted by boofo on Sat, 2010-01-23 09:33Anyone willing to share a few tips on where to try for snapper out of Bandy Creek? Been here a week with the kids catching skippy and herring, but now they've gone home and I've got a few days to try to get some bigger fish, and the wind has stopped blowing (at least for now). Heading out to Cull Island today to see if I can find some, but I've never had much luck down here finding snapper, so would welconme any hints.
Thanks,

Tagged Wobbegongs may solve mysteries
Submitted by bod on Fri, 2010-01-22 19:50
Never, ever pull a wobbegong's tail.
While this may be sound advice when dealing with any shark, the normally docile wobbegongs have the unique ability to turn around and bite their own tail. And woe betide if your fingers are attached to it.
If harassed, they are likely to respond, Macquarie University professor of marine biology Rob Harcourt, said on Friday as five young wobbegongs were released off Manly as part of a project to unlock some of the mysteries of shark behaviour.
"They do have a very strong bite," he said as the tagged sharks swam off. "So pulling the tail is a very bad idea."
Children looked on excitedly as a Macquarie University researcher waded knee deep into the water to release the copper-spotted sharks off Shelly Beach in northern Sydney.
Prof Harcourt, who is overseeing the project, says the research has two aims - to restock depleted shark numbers and monitor the adaptation of captive sharks in the wild.
"The catch rate (for wobbegongs) has halved over a 10-year period," he said. "This brought about concern in NSW about whether or not numbers have fallen."
For the survey, the wobbegongs have acoustic tags sewn into their abdominal cavities, with the ceramic devices roughly the size of a small finger emitting a unique signal.
These signals will be picked up by the Australian Acoustic Tagging and Monitoring system, which has receivers placed all over Australia.
"The system allows researchers to monitor the movements of sharks," said Prof Harcourt.
It also allows researchers to see if sharks are protected within Sydney's Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve off Manly, where they have been released.
"If they stay in one area then it means that aquatic reserves like this one might be an effective means of protecting them," said Prof Harcourt.
The first release of 10 wobbegongs in the reserve last September provided encouraging results, Prof Harcourt said.
"Four of those sharks are still being protected here in the reserve."
He said the released sharks were showing similar behaviour to wild animals.
"One of the many problems of releasing any animal from captivity into the wild is that it has to learn hunting behaviour and hiding from predators - it might be very vulnerable and it might die."
Wobbegong is a Aboriginal word meaning "beard", referring to the shaggy growths around the sharks' mouths.
While the juvenile sharks released on Friday measured just 50cm, they can grow up to three metres in length and are generally found in shallow water feeding on a diet of squid, yellow tail, octopus and crab.
Despite the wobbegongs' tail-twisting trick, Prof Harcourt said beachgoers had little to fear about the sharks.
"They are very docile," he said.- 3 comments

200otimax vs 200etec
Submitted by fisho-ron on Fri, 2010-01-22 15:44looks like we are definatly buying a new engine and we a torn between these two. 4 strokes are just to heavy.
2009 200hp etec and 2009 200hp optimax
has anyboy out there done the swap and for what reasons? more interested in the bad things that can go wrong.
i am leaning towards the etec, as they are about 30kg lighter and the sevicing is cheaper.

I was wondering if you guys had any advice on good fishing spots, im
not after any ones secret spots just a push in the right direction. I

Also if you have any charters you would recommend for serious fishing
ie kingfish jigging or targeting jewfish/mulloway or snapper.

Electric Reel Ban (NSW not WA)
Submitted by Tim on Fri, 2010-01-22 10:24This was talked about in WA not long ago but it now looks like NSW proposing to move ahead with an electric reel ban.
I wonder how long before they try to raise it here again if other states move forward with this?
10. Electric reels
Electric fishing reels are generally used when targeting deep water fish species such as
gemfish, blue-eye trevalla (blue-eye cod), hapuku, banded rock cod (bar cod) and bass groper.
Electrical reels appear to be increasing in availability and popularity. The current bag and size limits were developed based on traditional harvest methods of deck/hand winches. The bag and size limits are currently 5 deep sea fish in total, only 2 gemfish, and a boat trip limit of 10 gemfish. With such limits in place, deep water species can also be prone to high grading. They also are unlikely to survive any catch and release practices.
I&I NSW is becoming increasingly concerned about the current escalating investment and use of electric reels for fishing in NSW and potential impacts on deep sea fisheries resources. The majority of council members considered the use of electric reels was not a, traditional, acceptable form of recreational fishing and therefore, the use of powered/electric reels should be restricted.
Note: Electric reels are often necessary to allow people with disabilities to fish successfully. It is considered that the use of electric reels by people with disabilities is acceptable. Electric reels are also commonly used by charter boat operators but are already heavily restricted by the boat limit of 10 gemfish.
Motion: The council supports the banning of electric reels, subject to a permit system for
acceptable use (e.g. to assist disabled fishers). The council recommends that the ban be
implemented during the next review of bag and size limits and that the Minister consider issuing an investment warning in the near future to advise the recreational fishing sector of this position.
Moved: Charlie Howe. Seconded: John Drew. Carried. (Against: John Humphries, Ann Garard, Neil Ryan).
Here's a link to the entire meeting.

I'm planning on a ballooning trip soon to Wagoe to chase Pelagics and with my last attempt going not to plan due to little knowledge on the correct rigs I'd like members input as to the best rig setups from this spot. Diagrams much accepted.
