Whats so good about Bream?
Submitted by kane on Tue, 2009-03-10 04:14Hey guys,
Heres one that might get some people talking, maybe even get some die hard followers heckles up, well see....
Bream, having never really spent time river fishing and always focusing on the oceans i have never ever caught one, I have only ever attempted to catch them on one attempt when camping at moore river where we trauled and cast lures all day without a hint of success.
I have seen the shows so many times it has gotten very boring to me watching them, they cast near branches in the water so we did too, we cast near reeds, we cast far from the boat, near the boat, trauled the edges, the middle, upways, downways, zig zagged, basically tried everything except the use of dynamite to get one.
Ive had this discussion with friends over beers and no one I hang out with understands it so my question is what is basically so great about bream? They are regularely on tv fishing shows, they have bream tournaments now that have recently and continue to gather quite a following.
Do they taste spectacular? Are they a great fighting fish? Is it that they are so painfully hard to get to bite so any catch gives a great feeling of accomplishment? To me they are quite a small species so must surely only put up a great fight on very light gear....
To me it seems the following has definately grown due to alot of advertising on tv shows and the like but maybe there is good reason for this? Maybe they really are the holy grail of fishing as the likes of Rex hunt, Starlo and Bushy so claim.
Having never caught one maybe if I was to one day hook up on one i might also realise the magnitude of this highly worshiped fish.
Thanks guys, I am looking forward to being enlightened on the species Bream

Weekend Forecast
Submitted by johno on Mon, 2009-03-09 13:47Hi Fellow Fisho's
I hate this weather pattern, I am at work, looking outside the window, no wind, nice skys and looking at the seabreeze forecast and it's perfect for the next few days.. thats fantastic for those that have the next few days off and can go fishing!
Look at the weekend ahead... it's crap!
I will keep my fingers crossed and hope it improves.
For those that are lucky enough to go out, tease us all on your advertures and catch

Salmon Sitings NOR
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Mon, 2009-03-09 08:09I managed to sneek out to Flat Rock yesterday arvo with some small gear. I burleyed up and drew a laerge school of good sized Gar Fish and filled my bucket with fat Herring in a matter of an hour or so. I also managed to hook probably the larges Ray in the ocean. It was fun watching the line spool but I had to concede a fair chunk of braid after not too long.
During the small fish frenzie, I noticed small schools of Salmon swimming right on the reef edge. 2 schools in about 30 minutes. They didn't appear to be huge fish or larges schools but it's a great sign of early action this year. I wasn't prepared for the schools so I just observed with some degree of frustration!

Learning new techniques
Submitted by Snort on Sun, 2009-03-08 20:27Hi guys,
I've been looking at a lot of videos recently and lots of people using fly rods, baitcaster reels etc... which are all new to me. I've done a lot of fishing when i was younger but just using standard surf rods and eggbeater reels.
Do you think it's important to learn to use a baitcaster reel and how many of you learn new techniques (such as fly fishing in the ocean)?

how to clean/cook a shark?
Submitted by eddie on Fri, 2009-03-06 16:36Hey boys and girls!
Today for the second time in recent trips my mate brad and I caught a shark while fishing for demersals. From reading your posts, this seems a common accurance in WA. We released both of these bc we didn't know much about what to do with them and didn't want to waste them. I've got some questions that would be a big help to me and probably other people on the site.
Firstly, what are the best sharks to eat? Maybe you could rank the commonly caught sharks of WA.
What are the best eating sizes? or how big is too big to eat? Today I caught a 4.5 foot bronzie, which is the biggest shark I've ever landed btw. Too big to eat or perfect size?
How do you clean a shark? besides the obvious meaty areas, what are the bits you eat? fins?
Any and all help, including videos or other helpful sites would be greatly appreciated! Maybe this thread could turn into a handy tutorial for people who are new to this type of fishing.
cheers to the most helpful group of fishos on the web!! Pics and report of todays offshore adventures to follow in the next day or so.

FIRST CATCH FOR "SALMON ANDY"
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-03-06 09:29SHERBS and I decided to visit a local beach to try our luck with the resident school of salmon.

This young fellow, who later identified himself as Andy from Thailand, decided to stop and watch Sherbs in action and son had the thrill of his life when Steve hoked him up with a nice little salmon. It was the first fish he had ever caught and he was really happy.
Good onya Sherbs for introducing the joys of fishing to another young bloke.
As for ourselves, the salmon hunting was hampered by some local swimmers and surfers who decided that where we wanted to fish was the best place to be - deespite there being no waves.
They finally moved on when the sun set and we managed to finally get into some fish.
Sherbs picked up a nice little flatty, a rock cod and a small bream.

I eventually got my mojo back and picked up a pair of small tailor and a herring. Interestingly, the herring swam past my bait and grabbed the "popper" on a surf popper rig.
It was a beautiful evening, with just enough sea breeze to make it interesting.
All the best, Colin Hay

Sunday Weather
Submitted by Stevef on Thu, 2009-03-05 19:42probably still a bit early, but how is everyone seeing the weather for Sunday.
The forecast was spot on yesterday, but typically it is changing rapidly. The early morning forecast is for stronger winds now, with a later drop off.
Monday and Tuesday are looking special, but Murphy's Law being what it is I will be away over east.
Interested in your thoughts
Steve
p.s. Might be in the market for a deckie sunday, if anyone is interested.
