Re Cockburn Snapper
Submitted by Paul N on Sun, 2007-08-26 12:46Hi All
Ant to take the boat for a run Monday but the bad weather makes me think Snapper in the Sound could be a good idea. Am I wasting my time fishing for them in the daytime ? I have never fished in the sound and would like to try and catch a pinkie if they can be caught in the daytime.
Any advice welcome , time of day , bait to use , where to try.
Thanks
Paul

Curado 300
Submitted by ian.young on Sat, 2007-08-25 18:08Hi guys, does anyone out there own a 300 curado? I'm considering buying one as a barra reel, but my only concern is that it might not cast as well as the 200-sized curado, which I've used and liked. How does the 300 go throwing smallish lures like Flatz Ratz at snags? I want to get the 300 because the extra capacity would allow me to use it for trolling too. Planning to put 30lb braid on it. I currently use a calcutta 400, but compared to a curado, it feels pretty average to cast with.

Swan fish comp rules & BBQ arrangements
Submitted by Andy Mac on Thu, 2007-08-23 15:54Rules for the comp are going to be as simple as possible. Everything caught gets measured and logged on a piece of paper. At the end of the comp the papers must be handed in to either Tim or myself to be eligible for a prize. Start time 6-30am and finish by 11-00am with prizes awarded around 11-30am. BBQ lunch provided from around 12-00pm.
To ensure everyone plays ball, we will split everyone into pairs, whereby the other angler must sign your scorecard (just like in golf) to confirm your catch. So it is important to ensure your fishing buddy for the day verifies each and every fish caught. Details of who the pairings will be will be posted shortly, sorry but they won;t be father son teams or best buddy teams, but there is nothing stopping you fishing next to your buddy if that's what you want to do.
The list you draw up must have the anglers name, species caught and length (jaw to tail fork). with signature of buddy angler at the bottom.
Prizes for the Swan fish comp will include the following:
Cash $100 approx
Tackle vouchers $150 (Courtesy of Compleat Angler Joondalup)
$110 voucher for a 2 hour massage (Courtesy of Alfred)
Some flexibility in prizes will be expected depending on what gets caught on the day and how many end up entering.
Prize categories will include longest fish, most fish, largest total catch length and classic catch.
As was the case with the NOR v SOR comp we will offer up some cash for best photo taken on the day, so make sure you take a heap of pics and load them up on the site for Bruiser to judge. If you still have some pics from either comp that haven't been seen yet make sure you remember to load them up otherwise you miss out on the chance at a prize. I will try and get some movie footage of a few of you fighting some monster bream and telling us all your secret techniques and splice the best bits up to load onto the site for all to have a laugh at.
The NOR v SOR comp presentations will include several prizes, including Champion Angler, who will receive the coveted trophy and a $120 voucher for Landscape or Horticultural consultation courtesy of Jody.
Second place overall will receive a $50 Hogsbreath voucher
Third place will receive $25 cash.
I still have the shirt, siglet & beanie to give to Kal and his team for the NOR champion boat category and also Steve's trophy for champion angler.
As for the BBQ
We (Fishwrecked) will be putting on a sausage sizzle, (sausages, buns, onions and sauces) so there should be plenty to eat for everyone, unless you want to bring down some of your own food, then that's fine. As for drinks we thought it would be best for everyone to BYO, given we can't cater for everyone's tastes. We will probably have a few soft drinks available but not a lot.
Depending on our budget we may even cook up some bacon & eggs for those fishing the comp in the early morning. Tim will give more detail on that later on, since he is likely to be the chef at that time in the morning.

Submitted by luke george on Mon, 2007-08-20 16:03I have heard the pinkies have been in the sound lately. Went out on friday night for them but the anchor rope got sliced by braid on a big first run from something so had to leave. Can anyone point me in the right direction for pinkies, i was thinking in between garden and carnac but if anyone has caught any lately and is willing to tell where would be greatly apreciated

some guidance needed
Submitted by Simon C on Sun, 2007-08-19 13:13I need some direction here from people who have done it. I have a week off around the new moon in October and want to head North, was originally thinking Onslow and hit Thev, but I was wondering is there anywhere people can recommend that is a bit closer that will not be too risky with regards to weather. I am towing the boat up and was tossing up gnaraloo or just going to exmouth or coral bay as I have never been to either. For anyone who has fished these around oct novemebr what are some pros and cons/advice. I am mainly looking to throw some big poppers and chase pelagics so the bottom fishing is not a big concern wherever I go. Is Kalbarri worth a look, or too rough?
Thanks in advance.

Annual Boat Servicing
Submitted by Robert N on Sat, 2007-08-18 14:09
Looking for someone to do the annual service on a Yamaha 115 4 stroke. Currently been getting my Boat Serviced with a well known Boating Sales and Servicing outlet. ( not sure on the protocol with regard to naming them ) Purchased boat from new and felt that it makes sense to have them do the service on it. But after numerous problems occurring after each service have decided it is time for a change. Was hoping somebody could make a recommendation.
Cheers

Casting Weight on Rods
Submitted by rickets on Wed, 2007-08-15 20:22Was just talking to Hoju on MSN and im puzzled...
You know when you look down on your rod and it has "lure weight 28 grams - 40 grams" its pretty self explanitory....
But is that specifically talking about lures, taking into consideration that this would be the optimum weight to keep the lure's action and movement the best?
Or is this the optimum casting weight aswell??? Because now I think about it....
How much would a whole mulie ganged or snelled on a paternoster rig, using a size 4 star or snapper sinker rig weigh? Surely a whole mulie would nearly be like 40-60 grams by itself, combine hooks and then the sinker itself would be 80-100 grams...
Im trying to suss out what the max any given rod could give before putting itself in danger :P

NOR v SOR Presentation BBQ & Swanfish mini comp 25/8/07 - Saturday
Submitted by Andy Mac on Tue, 2007-08-14 21:22OK Guys and Gals, we have a date set on 25th August (provided its not raining cats & dogs). Venue to be Burswood foreshore as mentioned by Jangles, Hoju and Rickets among others as being a suitable spot to fish from shore and gather for a few refreshments.
The presentation will involve the awarding of the champion angler for the entire event plus a few awards that were missed at the NOR comp. We have some prize money left over so will use most of that to supplement refreshments if we can. Depending on how many are likely to turn up will dictate if we put on snaggs or liquid refreshments or both etc.
In order to have some prizes for the Swan Fish mini comp it would be appreciated if those wishing to enter the comp donate $10 each to the prize pool as was the case with the NOR and SOR legs. All donations will be returned in prizes, unfortunately it will not be as heavily subsidised by sponsors as the Blue Water events, never the less we still have some great prizes on offer.
If you don;t want to fish the comp please still come on down and catch up with everyone on the day, make some new friends and maybe score some new fishing buddies.
I will post another thread where you can nominate to enter the comp and another to nominate to just come to the bbq. Please place your names there so we can get an idea of how many are going to turn up.
Given that its a shore based comp only, it will need to be conducted within eyesight of the bbq area, where we will have a few fishwrecked crew running around with scales trying to weigh the fish caught, so as to allow those wishing to practice C&R to do so and still possibly win a prize. I suggest we start the comp at 6-30am (sunrise) and finish it at 11-00am with presentations by 12-00 midday and everyone then available for the bbq at 12-30pm.
Details of prize categories will be posted in the next few days, when Tim and I have worked out what the hell we are going to do.
