My partner mentioned that it was reported on Radio National today that fisheries and the cops were pulling people over on the freeway last nite in Baldivis, as a combined op targetting undersized crabs and drink driving.

As a diver I do always feel that I miss out on some of the lazy and more relaxing aspects of crabbing, ie; sitting on my arse in a tinny with a coldy, waiting for the crab nets to do their magic. Good to hear people suffering for taking the lazy route ;)

Apparently there were 19 charges laid, not sure if that was for the crabs or all up?

are there any generous people in the exmouth to karratha region that would like to take me and the future bride out for a day.

we are getting married on the 20th march and are taking a month off afterwards and travelling north we will be heading up to cape leveque and back and staying at many places inbetween. so if there is anyone that would like to take us out please let me know. we will be taking our tin can but would like to get out for some bigger fish. we are happy to pay our way and we have our own gear. but be prepared to be out fished by my misses she always manages to catch bigger fish then me i think i might need to tamper with her gear.

hey    all, i was thinking of heading up alkimos maybe next weekend or so, has anyone had any recent luck there,people have told me its a great spot for shark fishing from shore??   the alkimos wreck is only a few hundres metres from shore and can be seen so maybe all the fish are attracted.  any advice please

Headed out for a fish yesterday. First drop for the day resulted in a nice dhuy for myself. As the goal for the day was to fish some deeper water we decided to move on. Next spot produced a couple more dhuys. One male and one female. The female was in better shape so it went back. As the wind died we headed out further. After a bit of sounding around and some good advice from fellow fish wrecked member, managed to find some nice pinkies(Cheers Jeff). With a great feed in the esky and the day still reasonable early I decided to try a spot on the way in that occasionally has good numbers of sambos. When we reached the spot the sounder was showing a massive school of fish above a ledge. Had to be sambos. On with the jigs and down we went. Didnt even get to the bottom and I was smashed. The first drift resulted in a triple hook up of sambos, all three boated and released. The next couple of hours was crazy with serveral more multiple hook ups.  Had a mate from South OZ with us who had never caught a sambo. He was stoked, couldn't believe how hard they pull. I was also happy that I got to christen my new JM Power Spell rod. Wow, great little rod. After a long day it was time to head home.

heading out tonight in search of pinkys nor will be inside the three mile on my snapper spots leaving round 5 ish providing wind stays as seabreeze predicts and looking for another tinny to come along.
size is no issue i have a 3.75 m tinny and it does it easy just, thought id throw it out there see if any one is keen as its not to often you get a window like this to chase big pinkys out of tinnys.

went out today with my mate ron to christen his boat after been out of the water for a coat of paint and a new engine! turned out to be my best fishing day in metro waters.first spot we got to about 8am dropped the lines and nothing but a big school of trumpeters (we know there was nothing there cause we run an underwater camera on the bottom and wath it on a tv in the cabin.)

no worries time to move motored over to another lump and bang first drop 5kg dhui on the scales. second drop bang another dhui around 4kgs didnt weigh it it was realeased much to my mates discust!he says to me might as well move there will be no more dhuis here, well boy was he wrong! next drop 6.5 kg dhui kept! determined to prove him wrong i ended up catching 7 dhuis in about 40 mins 5 were released and all went back fine as we were only in 18mts! well me mate thought stuff this and had a drop himself only to be busted off by something big (my mate ron is old school and only fishes with 80 pound handlines)it was a big fish 5 seconds after this happened bang my xoga buckles over something feirce i thought here we go this aint no 5kg dhui but alass it wasnt to be busted off in a hole i think.

oh well iwasnt fazed after all the action we deciced to move on and return again on sunday for another 2 keepers! i rerigged with some trawling gear and we proceeded to trawl for an hour with no interest, decided to look at a lump that my mate hasnt fished for a few years dropped the paternosta down again and bang double header of skippy and i continued to do that for about an hour great fun on the light rod prob caught 30 plus skippy in the 400mm range as well as around 25 pink snapper all undersize thou a cpl were real close! no matter all went back bar 10 skippy ronnie loves em also pulled 2 blackass and prob 6 rock cod for the dog! decided to call it a day as pretty exhausted and back in the pen by 4pm.

 was an absolutely fantastic day the water was nice enough and wasnt to hot you couldnt wipe the smile off my face with a hammer! thanks to ronnie see u again on sun! will post some pics tomoro as to buggered from cathin fish lol bring on sunday cheers adam

Specialist scientists at a workshop in Perth this week have been identifying a treasure trove of marine sponges and have confirmed unexpectedly high biodiversity in deep Western Australian waters off Ningaloo Reef.

The workshop for expert taxonomists (scientists who specialise in the classification of biological organisms), convened by Dr Christine Schönberg of AIMS, has brought together participants from around Australia and internationally.

More than 1000 sponge samples complement more than 600 invertebrate species that have been collected from deep waters of Ningaloo Reef through previous expeditions by AIMS and the Western Australian Museum.

Senior Curator at the Western Australian Museum, Dr Jane Fromont, said that some of the species found on the survey were rare and strange, such as the stony sponges that are quite different to the more familiar soft bath sponges. A renowned international expert on these Lithistid sponges, Dr Andrzej Pisera from the Institute of Paleobiology in Warsaw, Poland, is at the workshop identifying animals from this group.

"Many of samples being examined by the team of taxonomists at the workshop are either new discoveries for Western Australia or new to science," Dr Fromont said.

The new collections of sponges were gathered from the sea floor in waters between 20 and 120 metres deep and were accompanied by a rich profusion of other floor-dwelling marine life including corals, sea whips, sea fans and basket stars.

"Samples were taken from extensive sponge gardens that display an unusual richness and density of filter feeders. Sponge gardens are also known from southern Australian coasts between Exmouth and Sydney with new reefs being discovered on recent AIMS/GA voyages in northern Australia, indicating the importance of these ecosystems," said Dr Chris Battershill, leader of AIMS’ biodiversity research

"These animals are all filter feeders and the richness of their communities points to highly productive plankton food sources around Ningaloo that we believe are fuelled by the regular upwelling of deep nutrient-rich waters," Dr Battershill said.

"Sponges have existed in the sea for hundreds of millions of years. This long history has allowed them to evolve into diverse forms so that they can live in an extensive range of marine environments from the tidal zone to the floors of the deep ocean," he said.

AIMS scientist Dr Andrew Heyward, who has led multiple expeditions to Ningaloo Reef over the past decade, was also at the workshop. "The project has shown that the deepwater habitats are even richer than previously thought and suggests that there are still many discoveries to be made with more fieldwork," Dr Heyward said.

Ningaloo Reef is one of the largest and least studied coral reef ecosystems in the world. Filling the gaps in understanding patterns and processes of tropical marine biodiversity in this system is a priority for AIMS.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today launched the $2 million redevelopment of the Jurien Bay foreshore.

The foreshore project, which received $750,000 from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Wheatbelt Regional Grants Scheme, includes the construction of a new jetty; soundshell and stage area; and redevelopment of the surrounding foreshore park.

“This funding will assist with the construction of the featured jetty and help attract further investment into the project, which will eventually include a mixed commercial and recreational centre,” Mr Grylls said.

The project is also being funded through the Shire of Dandaragan’s Country Local Government Fund allocation ($539,000) and an additional $500,000 raised through a special rates system. It has also attracted support from industry, with the Ardross Group contributing $200,000.

“This is a great example of what can be achieved with a strong local focus from the community and the Shire of Dandaragan; and strong partnerships with other stakeholders,” the Minister said.

“The redevelopment of the foreshore will ensure this area is used for a multitude of community events and will be enjoyed by locals and visitors.”

The project is expected to be completed in October 2010, aligning with the increase in visitor numbers expected from the completion of Indian Ocean Drive.

Hi all, A few whispers are starting to filter out from down south that the salmon are starting to make an appearance.

I thought I would start this post so that anyone who hears any news (and I am really hoping it will be reliable news) of salmon movements can pass the information on.

I for one, am waiting to firm up my plans for some serious salmon forays this year. And I know there are a lot of other members who are doing the same, so we can help each other out here by keeping this post updated.

Billionaire Sir Richard Branson today unveiled his latest toy - an underwater plane.

The $655,000 prototype submersible is called the Necker Nymph and can dive
to depths of up to 39.6 metres. Sir Richard hopes to one day explore depths
of 10.66 kms - which is far more than the height of Mount Everest.

The Virgin Necker Nymph will dive up to 39.6 metres under the waves. It is made from carbon fibre and has fighter jet technology

Sir
Richard plans to hire the Nymph out to visitors of his luxury hideaway,
Necker Island. Gliding like an aeroplane through the water it can carry
a pilot and two visitors on a two-hour trip.  After undergoing scuba training, guests can uncover ancient shipwrecks, fly side-by-side with dolphins or follow whales. 

Such a unique experience comes at a
price of course. The Nymph is available to hire for $25,000 a week, but only after you have forked out a minimum of $88,000 for seven nights on the luxury catamaran, the Necker Belle.

The
luxury sub has fighter jet technology and is piloted with a joystick.
While most subs use ballast to propel subs under the water, the Nymph
uses downward 'lift' on the wings to fly down.

It was designed and built by Graham Hawkes, chief of Hawkes Ocean Technologies and is the first of its kind.

'The Nymph is an entirely new class of vehicle for us - think of
a sleek Convertible under water. It is different from our other
submersibles because it was specifically designed to dive to scuba
depths in tropical waters.

It has the flexibility to glide peacefully over glorious reefs or bank adventurously in 360 degree turns.'

The sub, which is part of its Deep Flight range, is 'hydrobatic' with individual 'wind shields' that removes the pressure of slipstream. This means the sub can have an open cockpit that gives guests panoramic views.

The sub had a low environmental impact.

'Its positive buoyancy prevents the sub from landing on a reef, and its low light and noise emissions ensure the fragile ocean ecosystems remain undisturbed.'

Sir Richard is expecting the sub to be delivered on February 20.

Hi There,

I am new to the whole boat fishing scene in Perth, and have just bought myself a 12ft dinghy with 9.9hp engine.

 Please can someone advise me where to go fishing in the ocean. I dont want to go too far out because it is only a small boat, and just realy want to get a feed of herring/whiting/skippy/reef fish etc.

hey guys, i work on a cray boat out from two rocks.

latley weve been seeing a fair few schools of fish hitting the surface (with quite big splashes might i add) after baitfish with birds working above.

beeing the keen angler i am and not able to have a cast at these supicious splashes, i was just wondering if anyone could suggest what they might be.

i know it may sound a bit optomistic but i think they could be tuna or big bonito.

if anyone knows what they might be please let me know.
