A bloke I work with has been before and is talking it up.  Im keen on entering, who else is?

ABC 7.30pm Sunday - Ningaloo Whale Sharks

For those who are interested -

Whale Shark
Whale Shark
7:30pm Sunday, 31 Jan 2010  Nature  CC G

Whale sharks may well be the biggest fish in the sea but very little is known about them. Whale Shark follows the whale sharks on a year-long journey to try to find out more.

The
whale shark is the largest fish in the world and yet it remains a
scientific mystery. For the majority of the year they make their way
slowly though the oceans relatively unnoticed. However, on the eve of a
spectacular coral spawning event on Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, hundreds
arrive. Six weeks later, they disappear. Where do they go?

New
findings suggest that whale sharks from Australia, Africa and India
could all come from the same migratory population - meaning that this
would be the largest migration on earth. But how can we find out for
sure?

Australian marine biologist Mark Meekan, tags eight
sharks in Ningaloo. Thanks to specially designed on-shark cameras, DNA
testing and satellite tracking devices, we can follow their dramatic
journey. Mark’s theory is that the sharks are driven on their massive
journey around the world by major food events, such as occurs in the
Ningaloo Reef.

To test his theory further, Mark moves to the
tropical island of the Seychelles, where marine biologist David Rowatt
has spent the last 10 years building up the world’s largest database on
the whale shark population. Using the latest photo-identification
software, they start to compare the distinctive spot and stripe
patterns of over 3000 whale sharks - a single match would prove Mark’s
theory, and be invaluable in helping to understand more about their way
of life.

The information could also be used to save them.
Commercial fishing of whale sharks has only recently been banned in
South East Asia, but not before a substantial diminution of their
numbers. According to research whale sharks are now on average 2m
shorter than they were a century ago, highlighting the damage caused by
human action.

weather

whats with the weather reports latley?

i strickly follow the reports before heading out for a fish, cruise or whatever, last night i checked and it said strong wind warning, 2.5mtr swell etc,etc (i was not going out anyway)

but i did go for a cruise in my hot rod along the coast and it was flat as, would have been lucky to be .5mtr swell and that was right up to lunch time.

i know its only a forcast and it gets bigger when you get out there, but not that much.

am i reading it wrong or have the reports been a bit out latley?

charters

do any charters around perth target bass groper, grey banded rock cod, hapuka, big eye trevella etc? or does anyone here target them and wouldnt mind another person tagging along?

gr8 night crabbing, but had to watch out for the rays

went down to mandurah last night, and it was windy stirring up the water, making it murky to try my new ali crab scoop with the improvement in reinforcing on the side supports, after tuesdays  episode of a brand new ali scoop net breaking down, with all the supports and welds breaking down and was replaced by my local tackle store in which it was purchased.i started scooping for crabs around 9pm and got my bag limit by 1130 pm,it was hard going with the water a bit murky, and the many sting rays being hard to see, they were every where and i could swear they were circling me and my mate, which put the shites up us,we managed to get our bag limit of just size crabs, with a few over the size,  i will post up pictures of the broken  crab scoop net and also the new improved replacement, on my missus i phone ,

Selecting jig rod weights

A questions to all the jiggy jiggers out there, I'm after a new jig rod {spin } to jig 100 - 200g jigs .

It will be used in the same depth range but depending on current different weight jigs are required, so my question is which end of the range of weights do you choose ie do you go with a 150g rod to work the 100g {or there abouts } jigs but may be a bit light to work the 200g jigs when the currents running or do you go with the 200g rod which covers the heavier end but will probably be too stiff to work the 100g jigs ????? ....

Or does it all come down to quality of the blank/brand and its ability to do both jobs ???

Cheers fishfish....

So, anyone want to take me jigging on Sat?

Weather is looking the gooooooooooooooooodz!

Just want to jig for anything, few sambos would be fun and maybe some demersals... *nods* I'll be a star deckie! Will pay for all your fuel, bring some beer, take photos of your catch, cook up a huge lunch.... ok maybe not the lunch... but I'll be helpful. Also have my rec skippers ticket and have half a clue when on a boat :)

Anyways let me know if you have any spots free guys or i might just have to go bottom bashing with the uncle.

Cheers!

Ben.

Dawesville Crabs and Logue Brook Marron

Hiya

Me and a few work mates caught these crabs last weekend dropping nets out near boggy bay in the estuary.  We got our 20 in about 2 hours.  nothing too big but a couple of good ones.  It was good fun, especially for the other guys who don't get to go out much at all.  And for my 3 year old son who thinks he is the crabbing King now!  We had a great feed. That's about the 6th time this season we have bagged our limit.  I love the blue swimmers.  There are heaps down there and surprisingly quite full this year too.  Notice the old Metters cooker too. They just don't build em like they use to.  This thing is a beast for cooking 20 crabs.  About 30 mins all up including lighting the fire!

The photos of the Marron is from our Logue Brooke trip on the first night of the season.  The photos aren't that good but it was a pretty good size.  Just over 100mm from memory.  Unfortunately the wind came up before the big ones came out making it near impossible to snare for the buggers.  You could hardly see them let alone the wire nooses we were using.  It was a fluke I was able to get that one.  It was still good fun even though we only got two sized ones for the night.  I ended up letting them both go later in the night after we realised the wind was going nowhere in a hurry.  Wasn't worth cooking up two marron we thought.

Hapuka,bass etc

I'm looking for info -help on depth baits, techniques what to look for on the sounder etc on catching these monsters. I'm wating for the right day to head out and target them.

hi guys

2 of my reels (the 2 i use the most) have been clogged with sand and are now not working very efficiently.

im not sure wether to take them both in for a service or to just buy 2 new reels.

does anybody have any ideas about what i can do?

thanks

fish id

sorry no pic, i will try to describe

i was snorkelling at parker point in rotto at the reef and seen this big blue thing(nearly a metre long) with eyes on top of its head fairly close together comparied to other fish,  a longer bodied fish compaird to a snapper, which is a deep bodied fish( speaking of which, when snorkelling, one about 40cm in 3mtrs, awesome to see)

another person there said it was a blue morong? i searched this on the net and it seems to come up as what i know as a queen snapper.

any ideas

i know they have differant names for fish from the east coast to hear, so could it be something eles.

Measuring Fish

Question, when measuring fish that have a V shaped tail where do you measure too? Some people say the natural lie of the fish (including the tail) and other say only to the point where the tail splits.

Stella Owners

Am looking to upgrade and would love to hear from anyone using a Stella, what rod have you coupled up with.

Because of the price the outfit needs to be fairly flexible, as in from rocks to boat etc.

Hey guyz,,

this may be a stupid question.. but i was thinking on going for a fish tonight.. as its a full moon.. does this affect fishing conditions at all?? does it increase your chance on catching a fish?? or having a full moon limit your chance on  catching something??

Overhead or Spin?

I am looking to start fishing off a friends boat and going for bigger fish off jetties.

So i need to buy a new rod and reel.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
