$4000 abalone

This week's Cambridge Post reports that a Mt Claremont man must pay more than $4000 after being caught with more than four times the permitted amount of abalone.  The man was approached by Department of Fisheries officers at Mettams Pool in Trigg in November last year.  He tipped his bag of abalone on to a rock - the officers counted 90.  The bag limit is 20 per day per fisher.

Someone found some more tailor

I hear a lad and a lady from Fishwrecked did very nicely on the tailor this morning. I have seen a picture and there are some very fine fish in the haul.

I think they were making the most of the tailor run before thefront comnes through and blows the fishing out for a few days.

The question

Been watching a show where the presenter asks this question

You have a day to live before you die and you can have two meals what would they be?

Mine would be 1) Asian dish called Punday Cassway its a soup dish with chicken/noodles prawns and lots of condinments

                      2) Fresh Mane lobster with sour dough bread and garlic butter

So I pose the question what would your's be?

Buying an unlicensed boat and trailer

Hi guys,

l'm in a dilemma at the moment as to whether to purchase this boat as its going super cheap, however,  the nature of the sale is not so simple:

The seller claims since the boat is unlicensed there is no need to fill in any transfer boat  documents. Ditto for the trailer. I would just have to fill up a statutory agreement saying that i purchased the boat from him and then take that and register it?

Is this really the case? If so, would i just need treat it as a new boat registration and register the HIN and send the trailer over the pits?

The trouble is the trailer belongs to the guys dad who is in adelaide is unable to do the transfer. The boat he claims belongs to him, but when i ask him for the licensing information, he doesn't have it as he says he also bought the boat when it was unlicensed.

I dont think the boat or trailer is stolen, its just that the guy who owns it is a mess. Anyone encountered such a scenario and care to shed some light on the matter? Any advice would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Kackles

Pristine Walpole Waterway under Threat

Receiving pure rain straight from the Antarctic, Irwin Inlet
and the Bow River which flows into it, are among some of the most pristine and
untouched water systems anywhere in the world.
The mouth of Irwin Inlet opens to the ocean at Peaceful
Bay and provides essential breeding grounds for a significant number of diverse estuarine fish and birds.

Despite that, and the recent announcement that the south
west including the Walpole/Nornalup Inlets Marine Park, the Valley of the
Giants and stunning coastline through to Green Pool/Denmark being listed in the
world’s 10 most desirable places to visit, the Water  Corporation has announced that it is
considering damming the Bow River to supply water to Albany, 100kms away.

The planned complex would include a water treatment plant
with a 10 gigalitre capacity (Albany currently uses 4.5 gigalitres per annum);
flood 250 hectares of the Bow Valley and its tributaries;  involve bulldozing
all vegetation (riparian and surrounding) in the flood area, the majority of
which is in the proposed World Heritage Walpole Wilderness.  It will also remove 20 plus landowners and
their families from the small community infrastructure and compromise an
important water source for other district farmers.

Damming goes against the National Water Initiative of which WA is a signatory. The NWI proposes re-use and
recycling;  desalination;  rainwater/stormwater and managed aquifer
recharge - dam building being the least preferred option and receiving no
federal funding assistance, which all other methods do.   The USA and Europe are actively demolishing
dams in an effort to restore ecosystems damaged by dam development.

Crabbing North of Woodman Point

Popped into Oceanside Tackle and Marine today and picked up three more crab nets (we only had five nets when we went to Busselton last summer,)  We have never been crabbing around Perth and understand that people can crab north of Woodman Point.

Does anyone have any idea what to use as bait here in perth.  In Busselton we used spleen.  Also any clues on how long to leave the nets before pulling them would be greatfully appreciated.Smile   The kids are keen to give crabbing a go in the tinny.

Should have asked these things at Oceanside Tackle today but I was too busy looking at the DVDs and working out the release weight.

QUOBBA

Heading up to quobba in a couple of weeks and was just wondering if there is any action in regards to the mackie run?

A great light tackle day in the Pilbarra sun

Regarding Trout bait with stripey fillets.

Craig with the little one use a whole fillet or strip bait it.

Had a ball yesterday on small tuna. Great bait too. Must have hit the jackpot (birds everywhere) because caught about 30 in the 1-3kg range, but they werent Mack tuna. Had hardly any colour markings just silver. Scutes on the back. Fins bland. Maybe baby long tails but definite not Northern Blue or YFT. Any ideas?

Kept 3 (I was going to feast on Sashimi but all three got used as bait and the NW snapper (blue lined and Red throats) and strpeys (which I love to eat) loved that. Got 2 trout, just 1cm under limit. Fillets as per the NW would have gone 30cm but I just dont break rules. Probably 60 fish in total between Gillian and myself.

Kept 4 Large Stripies and two large blue lines. Just enough for a feed. Now I have to take the bloody camera out but it is not a cheapy and I use it in my job so reluctant. Have a old 5mp camera and I suppose that would be better than nothing to break the Yeh right sound off a fantastic day.

All around Courtney head with the Tuna and the shoals for the bottom. Sharked heaps but only the baits, not the fish. Decided to upgrade to the Max and boat sided a large Black tip on 10kg main and 150pd leader. Dont know the weight but about 4ft+ long and bloody angry. Nothing like going light and hearing the Saragosa work. Will post this up aswell but thanks for the info and awaiting reply.

Just thought id let you guys know incase your headed down. Also guys next to us who were crabbing were doing very very well bagging out in under ten minutes.

Carp Baits

hey everyone just been down to the preston river the other day and seen about 5 fairly small carp. They were coming out and looking at the worms which i had on. I was fishing for reddies so thats why i had worms on but i think i might go down one day and have a " river cleansing " session.

what baits are best for them????????

TAILOR are annoying

juust got back from an awesum weekend north with neil aka nelly and had a blast.
sat morn we decided to go for a jig for skippy / small sambos and ended up releasing dhuies baldies skippy and sgnt baker with.
thatt night went north of dongara in search of the ellusive mulloway . we ended up with countless tailor all over 40cm wich were a pain in the ass as they were hitting all the mulloway baits we had set out gggrrrrrrrrr only ended up with the 1 mulloway as we couldnt get the baits past the stupid tailor also got 2 other runs from unstopables.

Who got Crays ?

Have not put the pots in,and probably won't this season due to work.. Wondering how everyone went 1st morning.

I guess the divers would have done ok, how did everyone go with the pots?

Left or Right hand wind?

I'm interested to know how many people use left hand over right hand wind on their spinning reels. The obvious benefits of not having to switch hands after casting would definately be handy but is it that much of an advantage, enough to take on the left hand wind.... how long did it take to get used to, for anyone that's switched? And then how do you go using left hand for spinning and right hand for overheads?

Any other advantages of using left hand wind? Someone convince me...

Live baiting Pilbarra style

Something new to try. Will go and get some from the pylons. Question is for demersals like trout etc do you add a sinker to sort off trap it, let it swim free with a nice solid and heavy live bait hook that will fatigue it anyway etc.

Also best to hook through the front of the pectoral or behind. I would have thought behind knowing fish up here tend to eat fish head first, ie not like Tailor.

Any help will be usefull.

Cheers

Swan River polluted?

Grave fears for iconic Swan River dolphin pod after six deaths
JANE HAMMOND and ANGELA POWNALL, The West Australian November 14, 2009, 10:50 am

WA News / John Mokrzycki ©

The health of the Swan River has come under serious question after researchers revealed that dolphins that died in the waterway were found to have high levels of the banned chemical dieldrin.

A report into the deaths says the levels of dieldrin are among the highest found in marine mammals anywhere in the world.

Photos of the dead mammals show shocking skins lesions, growths and discolouration.

Of the six dolphins found dead since June, two were in such a state of decomposition that they could not be tested for contaminants.

Three of the dead dolphins were found to have high levels of contaminants including dieldrin, polychlorinated biphenyls, DDE and Zinc. A report by Murdoch University researchers on the deaths released today noted that little was known about the cumulative impact of mixtures of contaminants on the health of marine mammals.

Three of the mammals died in June and another three in September-October.

Lee Bell from the National Toxics Network said the contamination indicated that the dolphins were picking up chemicals that persisted in the environment.

He said up to 20 former landfill sites along the Swan River could be leaching poisons into the waterway and the spike in contaminants likely to result from dredging in the Fremantle Port in January could spell the end to the river’s dolphin population.

“When you get marine mammals already suffering from high levels of contaminants and you add more to the mix it can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” Mr Bell said.

He said both humans and dolphins could take up dieldrin though the skin as well as through eating contaminated fish.

Leading marine biologist Jean Paul Orsini backed Mr Bell's calls saying the threat to the dolphins from Fremantle Port's planned dredging program was too great, especially given the already vacarious state of the pod's health.

Shadow Environment Minister Sally Talbot warned swimmers, water sports lovers and people who eat fish and seafood out of the Swan River that their health could be affected.

She called on the Government to hold an urgent inquiry into the deaths of a nearly quarter of the iconic Swan River dolphins in the past five months and the presence of dieldrin in the water.

“This is very distressing news. It’s not just about the six dead dolphins in five months. It’s about the fact that half of them appear to have been killed by dieldrin. Dieldrin is one most poisonous chemicals we have known in this country and that’s why it was banned more than 20 years ago,” Ms Talbot said.

“We have no way of knowing it is a risk to humans. If there is indeed dieldrin in the Swan River, then that’s a very, very serious thing. The impact is not just upon people who like to fish and eat what they catch, but water-skiers, swimmers and anybody using our waterways.”

Ms Talbot added that she wouldn’t swim in the river herself, but it was up to people to decide that for themselves.

Environment Minister Donna Faragher said the Swan River was safe to swim in and there was no health risk from eating river fish.

“The Government has been advised by fisheries and health agencies that there is no direct risk to the public by swimming in, or by consuming any fish caught in the Swan and Canning rivers," Ms Faragher said.

"The deaths share many of the same features observed in dolphins studied elsewhere in the world."

Murdoch University researchers in collaboration with the Swan River Trust, Department of Environment and Conservation and Curtin University have investigating the dolphin deaths.

An urgent meeting of researchers and government agencies this week discussed the findings of post-mortem examinations of the dolphins.

Murdoch University wildlife biologist Dr Hugh Finn said the dead dolphins were likely to have been regular users of the Swan and Canning rivers and part of a resident community of about 20-25 dolphins.

"The deaths of the Swan River dolphins share many of the same features observed in significant mortalities of dolphins studied elsewhere in the world, including evidence of suppressed immune systems and bacterial, fungal and virus infection," he said on the ABC’s Stateline program last night.

"Entanglement in discarded fishing line is also a contributing factor, with one dolphin dying as a result of an infection arising from entanglement around its tail flukes and a second dolphin suffering from entanglement around a pectoral fin and a fish hook lodged in its oesophagus."

Two of the dead dolphins were females of a reproductive age, and two had severe skin lesions.

Murdoch veterinary pathologist Dr Nahiid Stephens told ABC TV that the post-mortem examinations indicate that immunosuppression was evident in at least four of the dolphin deaths.

"This may be attributable to a range of factors, including viral infection, rapid seasonal changes in water quality, and long-term exposure to contaminants," Dr Stephens said.

"In comparison to contaminant levels reported in dolphins internationally, concentrations of dieldrin were high in tissues from three dead dolphins that were analysed for the presence of variety of contaminants," she said.

A spokeswoman for Murdoch University said researchers were working on a range of further tests to investigate the post-mortem findings and would be looking at whether an as yet unidentified marine mammal pathogen may be present, such as Cetacean Morbillivirus, a virus known to cause immunosuppression.
