Dream on Barra lovers!
Submitted by blaasoppie on Thu, 2009-10-01 17:30I am sure all you Barramundi fishermen will enjoy this one; my mates recently caught this nile perch on the Nile river in Uganda, Africa. The fish weighed 113kg's and could unfortunately not be released as a crocodile attacked it when they had the fish boatside. I caught a similar size fish in the same location, but 4 of us could not pick it up far enough out the water to get its true weight; weighed 84 kg's with 1/4 of the body still in the water.

advice please Re: beach setup
Submitted by gumbyconts on Wed, 2009-09-30 22:14hi all,
i was hoping to get advice for people in the know regarding a beach setup for b&b species and also anything else that might swim by such as salmon or mulloway.
being a poor student i was hoping to spend $200 on the rod+reel. i think ill go for braid as i couldnt feel any nibbles/bites today when i bagged myself some tailor (this may just be due to the fact that i have a $100 setup with shimano eclipse rod and some plastic reel). in saying this what strength line do you recommend?
i may be able to stretch the budget a little (maybe $300 rod+reel) with christmas fast approaching.
an all purpose beach rod would be good, something stiff enough to cast a decent size sinker, but also light enough to cast metals/minnows/poppers.
thanks in advance,
-Jay

Looking for a 6kg baitfeeder reel. whats should i be going for?
Submitted by Bungel on Wed, 2009-09-30 21:27Im looking for a reel to match a Composite Development (NZ custom rods) 6-8kg trigger grip 7 foot rod i have had for a little while. For LBG use.
Something small and light. Great smooth casting, enough beef in the drag to stop stuff on 6kg.
Was looking at the sl20. What are the other options that would be worth a look... Saltist 20h?
Any help, much appreciated. Cheers.

Gulp vs Slam
Submitted by Stevef on Wed, 2009-09-30 15:10A question for the soft plastic fishos.
Have any of you tried the Slam soft plastics / bio baits that are being put up as an alternative to the Gulps.
I have used the Gulps with a degree of success in deeper water (5" & 7" shads), and with a lot of success in close (6" worms) on skippy etc.
Just wondering if anyone has had a crack with the Slams and what the result was.
Cheers Steve

Shimano Handle
Submitted by Stevef on Wed, 2009-09-30 10:29Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has a old handle laying around that would a Shimano spinning reel in the 3000 or 4000 size. The reel is a late 90s vintage and has the type of handle with a square pin profile with a threaded centre which allows swapping from left to right handed.
I have twisted the shaft on my existing handlewhich makes it impossible to use.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers

Cray Pot Advice
Submitted by tonyb on Tue, 2009-09-29 21:05Looking at getting some new cray pots for this season. Have heard about round plastic ones with flat bottoms. Has anyone seen these?
I usually only fish of Lancelin on long weekends etc so I am not sure how good wooden ones would be. I believe you need to soak them for 24 hours before use so probably not an option.
I currently have plastic pots with average success. I have heard that covering them in shade cloth helps with plastic pots. Anyone tried this?
Any advice would be great.
Tony

Console modifications
Submitted by wayneleech on Tue, 2009-09-29 19:46Hi All,
I've decided to take the plunge and am attempting some modifications to the console on my profish 540. I've cut out an area to position my GPS and sounder. They were on the top of the console though in choppy weather my instruments would get wet, plus I have to take both the sounder and the GPS off the brackets every time I want to get the boat in and out of the garage as they would hit the roller door.
My plan next is to mount both the GPS and sounder in position and then I was going to get some aluminum sheet and box in the surrounding area to a) provide protection from the spray and b) to have them in the shade so the screens are easier to view in the direct sunlight.I was thinking of buying some aluminum sheet and some stainless steel rivets to box in the area.I was wondering if anyone has done similar ali modifications to their boats, eg, using rivets and ali sheets? Any comments/advice/pics would be much appreciated.
I don’t want it to look dodgy so I have thought about getting an ali fabricator out though thought I would try and save some $$$.
If anyone else has a centre, or side, console would be great to see some pics of their setups:)
Cheers
Wayne

Octo jig problems
Submitted by Mick on Tue, 2009-09-29 10:02G'day guys
Went fishing on Sunday in the shallows north of Kalbarri and finally decided to give the Octo snipers and a Lucanos a go. Plenty of hits but no bingo. They just didn't seem to hook up. Anyone else seen this problem or know how to rectify it. Ended up with 3 nice pinky's to about 700mm. Had an awesome experience with whales. We pulled up about 600m from a group of 3 to take some photo's and they turned and started coming towards us. within a couple of hundred metres they dissapeared. Myself and Leckie thought they buggered off only to have the absolute shit scared out of us with them popping up beside the boat. They circled around us a couple of times, then from the rear of the boat directly under us missing the bottom of the boat by bugger all. Leckie, a scotman with one hell of a broad accent, starting shitting himself. " This is joost fooking daft " in his broadest accent. They repeated this another 3 times and by then he had calmed down. Another couple of laps of the boat and off they went. Absolutely mind blowing
