Research shows some Ningaloo Reef fish are homebodies
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-06-19 12:27Media Release
New research shows that some fish species in Western Australia's Ningaloo Marine Park spend most of their time close to home, staying on the reef rather than travelling significant distances, as was previously thought.
18 June 2009
Since November 2007, scientists from CSIRO’s Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship have tagged over 300 fish in the Ningaloo area off WA’s North West Cape as part of a Western Australia Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) project.
CSIRO’s Dr Richard Pillans told the 8th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference held recently in Perth that around 40 per cent of tagged Spangled Emperor (an important sport fish, also known as nor-west snapper) remained within hundreds of metres of where they were originally captured.
“This is really exciting information as it provides evidence of a resident population,” Dr Pillans said. “Data from the tags also showed that highly mobile species like Gold Spot Trevally and grey reef sharks spent the majority of time within just a few kilometres of where they were tagged.”
The research aims to identify what influences the movement patterns and habitat use of fishes in the park, which encompasses the majority of Ningaloo Reef, the largest fringing reef in Australia.
The new data on the long-term movement patterns of sharks and other fish in the park will have important implications for future management decisions on the size and placement of sanctuary zones. Currently 34 per cent of the park is reserved as sanctuaries designed to protect marine animals and their habitat from human disturbance.
“We're working on gathering information that will inform management to assist protection of individual species and groups of species,”
Dr Babcock said.To better understand fish movement patterns and habitat use within the park, the Ningaloo Reef Ecosystem Tracking Array (NRETA) was established in 2007 as part of the Integrated Marine Observing System's Australian Acoustic Tracking and Monitoring System. NRETA consists of 104 acoustic receivers along the Ningaloo coastline and is Australia's largest array of acoustic receivers.
Fish tagged with internal ultrasonic tags are then able to be accurately tracked around the study site. Over time, the information collected builds up a picture of the individual's movement patterns.
Project leader, CSIRO's Dr Russ Babcock, said many other previously unknown aspects of the lives of fish on Ningaloo, such as where and when different species spawn, are being revealed.
"We're working on gathering information that will inform management to assist protection of individual species and groups of species," Dr Babcock said. "At the end of the study, we will be able to give the WA Department of Environment & Conservation a really good idea how fish and sharks use the marine park."

original hand-carved, painted,signed Fred Young 'Big-O' crankbait #2065
Submitted by fire.and.forget on Thu, 2009-06-18 04:05I have an original hand carved and signed by Fred Young balsa "Big-O"
crankbait. It was given to my grandfather by Fred himself at Calvary
Baptist Church in Oak Ridge Tennessee. Both Fred and my grandfather
were deacons there. It is also the church I grew up in. This lure has
been in a box, unused for over thirty years. My mother recently found
it. It is in excellent condition, and has never been in the water. I
contacted Pradco (Cotton Cordell) and spoke to someone named Ryan. He
said they would probably be very interested in the crankbait, and that
he wanted to contact his bosses first, then someone would be calling
me. Apparently they are assembling some type of museum exhibit and he
felt they may want it for that. I have contacted a few other
professional anglers and/or bass magazine editors, but haven't gotten a
definate answer yet. But I just started contacting people yesterday. My
quesion is...does anyone out there know what it's actually worth, and
would anyone be interested in buying it. I believe we have two more
somewhere, but so far I have only found the one. I believe Bobby Murray
(the man who originally knew Fred and brought the lure to Cordell
initially) is one of the people Ryan was going to contact. We're trying
to find something out about it before we have to talk to these people
from Pradco. I'd apprecitate any help! Thanks!! Gary My phone number is

HELP THE NEWBIES WITH YOUR FAVOURITE FISHING RIG
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2009-06-16 12:56With a lot of newcomers to the great sport of fishing joining Fishwrecked recently, and more likely to come on board, I thought I might start-up a string on tackle and rigs.
There are many members on here who have some fantastic knowledge and skills in putting together rigs and I am hoping you will have the time to provide some of the newcomers with some advice.
I know it may be difficult to describe some of your rigs with words, so if you are able to add a diagram or picture of your rig, it would be appreciated.
I will start it off with a couple of basic rigs that are always useful to have in your bag.
The running ball sinker rig
You can’t get much simpler than this. Take a ball sinker of whatever size suits the wind, current or wave conditions, place it on your leader line and let it run down the hook. This rig is dynamite for bream.
There are many variations including the use of small trace of leader line tied to the hook at one end and a swivel at the other. The ball sinker is then placed on your mainline, which is then tied to the swivel.
Some anglers also like to use glow beads placed just above the hook as an attractant.
SURF PATERNOSTER
This rig can be made up to suit a whole range of hook sizes and styles and different weight lines and sinkers.
The standard however, would be with the use of a set of ganged hooks.
To make up this rig you will need a good quality three-way swivel. The top loop of the swivel is tied to the mainline.
You then take length of monofilament leader (usually about 30 to 40 cm) and tie a loop knot in one end. This loop knot allows you to thread your sinker onto the line. The beauty of this is that you can change sinkers to suit the conditions. The other end of the leader is then tied to one of the loops on the three-way swivel.
A second piece of leader line (anything from 10 cm to 35 cm normally) is then attached the remaining loop on the three-way swivel. The other end of that piece of leader is then attached to your hook (or hooks).
SUPER SKIPPY RIG
This is fairly similar to the Surf Paternoster, with a few subtle changes.
For this rig you only require a normal two-way swivel. The top of the swivel is attached to your main line.
A piece of 10 to 20 lb leader of between 20 to 30 cm in length is then tied to the other loop of the swivel. You then tie a loop knot in the bottom end of the leader.
A twisted dropper, or normal dropper loop, is tied about 10 cm below the swivel and another about 10 cm above the bottom loop.
Cut two pieces of lumo tube that are about 3/4 of the length of your dropper loops and thread them onto the droppers.
Your hooks, normally about size 1/0 circle hooks are then threaded onto the dropper loops.
Place whatever size sinker suits the fishing conditions on the bottom loop, bait the hooks with bits of mulie, bluebait, squid or prawns and if there are skippy there you should catch some.
A light variation which can be used if there is not too much wind and the fish are biting midwater or close to the surface, is to place a set of gangs on the bottom loop instead of a sinker. Bait the ganged hooks with a mulie and this will act as an attractant, a potential fish catcher - and your sinker.
I look forward to reading about some other interesting rigs
All the best, Colin Hay

sounder LCX 37 broadband
Submitted by just dhu it on Mon, 2009-06-15 21:23Here are some recent photos of my new LCX sounder and broadband unit that i purchased prior to going to exy this year , we started trolling in 75 mts plus and then went out to 260 mts until we lost the depth indicator due to rough conditions but we were still receiving a bottom signal back. These arent as good as Andy Macs who copied on the drift , I havent yet tried to manual zoom as the depth was dropping to quick and i havent changed over to brown bottom colour record which allows all other colours to be used for all other fish etc, this is the best situation while trolling to experiment with your sounders capabilities

Broadband Sounder Pics
Submitted by Andy Mac on Mon, 2009-06-15 14:38Still trying to get the hang of the sounder, but so far getting some reasonable results. These are a few snapshots taken off a recording I did the other week.
I absolutely love the feature that lets you mark waypoints from the sounder. No more having to drive back along a snail trail to find a lump, this thing solves that problem very nicely.
The last pic being the result from the first spot.

me I just thought that been metro the price of things would be abit more lower. In the end I didnt buy anything till I got
