swan river bream on hardbody lure
Submitted by gone fishin on Fri, 2010-02-19 17:46hi all,
i have recently been getting into hardbody lure fishing for swan river bream with a fish caught every time, the issue is they are only small, 12-18cm. i use a light rod and reel combo 5Lb braid and 6Lb mono leader (wich i use for trout and perch) and use a white bait minnow design with a yellow back and a black spot around the back of the head. i use a slow retrieve WITHOUT twitching and cast into snags and reeds, it seems when i do use the twitch and retrive they are scared off, could any one please offer me some suggetions on how to land that big one.

Metal slices and herring????
Submitted by slothwan on Fri, 2010-02-19 14:42I was casting and trolling metal slices around near gardenisland today for the first time. I hooked onto about 20 herring on 10 to 15 gram slices, landed 2 but the rest i seemed to drop right at the boat.
Could it be that the trebles are too big? has anyone come across this?

Help needed
Submitted by doublej on Fri, 2010-02-19 08:03Hi all.
Had a post about a month ago in search of a Navman 5600 dash mount bracket.
Couldn't find one anywhere.
Anyway fellow fishwrecked member Rod P came through with the goods and happened to have a spare. (Not sure how)
but the problem is he lives up in Joondulup and I am down in Golden Bay. (Long way to travel for a bracket )
So just asking the question before I make the journey if anyone travells that way or is going up there or has any other idea's.
Cheers all in advance....Doublej

what fish would do this?
Submitted by grayzeee on Fri, 2010-02-19 05:56hey all
was out of mindarie and we were sat on a small lump in about 30 meters
two of us were fishing with 2 snelled hooks on 40lb mono traces (off 2 droppers) . saw a lot of activity on the sounder and dropped down. never felt a bite but winding in the rigs , the bottom hook had been neatly cut off as though somebody was down there with scissors. (no dive boat around
) this happened to both of us. re rigged and happened again , so i upgraded to 80lb , and same thing. no bite felt, absolutely no chaffing on any part of rig , just a neatly snipped off bait.
i was thinking bloody NW blowies but would be interested to hear what everyone else thinks.

Spinning reel
Submitted by mexican on Thu, 2010-02-18 22:00Looking for a spinning reel that I can use trolling for sailfish,Macks and mid size YFT.
Also with second spool for braid so that can bottom bounce in around 30 - 40 meters.
Considering Saltist 6500 & Saragosa 1400, Which would be better value and should there be anything else I should be looking at in that price range.
The thing that is swaying me toward the saragosa is the lower gearing.
Is Daiwa set to bring out the saltist in a lower geared model?.
Cheers.

Guildford Fishing
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Thu, 2010-02-18 21:20So I fished here today. Plenty of bites, but couldnt hookup on 3 different types of hook from snapper, circle or longshank, hardbody lures with attractant spray or sp with attractant. Baits used were prawns, bloodworms and mulie cubes. I was there from about 4:30-7:30. Can anyone give me any rig/bait advice before swanfish? :D I know its a big ask, but any help is appreciated:D
I also tryed some full prawn/jellybean size bait stuff too. At times I could see the line move six inches across the water and then spit the bait at any tension applied. Pretty much every cast got a tickle and a lot of lost bait. HB lures didnt seem to get hit, and neither did my attempt at SP with some 3" rootbeer minnows and camo bloodworms. HELP PLEASE!
PS. The new rod works great : Gladiator Snakeskin 2-4kg 7' Thanks Oceanside! I seriously thought I was going to catch a fish on the first cast, It just sucked and I would strike, come back, let it hit it longer, then stike - then let go. Over and over till bait went byebye.

Transport Minister inspects latest works on Indian Ocean Drive
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2010-02-18 13:53Transport Minister Simon O’Brien has inspected works on the new Lancelin to Cervantes road, due for completion later this year.
The $112million second stage of the project, which commenced in 2008, involves the construction of 65km of new sealed coast road, starting just south of Lancelin and extending north to Pinnacles Drive, 10km south of Cervantes.
Visiting the site today, Mr O’Brien said he was confident the road would be a hit with locals and tourists alike.
“When this road is completed it will be possible to travel from Perth to Geraldton entirely along a coastal route. This is bound to have significant economic benefits for local communities along the way,” he said.
Mr O’Brien said the construction of the new road would also ease pressure on the Brand Highway, currently the most direct route to Geraldton and beyond.
“At present the Brand Highway is a heavily-used freight route. However, when Indian Ocean Drive is completed, day trippers, travellers and other passenger vehicles heading into the areas near Lancelin and Cervantes will have another route to choose,” he said.
Heavy freight vehicles will be restricted from travelling on the Lancelin to Cervantes road.
The Minister said given the alignment was being mainly built through bushland, environmental concerns were a priority for the construction team.
“What we have seen is a number of enhanced construction techniques aimed at reducing any damage to the natural environment,” he said.
Mr O’Brien said works were being directly managed by Main Roads.
“There is currently a workforce of 135, including 24 Main Roads employees and 111 hired plant operators and labourers. The project has a strong safety focus and involves ongoing employee and industry training,” he said.
“The State Government is committed to delivering infrastructure projects to facilitate future economic growth and improve road safety.”

Nutrient magnet to reduce algal blooms in Canning River
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2010-02-18 09:36A Western Australian-developed nutrient magnet that blocks damaging algal blooms would be applied to hot spots along the Canning River this month.
The locally designed and trialled clay, known as Phoslock, attracts and binds phosphorus so algae can’t use it, stopping the damaging blooms before they occur.
Up to 50 tonnes of the clay would be applied this week over a 2.5km stretch of the Canning River where phosphorus concentrations are high from urban and rural land use.
Environment Minister Donna Faragher and Water Minister Graham Jacobs today announced the start of the $180,000 project, being jointly managed by the Swan River Trust and the Department of Water.
Mrs Faragher said Phoslock was a proven and environmentally friendly mechanism for reducing algal blooms and was a critical part of the State Government’s $3.19million plan to improve the water quality of the Canning and Swan Rivers.
“This kind of State Government funding for problem areas in the Swan and Canning rivers can make a significant difference to improving the health of the waterways,” she said.
“The Phoslock project is just one of many initiatives being undertaken by the Swan River Trust as part of its catchment-to-coast approach to river management.
“The clay was last applied to the Canning River in January 2002, and effectively removed phosphorus to prevent blooms of potentially toxic blue-green algae.”
Water Minister Graham Jacobs said Phoslock had been developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), in conjunction with the Swan River Trust and the Department of Water.
Dr Jacobs said the product had undergone extensive testing and appeared to be most effective in oxygenated areas of the river.
“This significant work has proven the worth of the product which is now approved for use in natural and drinking waters. It is being used worldwide as a corrective solution for nutrient rich waterways,” he said.
“Phoslock is sprayed as slurry, distributed from the back of a boat, removing phosphorus as it falls to the bottom. It settles to form a one-millimetre layer on the river bed, where it continues to strip dissolved phosphorus from the overlying water.
“It may cause the water to turn a milky colour for a couple of days, but it is not harmful to people swimming or fishing in the river.”
The sections of the river to be treated are upstream from the Kent Street Weir to about 800m beyond the Nicholson Road Bridge.

Help with tides & fishing over the weekend
Submitted by Helen on Thu, 2010-02-18 07:10
Hi Everyone,
I was thinking about going fishing somewhere in Perth over the weekend, but I just don't understand how tides work and calculating the best time of the day to go. If I look at tomorrow (Friday 19 February) for example, this is the times I get from The Angler's Almanac & the tide website someone posted up the other day.
Anglers Almanac
Based on what I decipher from the "How to use the tabels" section I make out that the best time to fish is 2:15am
http://tides.willyweather.com.au/wa/perth/swan-river--causeway.html
If I fish at Causeway Bridge the website above says high tides are 1:29pm (0.9m) & 9:29pm (0.7m)
http://tides.willyweather.com.au/wa/perth/canning-bridge.html
If I fish at the Canning Bridge the website above says 12:24am (0.7m) & 1:54pm (0.9m)
http://tides.willyweather.com.au/wa/perth/mindarie-marina.html
If I fish at Mindarie Marina the website above says 12:17pm (0.9m) & 8:17pm (0.7m)
I went to the Mindary Marina on Saturday 6 February in the afternoon around 2pm and stayed till about 5pm. I noticed that the book said 5:06pm and that at around 4:30pm quite a few people started treaking down. I thought it might have just been people heading over after a day at work, but they all looked like they knew what they were doing. I didn't catch a thing during the time I was there except a small fish I didn't get the chance to see because I water bird stole it off my line as I was reeling my line in. Grrrr.
I just don't get how it all works and why they vary so much. I also don't get how the water level works and why high tides have a 0.7m and so does low tide. I am so confused that I feel like a need a degree to go fishing.
Sorry to be painful
Helen

Scariest diving moment?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2010-02-17 19:29After the discussion the other week about the close encounter with the white, thought I would start up a thread to see who has had close encounters under the water, either be it shark scare, out of air coming up, shot a fish that was too big or something of those sorts.
I was diving solo this arvo and popped my head under a ledge to see a 2m long Queensland Groper shoot out and scare the living bejezus out of me. Followed him around for a bit after that checking out his size, absolute monster of a fish and would have been all of a couple hundred kgs. It certainly got the heart racing for a few seconds.

Monte's info
Submitted by Bodie on Wed, 2010-02-17 08:30Up in Ktown at the moment for work for 3 days.
One of the blokes i work with said to me 'long weekend in 2 weeks, interested in coming up for a 3 day trip to the monte's...
My obviuos respone was.. HELL YES..............but need to check with the wife first :) (big year on the fishing trips for me!!)
Anyhow just chasing a little info of the place, we have never been there and taking a 25ft glass console over.
Anyone able to advise a good bay to stay in? we will be in swags for the 3 days.
Ive heard you can no longer buy fuel over there??? anyone able to confirm if this is now the case?
And lastly fishing, As we've not done any fishing in that direction. Any info on general direction and area would be appreciated. Is it quite easy to navigate following GPS charts?
Mainly want to chase trout, on plastics and lures along with some mackies and maybe some GT's however i dont think ive get big enough gear to take on the big buggers Brad gets out there!!!
Are we best to pick a location for camp, and just return to the same location, or move about?
Is it worth hanging in close to the islands to target bottom species? ie: trout, Rankin, Reds?
Thanks guys.

19 minutes 21 seconds - world record for underwater freedive
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2010-02-16 21:05A Swiss diver has broken the world record for holding his breath underwater - for 19 minutes and 21 seconds.
Freediver
Peter Colat, 38, said the first 12 minutes without air were 'no
problem' after plunging into a water tank at a holiday fair in St
Gallen, Switzerland.
Mr Colat smashed the previous record held by Italian Nicola Putignano by 19 seconds.
Under
the rules for so-called 'static apnea' laid down by the Guinness World
Records, Mr Colat was allowed to breath pure oxygen for ten minutes
before the feat yesterday.
He said afterwards: 'The first 12
minutes were not a problem and I felt the first need to breathe very
late, but because of this it was even stronger.'
According to the British Freediving Association, participants must
'enter a very relaxed state so as to minimise oxygen consumption.'

Breathless: Under the rules of the record, Peter Colat was permitted to breathe pure oxygen for ten minutes before the feat
It
adds that: 'Eventually, the store of oxygen will reduce to critical
levels, resulting in hypoxia, and possibly black-out if the freediver
fails to listen to his body or ignores what he hears.'

Deckie wanted Thursday
Submitted by Anytime Brad on Tue, 2010-02-16 20:30Looking at heading out Thursday am for a fish, leaving woodmans point boat ramp. I haven’t been out for some time but usually head out past the 5 fathom to the 40m mark then work my way back in. Don’t have any killer spots but have usually found some ground. I usually bottom bash but would be open to any suggestions. Pm me if you are interested. At this stage seabreeze isn’t looking too bad. I have a 4.85 trailcraft which fishes 2 people very comfortably. Regards Brad.
