What to do next.
Submitted by cozzycozzy on Thu, 2013-01-03 15:30Hello all. i am in need of some help.
I bought a 7m boat at the beginning of september from a dealer in Mandurah. The boat has a 150 hp Mercury 2 stroke on the back that i was told was stripped down and re built in 2010. The engine was sold to me with 48 hours on the clock since the rebuild. I was told by the dealer that the engine was mechanically A1 and would serve me well for the next 5-10 years if looked after.
Last sunday we broke down and i have been told that the cylinder block is cracked and i am looking at a $5000 + repair bill. I have put no more that 6 hours on the boat since i have had it and to be honest i am gutted. After buying the boat i did every thing properly, bought an epirb, flares, life jackets etc etc. I joined fremantle sea rescue and insured it with club marine so i have no spare money to repair my boat that is now usless.
I have spoken to a guy called James from Collings marine who says that he has a second hand cylinder block but has quoted about $5000 to do the job. I was wondering if anyone on here has used Collings marine in the past and do i have any comebacks on the boat dealer. I just thought i would ask as i am all out of ideas.

<5m Runabout, any recommendations?
Submitted by bergerac on Tue, 2013-01-01 21:09Hi Guys,
Been lurking around here for a while but only just got around to signing up. Have had a makes old Seeker FG runabout on loan for a few months and it has really given me a taste for getting out on the water so Ive started looking for something of my own. Budget at the moment is around $10k and it has to be 5m or under as thats all the room ive got without knocking down my patio. Im leaning towards ali at the moment but am open to glass but I only have a Forester to tow it with and while it tows the boat im using at the moment it uses about 1/3 of a tank just to get to woodies so its going to be a bit over the top If I wanted to head further afield. Is there any hulls that anyone can recommend? Is it better to stick with the usual Quinnie/Stacer/Savage offerings?
Cheers

Project Boat
Submitted by tigerfish on Tue, 2013-01-01 19:24Although I have been more than happy with my tinnie over the last couple of years, there is no getting away from the fact that it is a pretty small and basic boat, and I had found myself longing for just a bit more space, stability and protection out on the water. Also, I figured the missus and some other non-serious fisho friends might be more keen to come out with me in a bigger, more comfortable tub.
Anyway, a few weeks back I was browsing the used boat ads on Gumtree and was coming to the conclusion that my budget (non existent really) wouldn't really stretch to anything much better, when I came across an ad for a what looked like a pretty decent old ally runabout that had been left sitting by its owner for the last few years at what seemed like a bargain price. On a spur, I gave the seller a call and headed straight out to have a look at it.
Condition was a bit disappointing, the paint was flaking and powdery, wooden sole (deck) was scrap (although the seller had already cut out new marine ply to replace the main sections), the windscreen was in pieces, and the donk on the back was looking very tired. Then I started to see the potential, the hull looked solid, the layout and space felt pretty good, and there was a very well built stainless steel trailer underneath it. After some negotations with my own 'minister of finance' and the seller, I was towing it back to my place the next day.
So here it is, a late 80s (I think) Savage Lancer 530 runabout, that will be my project for the next few months as I try to transform it into a comfortable, reliable and affordable upgrade from my tinnie.
Haven't had a chance to do much on it over the Xmas/NY break due to other priorities, but will be getting stuck in from now. Will definitely be looking for some advice and guidance from any experienced renovators and DIYers on some aspects of the project like painting, deck replacement and eventually repowering and fitout. In the meantime, if you have any general advice or ideas, please feel free to share.

mercury 15hp two stroke starting problems
Submitted by darrendd on Tue, 2013-01-01 17:15Gday Guys
I have just bought a savage snipe with a 15hp merc 2 stroke (2003). the motor was running fine yesterday and did half a tank ,starting first pull everytime! I was giving it 2 pumps on the bulb with the prime pulled out then on starting/firing pushing it in on initial start and then just one pull it would start(no priming). when i came home i took the cover off and checked the plugs which were only hand tight. i set the gaps to 1mm and retighened them. I cleaned the fuel filter out and changed the oil in the leg. It will fire up with prime/choke out then ill push it in and will run for 5 seconds then cut out!? the fuel is a week old and the motor made good power on the ocean. any ideas please ?? ive checked the tank breather and its clear!

Havent been out in the boat for 6 months or so due to shoulder surgery and was wondering what I should do with the 50 - 70 ltr of fuel still in the tank. Should I put an additive in the tank like stabil or suck it out and keep it for the mower and bikes.

Winch Cable Material
Submitted by pharlap on Fri, 2012-12-28 17:08Hey guys just wanting to know what you are all using on your trailer winches ie steel cable, this Dyneema strand cable or what else ?
I put a new winch on my trailer less than 12 months ago, and allready the cable is rusting up, and gave me some trouble at the boat ramp yesterday.
Also has anyone had any success with these self centering rollers ? Do you need them all the way along the keel rollers, or just the first roller or maybe the first 2 or 3 ?
I'm winching up an 18 ft fiberglass.
Cheers.

steering issues
Submitted by dakka on Fri, 2012-12-28 09:32howdy all
As i said yesterday in my fishing report, i lost the steering 8kms out. i had a quick look this morning, i am able to turn steering wheel and the cable goes in and out from the helm but no movement at motor end with cable disconnected, what would thus suggest a broken cable or helm is stuffed. i replaced both about 18 months ago.
cheers

Steering Cable
Submitted by pharlap on Fri, 2012-12-21 18:24Geez I'm having a great week.
My boats been up on blocks for the best part of this year while I completely stripped back and re firbed the trailer.
The boats been back on the trailer about a month now I'm starting to get a few maintenance things done that I wanted with it, and now the steering wheel as well as the outboard wont turn.
I cant have it that the cable has siezed as a month ago when the boat went back onto the trailer the motor was serviced for the 2nd time since I've had it in 12 months (I know overkill)
What can I do guys, i've read up about disconnecting the steering arm, and belting the cable arm end to loosen it, i've seen posts about heating up the sleeve arm.
I no tradie, I'm handy though.
What can I do guys ?

Fuel Line Setup
Submitted by pharlap on Thu, 2012-12-20 22:03Hey Guys, I'm fitting a fuel/water separator filter bowl and I want to get some ideas as to the best way to link it up.
Its for a 130hp johnson ocean pro 2 stroke V4.
I've been advised a few things/ways, the most common is to install it this way:
From the fuel tank pickup- fuel hose to- in line fuel filter-fuel hose to-fuel/water separator filter bowl- fuel hose to-primer fuel bulb- fuel hose into the outboard motor.
I've also been advised to install the primer bulb before the separator instead of after.
Which way is the best way guys ?
Also what size diameter fuel hose should I be Using for this size motor ?
Cheers Steve.

Fuel Filler Hose
Submitted by Dizzy on Wed, 2012-12-19 19:08I'm looking to replace the fuel filler hose that runs between the gunwale mounted Filler Cap and the bow mounted tank.
It's 17 years old and still in very good condition, but it runs through a storage compartment and makes everything in there stink of fuel - plus when the compartment is opened is stinks the cabin out..
It's the big rubber 50mm "Max Flo Road Tanker" hose, by Dunlop I think - mega heavy duty and probably serious overkill for the job.
(Same stuff you'll see coiled up on Fuel tankers etc)
I can source a new length of the same stuff at around $66/m but I'm hoping there's an alternative product that won't absorb and transmit the fuel smell.
The replacement needs to be flexible due to the routing, so fabricated metal pipe is not an option.
Suggestions appreciated. :)

Replacement Battery
Submitted by pharlap on Wed, 2012-12-19 14:11Hi guys I need to replace my battery on 1999 130hp Johnson ocean pro 2 stroke v4 outboard, I currently only run a single battery system for everything, motor, lights, electronics etc
Ive got nothing left on the current old battery to identify size, type brand etc, it is a sealed unit though.
Can anyone give me any ideas of what size I might require, which brand/s get a good wrap, and where is the best place/value to go buy one or is it a case of go to your local marine dealer.
If I knew what size I require I could do a ring around for quotes, but none of the motor manuals online I have found give me a spec. for this motor.
Cheers.

Liquid rollers spray
Submitted by Vinesh87 on Sat, 2012-12-15 19:50Sometimes its hard to get the boat off the bunks on the trailer if there isnt enough water. (The extended drawbar is coming)
I have read reviews of 'liquid rollers' spray. Has anyone used it, or a alternative to make getting the boat on and off the skids a little easier that is safe on the gel coat ?
Or anywhere i can buy it in Perth to give it a go ?
Cheers,

Battery Wiring Help
Submitted by joel88 on Fri, 2012-12-14 14:21Hi Guys,
So this may be hard to explain without a diagram but after some advice to whether or not this will work.
So I have a battery in my boat. It powers everything. I've just fitted a second battery with a selector switch. So now the positive cables that came off the first battery are connected to the COMMON port on the switch and positive from both batteries goes to BATT 1 and BATT 2. So that's fine but what I want to know is that the original battery is grounded inside the outboard and is all nicely sealed. I don't want to try and run my second battery ground cable to the same point on the engine so is it ok to ground the second battery to the first batteries ground? Keeping in mind the first battery is already grounded?
Thanks
