147kg Marlin on 10lb line
Submitted by Nickjg on Tue, 2011-06-07 21:45
I was watching a fishing show where a guy broke off to 3 marlin and finally landed one on 10lb line, was an awesome battle which took just under 2 hours to land! Has anybody else seen or heard anything like this? Or are these people exadurating a bit?

ive heard of it at the bill
ive heard of it at the bill fishing comps up north but i cant say id actually do it ... the poor fish would be nearly dead and not really worth keeping after that amount of time .. but if you was only tagging that might be different as you could leader it ,tag it and cut it off without it being exausted

I love it. Light line Bill
I love it. Light line Bill fishing is the pinnacle of sportfishing in my opinion. My best was and estimated 40 kg black on 6kg. This year the target is fish on 4 kg.
The Broome sailfish comp was a 6kg only comp for years and they used to get up to 100 fish a day caught so hardly anything new there. I think since braided lines have become popular people have forgotten some of the skills involved in real sportfishing.

And not the best for the fish
You have to run the fish literally to near death - I used to be a light tackle exponent (70lb sambo on 4kg, marlin and sails on 10 and 15 lb mono) but having seen fish caught and then sharked or die upon release I woke up to myself ...........now I fish in a manner I consider responsible and respectful to what I catch

Ignorant question?
Are the rods used also light rods - or heavier combos just with light line on the spool?

Need a lighter rod, you can't
Need a lighter rod, you can't keep a bend in a heavy rod with light line, no bend = thrown hook.

Reel Teaser landed an estimated 150kg black marlin on 10kg line in last years Broome billfish comp. The angler only 12yrs old and the battle over in 20min.

Dean Butler is highly regarded
as a light tackle guide and fisho. I have attached a link to his site. There is a pic there of a 733lb marlin caught on 6lb line (insane). Many lengthy debates have occurred over the years with respect to the ethics of light tackle and whether it is just stunt fishing. There is no doubt in my mind that to chase large fish on light lines you need to do your homework and be surrounded by a very slick team.

The teamwork and a skilled
The teamwork and a skilled skipper is the key. Then you just need the crazy leader/gaff man. Those are the blokes that do the hard stuff.
