1kd Toyota injector seals
Hi all,
Not directly fishing related but I know there would be plenty of crew on here who have hilux's, and prado's. Has anyone had the pleasure of replacing their 1kd injector sealing washers as yet? They sit between the injector and the cyl head. Over time they wear and compress to the point of not sealing 100% and your engine starts to start a bit like a tractor and can ultimately lead to oil pickup issues ect.
I have a hilux of my own and it has just clicked 120,000klms. Just starting to show the signs of the injector seals going so planning on swapping them out this weekend. Have any of you done these works yourself or arranged them to be replaced elsewhere? Any tips and hints would be appreciated.
after hours of googling and searching it would appear to mainly be the earlier models of 1kd engine which has the issue arise most commonly.
cheers

Ring Toyota
With your chassis number, can see if the injector recall (seats and seals) is relavent to your model and if it has been done, if not, takin it to a dealership will save u the hassel as the injectors can be diffucult to remove out of the head and sst is reguired. Otherwise its pretty easy, pipes off and out of way, losen clamps on side etc, pop the seals off around the inj pipes, rocker cover off, undo clams and pull injectors out. Clean any carbon off injectors and down in seat area, again sst may be needed if seats are stuck or cleaning required. I work at Toyota now and am just starting my first injector recall on a 120 as we speak haha. Theres a few other campaigns on hiluxs and prados too
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Not covered apparently
Only a very select few were part of the hilux recalls. There were more hiace's than hilux's.
i just picked up the top end seal kit this afternoon in preparation of tackling the job Saturday morning. There is a step by step manual online so hopefully should all go pretty smooth. My only fear now is that the shaft on one of the injectors has been eroded a bit due to blow by from the cylinder pressure. Time will tell on Saturday.

Make sure you return the same
Make sure you return the same injector to the same cylinder. You will notice 2 rows of numbers on each injector. When the injectors are fitted at the factory or new injectors are fitted that number is programmed to the ecu via a scan tool so the ecu can fine tune ( technically called compensation ) each cylinder. If you get the injectors mixed up your lux will run rough, have worse fuel economy and be hard to start

this issue only occured on
this issue only occured on the early model vehicles, after 2008 (cant quote exact month off the top of my head but can find out) the injector seat material was changed to stop this from occuring. if you vehicles is not in the recal range it means it was produced after the production improvement date and this issue will not affect you. ive been a toyota technician for 8yrs, a toyota certified common rail diesel master tech and have done this job plenty of times before and after the recall was released. if your injector seats fail completely youll find your vehicle blowing white smoke on startup. i am yet to see the injector seats fail on a vehicle priduced after the correction date.
if you are noticing a rough startup and idle especially when cold or a diesel knock and our vehicle was produced before 2010 then its more likely your ecu calibration file. this knock can start early or develope over time but an updated ecu calibration was released which adjusts cold start and warmup pilot injection values to rectify the issue. it can be reflashed by you dealership, only costs $75 and takes half an hr. this is commonly the actual reason behind people who say the injectors fail at 150000ks. i would strongly recommend contacting your dealership on the matter if you havent already. i would also strongly recommend not attempting this yourself, its all well and good having a guide loaded up on google but google wont fix it if something goes wrong.

For those that are interested
ended up doing the works myself (I did a diesel mechanic apprenticeship back in the day) and although it took about 5 hours to complete, she came up all good in the end. The number 1 and 2 injectors were the worst effected with their o ring and brass washer just about non existent any more. The ports in the head were a bit if fun to clean after identifying the two front injectors had been leaking for s while! However in the end all was ok. I wouldn't recommend the works unless you are very, very mechanically minded or have specific Toyota experience.
