2 stroke outboard issues when cold

Hey all,

Having some dramas with my outboard when its cold. Last 2 trips out i have started her up no dramas got to the heads at hillaries and its started coughing and spluttering (running ok till then) engine stalls and turn it over a couple of times and rev it up in nuetral and it ends up coming fine and making power as usual. It is fine all day after that!

any ideas? i thought plugs etc but its not on cold start its after its been running for awhile it just breaks down a bit then clears out and is fine. Runs like a dog for the couple of minutes while i rev it and its fine again?

Its a evinrude 90 1996 model.

It's pre mix into the tank the oil injection has been removed before i bought it and this has only happened since i have added fuel/mix recenlty. Running it at 50:1.

I thought maybe it hadnt mixed well in the tank at first but its happened twice now and i'm sure it would have mixed well on the first trip out.

Thanks

Brendo

Rough running

Hi, Brendo,Just a couple of thoughts, 1 how long from the last time you used it,? as you know, petrol evaporates, oil wont,so when you got back from the last use of boat you ran the motor, good, but unless you remove the fuel line from the motor to allow all the fuel/oil to be used the fuel(petrol) stays in the carbys, and jets, this then evaporates and leaves a kind of flake that can, block off the jets.So try to disconnect the fuel line from the motor after you run it with fresh water, then let the motor run till it runs out of fuel, this should burn all the oil and fuel, reconnect the fuel line, and prime fresh fuel into the line when you go out next time, also just check the seals around the fuel line connectors, there are some small o rings that can be damaged or will wear, these can allow air into the fuel line so borrow a spare F line and try a remote tank, good luckUndecided jersey, have a safe and Merry Christmas

air leak

Tue, 2008-12-23 14:51

Brendo, it sounds like it is has an air leak to me.  I agree get yourself a new fuel line and primer bulb, maybe change the fuel filter too (if fitted).  I'm not familiar with hillaries.  how far is it to the heads (5 mins ?).

By running the carbies dry

By running the carbies dry you are also running the engine lean which means less oil.  The next thing you could hear is a loud BANG and it will be all over.  Just start it once a month and all will be good.

Fuel goes stale. Even mixing

Fuel goes stale. Even mixing new fuel doesnt alter the bad fuel.

Check you engine specs for fuel mixture.

What are you plugs like? What color are they?

you can spike

stale fuel with octane booster to get it back to a usable state. Least preferred option, but something to consider if the situation arrives.

had the boat 2 weeks, used it 6 times already... am going to change fuel/water seperater tomorrow and plugs will let you know how it goes.

Will also check connections in fuel line incase a air leak it around.
