2 x Aircon issues plus plumbing.

 Howdy,

The ole lady has a few issues with air cons at her home.
Her split system will turn on run for a couple of minutes then stop.

The evap just doesn't turn on (worked last season) she gets quite a few power cuts
so that may have triggered something / blown a fuse up in the head unit...dunno!

Plus she has a prob with hot water in the cold pipes that I suspect could be a non-return valve from the solar HWS.

So was wondering if anyone on here that can do the lot.
Trying to save a few $'s by not getting a few diff tradies out and paying for callouts.

The solar HWS Co. that she rang told her that she'd be looking at $130 for callout!!!
I told her that that don't seem right be she was adamant that's waht they said.

She's 73 invalid pensioner so any help would be appreciated.

cheers in advance

What area is she in mate?

And yeah that's the higher end of what a call out fee will cost from most people, average is around $100.

Mate on the evap, check mice/rats havent chewed the cable to the roof unit from the little control panel. Apparently it happens a lot, as the low frequency it emmitts is like cheese to them!

Just happened with ours for the 2nd time.

Turn the water main of and pull the top off the non return valve and see if the flap is frozen in the open position, if so work it back and forth until in flops about easily then screw the top back on with a bit of thread tape to seal it

OK

Split system was new in 2008 (she's 2nd owner of house for the past 3 years), think it's a samsung.
It runs for prob 5 minutes then lets of a few beeps and shuts down.
Will have a look at the filters though.

Evap, doesn't have a wall control unit only a hand held remote.
The h/held shows that the batteries are fine but I'll take over a new set and try that.

SHW, will pull the cap off the NRV and open it up to have a look.
Asked her again about the hot water and she says that if she gets up early in the morn say 5am
to water the garden, the water will run warm/hot and can do so for up to an hour.
Once it's cleared it's fine during the day except for the normal heating the mains pipe gets from
the hot weather which doesn't take long to clear.

thanks

If the split actually runs,

If the split actually runs, I.e compressor comes on and is cooling, quickly go outside and check to see if the fan on the back of the condensing unit is spinning. If it isn't but the unit cools for a minute or so it may be a dodgy fan or capacitor.

The evap could be any number of things. A fried board, a blown fuse or even may just be that the remote has lost comms with the main board.

Where is she located?

Turned on split on cool setting and the fan outside doesn't spin!
I wouldn't say the air that was coming out of the split was cool at all
but I didn't run it for long incase it would do any further damage.

Swapped batteries out on the remote for evap but still nothing.
Can see the WIFI logo flashing when it tries to send a comand but nothing happens.

She's in Morley!

fan motors arnt that expensive - $50 - 80

Wed, 2014-02-12 18:46

same with a capacitor $10 - 30. need to volt check it to see where the juice is (or isn't!)
expect to pay for a service call , the time to go and get the correct part (if in stock) and then rebuild.
probably 2 -3 hundred as a cashi.

If it's an old Bonaire and you are not getting anything as previously said it could be a number things, I would get up on the roof and try the remote closer to the unit, turn it on cool and see if the water pump turns on, make sure you have turned the water onto unit first, there should be a tap near the eve, if this does not work it's either a bad capacitor, fried board or the motor is stuffed. Sounds like a job for a tradesman

 Just an update...

Big thanks to sstevee for sorting out the evap and looking after the ole lady.
Ended up being a fried board.

Samsung came out yesterday and fixed the split under warranty.
A bug had shorted the board on that unit!

Just need to get the hot water sorted then she'll be right.
