200hp Mercury optimax oil consumption

Hoping someone can help me with some info

im currently in the market for a new boat and I have found one that ticks all the boxes but want some info on the outboard.

Can someone please give me an idea of what sort of oil consumption a 2011 200 hp optimax will use. As I was hoping to get a 4 st but this boat is exactly what I'm after and just want to be aware of all ongoing costs before committing

please don't turn this into a don't buy a 2st thread.

Thanks

rod.

 Probably would work out to

Probably would work out to be around 60:1 at full rpm less if your at idle etc

Can't help with the oil...

Sun, 2014-01-12 15:54

...but there was a bloke on here a while back who had air compressor dramas with an older opti...don't know if Mercury's done anything to rectify that but I'd be doing some research on that as well...think it cost him $600-$700 to replace....

I have heard the bigger Etecs (similar technology) are a bit heavy on the oil...mine's only a 90hp and just sips it so like I said, can't help you with firsthand experience.

Newer 2 strokes

Use less oil generally. There is nothing wrong with modern 2 stroke engines.

I have an injected 50hp 2010 yammy, and my father in law has a 20hp 2012 yammy, and both of these motors use a 100:1 fuel oil ratio.

Optis

I have twin 200hp optis about 600hrs from 2009 use probably 10l of oil per 500l of fuel used for both.  Had issues replacing neutral overspeed sensors and ignition coils were all replaced within first 100hrs since then they have been war horses and would never go back.  Awesome to have that extra grunt, they are a bit smokey after a while idling and dont like low revs under say 2800rpm but they love a heavy loaded boat.  Ps. Have had 4 sets of 4st yamahas in my last three boats and optis match them for fuel efficiency.hope this helps

 Hi Rod

I had the same situation a couple of years ago. Found a boat I really liked with a 2009 200 opti on it.

I have had the same issue as spongeguts with a neutral overspeed sensor replaced at about 500 hours. Mine has nealry 600 on it now and has been pretty much bullet proof apart from that. Mine definately prefers cruising revs but it is excellent on both fuel and oil, 50/60 to 1 or better in some cases. It pushes my 21ft Reef Runner past 40 knots without too much of a problem and I haven't had any issues with smoke at any revs. Having previously had a Honda 4 stroke the Opti makes more noise but it has a heap of grunt.

Know someone with 150 opti

And he comments on how little oil it uses, a little noisy but the pick of the DI two strokes IMO.

I'm onto my second 200 opti

Mon, 2014-01-13 06:40

I'm onto my second 200 opti now. Done 1500hrs on the first one. Had two compressors go on that one but I believe that has been sorted in the newer models. I have done 300hrs on the latest one and have just had to replace two coils. Interesting the other guys have had similar issues. Pretty happy with them overall, after 14 odds years of having one I have only had a couple of issues. Oil use is about the same as others had said around the 50/1.
