bunker bay
I been down in bunkers for the week end and there is plenty of salmon here there just hiding away from the dolphins or nursing there wounds from the dolphins right up in the reefy rocky area on the right end of the bay. I had a good sesh yesterday only landed 3. A bloke and his mrs took ten home and the guys on boats were hooking them till dark. Its a fair treck up there but worth it I think.

"A bloke and his mrs took ten home"?
Have they changed the rules again? I thought it was 4 salmon per angler? Anyways, my observations down at Meelup midweek were the same as everybody else's...drips and drabs, couldn't reach 'em with the softies and they weren't interested in the chisel plug.
Fingers crossed they get up to West End this year...

yeah its 4
yeah I'm pretty sure it's 4. I didnt want to cause a poo storm by mentioning nationalities and my views on the situation. But I did have a chuckle when he had to tie a rope round his waist and he and his mrs each had to drag 20kgplus of stinky salmon and 12ft beach gear all the way down bunker bay to their car.

I hate these people who take
I hate these people who take more than they are supposed to. What are you gonna do with that many Salmon? They don't freeze. They hardly taste good fresh.
I heard of a bloke taking 12 Tailor the other night from a mtero location, 4 over 50 and he is a true blue Aussie shanker! Again what are you going to do with that many Tailor that tastes like poo after you freeze them.
I just go up to people now and tell them how much the fine is for one fish undersize or over you quota. Then leave it at that, if they really annoy me I take their rego and I ring fisheries. Sometimes they catch 'em.
Now all we have to do is stop the commercial fishing of Salmon and we'll grow a mutli-million dollar tourist industry for the SW every autumn. Much more profitable than cray bait!

Not sure why people think
Not sure why people think stopping the pros will make the fishing better for salmon.
If you can't catch a salmon and think its because of the pros maybe you should question your fishing ability.

Maybe it is because you turn
Maybe it is because you turn up to the beach and see 2000 salmon dead, and then dont see any other schools?

It comes
down to their livelihood vs your recreation. Simple really.

Not that simple ...really
When you think about the amount of money that is interjected into southwest tourism and tackle stores for the Salmon run way more could be made for the economy. I ask any team of mates that head down there to add up what they spend on accomodation, fuel, bait, lures, food etc and realise that's a massive injection into Southwest businesses and tackle stores. Tackle stores, which I remind everyone has had to take losses from the demersal ban. In fact stores all through central and southern WA would get a boost from rod and lure sales every year. Should we all go back to riding horses so blacksmiths can have a livelihood? No, that industry is dead a long time ago. Time to move on create a newer oppurtunities which will help grow our country areas and support everyone. That's my belief as well as many others in the SW.
Commercial fishing effects tourism and the ecomony.. fact. How much do people on here spend up big to go up North cause the fishing is so good? Would you go if there was no fish? Mulloway are hard to find in the SW and the blame is being squarely laid on commercial fishing bycatch of this magnificant species. Trawlers coming in close into the bay effected many species in years gone by.
And Choc, if they are not there then you can't catch them. We have made changes for the better already (see appendix below)
Proven examples:
Port Phillip Bay: Commericial scallop dredging almost killed the snapper fishing, been banned thatnks to the hard work of Rex Hunt and other reccys now it;s going off! The tourism, tackle and charter industry over there is awesome. And everyone is catching fish!
Sydney Harbour: Commercial fishing banned for, wait for it, toxins in the water. That's right, the government had to ban it to stop them selling the toxic fish to the public for their 'livelihood'. Now the catch and release fishing in the habour is awesome also. Tailor, kingfish, salmon are all making a huge comeback as many would have seen on many fishing shows.
I am sure there are arguements to the contrary, but that just makes it a fact that it is very....complicated actually!
FYI: I do not work for any tackle stores or any commercial fishing company, does everyone here declare their affiliations?
Appendix:
"State Government imposed the ban between Port Geographe and Black Point east of Augusta saying that it would resolve a long-standing conflict between recreational and commercial fishers. This decision is going to effect 11 commercial operators. Department of Fisheries Regional Manager Phil Shaw says they will be restricted to an area between Port Geographe and Tim's Thicket south of Mandurah. He also told that there was a similar resolution made last year where salmon fishing was banned between Port Geographe and Cape Naturaliste so it will basically mean there'll be no beach based fishing in that area where there's going to be a high level of recreational activity. Shaw says there has been some opposition to the ban but fishers will be compensated. The government has announced that the affected fishers would be compensated."

I only commented on the pros
I only commented on the pros fishing for salmon in wa.
Im not sure what you mean by if they are not there you can't catch them.
The numbers of salmon are still the same as what they have been every year,it's just they are in different locations due to water temps, nothing to do with over fishing.

First ever Salmon
Was at Eagle Bay over the weekend and caught my first ever Salmon. Quite a few caught too. Boats were getting too close and ruining it for a few people. Don't understand why they don't fish from the shore.

boat
Boat fishing for Salmon is just as much fun as chasing them from the shore, if not more enjoyable in my opinion. I always make sure I'm out of casting distance though i can see the frustration factor from shore when the boats are hitting school after school that are just out of reach for the guys on the beach.

Doubt they will get this far
Doubt they will get this far north this year. Next year should be decent if we stay in either fairly neutral or into el Nino conditions next summer.

I gotta agree, Simmo...
...starting to get to the point where if we haven't seen any decent numbers in the metro by now, we probably won't. The flurry of fish in the Capes/Geo bay region is encouraging, however...we didn't have any of that over the past few years, which tells me that the whole thing is starting to cycle back to, as you said, El Nino conditions/weakened Leeuwin Current/cooler water/less northern species coming down/MORE SALMON!
We may still see a few schools coming through places like West End and Coventrys this season, but next year should be heaps better and most of the metro anglers should be able to make a good fist of it if they put in the time, and the following few seasons should be better again.

Salmon mayhem
Ban the commercial fishos from netting salmon I saw them netting 7 ton on Friday on Cheynes and their truck was full so they trew around 300 salmon back in the water all dead because they did not have more crates
Locals say theirs no coin in these fish anymore they dont know why their still trying tho. My question is how can they be aloud to put a net behind the surf and leave it their overnight?
Disgrace is all I can say.
