 Had a 04 75hp merc 4 stroke

Thu, 2015-06-04 19:12

Had a 04 75hp merc 4 stroke which lve only replaced 4 months ago after it blew a head gasket.

Bought boat and motor 5 years ago with 230hrs on it and in that time l put 800 plus hrs on it.

Only thing needing replacing in that time was a regulator/rectifier and a trim switch. Motor ran flawless for over 1000hrs. Problem l suppose is what you cant see inside motor. Internal Corrosion probably killed it over time even though it was flushed religiously.

Replaced with a new 90 suzuki.

 2003 Yam F115 with about

Thu, 2015-06-04 20:27

2003 Yam F115 with about 500hrs, faultless other than a minor Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), fixed with multimeter in 10 minutes.

2005 Suzuki DF115's x 2, 700hrs. Stuck thermostat gave an overheat alarm, replaced them and the steel plugs in exhaust with alloy ones-faultless otherwise.
Both of these particular models are probably the longest serving 4 strokes built (F115 was built for 14 odd years and just superceded)

Will do 4000 to 5000 hrs in commercial service when they are running regularly (and hard) Sitting around for months on end not running will send anything to an early grave, and doesn't this describe most outboards on rec boats? Gearboxes will wear first, around 2000 hrs will probably  see a rebuild necessary, but they are cheap compared to a motor replacement.

1000 hrs is nothing on these motors if serviced correctly (big IF)

 If your looking at upgrading

Thu, 2015-06-04 21:47

If your looking at upgrading to a 4stroke and concidering a second hand motor l would say save your money till you can afford a brand new motor.

I concidered a second hand motor 80 to 100hp but when there asking 8/10k plus fitting for a 6/7 year old motor that could have hidden problems, no service history it didnt make sense $$$s wise. I got a brand new 90 suzuki fitted for 13k. Best thing l did. 5 year warrenty piece of mind.

2007 yammy f60

Fri, 2015-06-05 16:01

Ive got a 2007 yami 60efi.  2200hrs still going strong.    Service myself  new oil and filter, fuel filter and gear oil every 100hrs religiously, around 50 dollars oil and filter, fuel filter around 50 dollars. Every 300hrs I replace the water pump I buy a whole kit costs around 90 dollars.  Spark plugs at 300hrs around 30 dollars.  I take it to the local outboard mechanic to do the timing belt at 1000 hrs cost I think 300 dollars to change and do valve clearances.   Flush every time on muffs till warmed up,  found using hose connector  did not flush properly and thermostat plugs up.  Never flogged it sit on around 4300 cruising.

Hey Nath, the used Yamis do

Wed, 2015-06-10 08:26

Hey Nath, the used Yamis do tend to hold their value very well, but I would recommend having any used unit checked by an independant marine technician for your own peace of mind.  We just sold a 2003 F50 with 500 hours for 4K fitted, so it really depends on the condition of the engine, sevice history etc.  Also if you are buying from a dealer, ask if they will warrant the motor.

What size engine do you need mate?

Cheers, Stew.

Hi Nath, sorry have'nt been

Hi Nath, sorry have'nt been on the forum for a little while, tied up with a tender submission.....joy!!

I guess time will tell re the longevity of the newer 4-Stroke engines, only been around (Yami wise) since 1999, so I guess we'll have to wait another 20 years to find out!

Certainly in terms of hours they seem to stand up quite well, we see many commercial engines with 2,000 to 3,000 hours and still running strong.

Cheers!

 HONDAI've had 2x50 hp  a 115

Wed, 2015-07-15 18:13

 HONDA

I've had 2x50 hp  a 115 hp and 2 90hp some brand new some second hand.  Not had a single prob with any and these have all been carbie models so latest efi would only be better.  I haven't purposely  bought that brand. .. just when deals have arisen that's what's been available.  Couldn't be happier but I'd suggest alot of 4 stroke motor owners will twill you the same.  If i had my cove for current boat Id go Suzuki 140... chain driven .. ultra reliable.  My 2 cents for ya.  Cheers Pez
