i have one quote of $6k and another quote for an open deck/transport for $3630 from Victoria to perth

i have a boat that im super excited about but dont know if its worth freighting over, has anyone has experiences with insurance and gravel damage???

CBC Interstate

Wed, 2015-06-10 11:21

We bought our boat from Vic, a Haines 650R.

It was transported over by CBC Interstate, cost was about $5K.  Our boat was new, the dealer did a great job of shrink wrapping.  No damage to the boat at all.

surfymuzz, boat transport

Hi guys,

I have used the website that puts a call out to anyone & everyone for freight all over Australia, previously for my work getting goods moved east / west & north / south. Great for containers & plant etc, but I would NOT use for my boat. You could end up with Joe Bloggs coming back with your gear on a not so reputable transport company. Stick with the $6000 option, don't let it just sit on the back of a truck. Get the seller to take lots of pics after it is loaded, so you can track any damage done

I looked into freighting and

I looked into freighting and decided to drive over and tow it back. As strange as it sounds it was a great roadtrip. Good to see the otherside of Australia via road.

We expressed it over to adelaide (2 days) and took our time coming back (4days).  Slept at a roadhouse Donga on the way over and used the boat as a caravan free camping on the way back. Roadhouses on nullabor have toilet and shower facilities.   Had a car fridge full of beers, food etc.

I stipulated in the purchase contract that brakes and bearings were to be fully overhauled and tyres to be in good condition or repalced.  Brakes/bearings were fine but we suffered 2 blown tyres.   On inspecting the tyres they were date stamped  6 years old but looked brand new, closer inspection and theywere riddled with hairline cracks.

New tyres definately something to think about,, or at least a couple spares. Spares can be had from any roadhouse or country town but sizes/quality are limited.

we had no dramas except the tyres and would definately do it again.

did you express it from melbourne//sydney to Adelaide then picked it up from Adelaide?

what did that set you back?

 think he means they drove

think he means they drove straight to Adelaide then took their time coming back.

It is a great drive across the Nullabor, nothing like youd expect.
Ive done it several times and loved it everytime (in the winter at least!)
But if you are going to pay $6K freight, it isnt really a bargain anymore and same price as getting one in WA isnt it, that you can checkout or thru a dealer with some sort of warranty

yeh the pricetag isnt as good as it seems with these freight costs

i havent seen many trophy 1802's in WA

is it because they are a bit to small for our conditions?

theres a lot more over east

yep my cruisecraft was in

Wed, 2015-06-10 12:55

yep my cruisecraft was in adelaide, wasnt any in WA.

was definately cheaper than freighting,,they still wanted circa 6k from adelaide. I'm sure it cost less than 2k and the experience was worth it.

You should be able to work out the cost pretty easily if you know your lt/100km.  double it for the trip back. Take some jerries to fill and use on way back if you dont have long range tanks or to allow for horrendouse headwinds,  add in a couple of donga nights$80-$150, Car service, $20 night to "caravan camp" at the road houses (shower, toilet), I took 2 spare hub/bearings ready to bolt on and tools to do it, also some shade cloth, cable ties and rope to tie from the winch post back to the mudguard (workerd well)

I have 180lt tanks so i could  avoid the $2lt diesel nullabor roadhouses. most i paid was $1.50, also had a couple of 20c off vouchers which was handy in perth and adelaide metro caltex's

If you have the time, a good mate/wife/girlfriend/family etc  and want a new experience,, give it a go.

Melbourne to Perth

Hello Surfymuzz

Did exactly this just under 2 years ago. See the below posts. Particularly read my post titled the journey: http://www.fishwrecked.com/forum/rules-towing-used-boats-and-trailers-east-wa

PM me if you like. I know all the registration issues/rules, best routes, stops etc, insurance issues that need sorting before etc. It was a great experience and well worth it. Stones etc are not much of a problem but I can give you a tip on what I did which was easy to do (have pics).

Yep as I found finding a transport company that would bring it over cheaply was impossible -tried so many.

By far the cheapest option was rail but how you get it there and then how they put it on is a concern. I was also advised that it was best to shrink wrap the boat (costly) as the trains can flick up rocks onto the vehicles they carry.

The actual cost of transport ultimately led me to drive to Melbourne and use the trip as holiday with the wife. I am glad we did it we it is a fantastic experience.

2 bits of main advice if you go this path:
1. Avoid summer its way too hot (we went in early October-it was good).
2. Do the trip over at least 10 days or more so you get to enjoy the sights on the way on the bight, Melbourne etc.
3. Avoid to much night driving lots of roos in certain parts.

Regards

 Hi SurfymuzzWithout going

Wed, 2015-07-15 18:02

 Hi Surfymuzz

Without going into super detail I drove over in 2005 to Hampton Melbourne from Bunbury and return.  I own a 97 Paj T/d2800. Did the drive in 3 days with one night in a motel at Pt Augusta. Coincidentally diesel was at $1.40 a litre. All up the venture cost me $1450 . Slept in the Paj as i could level the seats.  I took 3x20 L jerry cans an engel plus a couple of ingenious devices. ... a coffe cup that heated coffee via cigarette lighter socket + Red bull! 3 days there and 3 back ... long hours but it was awesome. .. every Aussie should do that drive.  I towed my 5m Sharkcat back. .. extra hours they time zone changes  Benedict on the row back at 90 kmh in 4th on cruise control.  I also liked at every angle... driving hire vehicles back over after flying etc.  Anyway if you'd like more details either pm or ring me on 0419923191. Inputting from a Samsung Galaxy isn't the quickest way to provide details.  Btw Mundrabilla and Nundroo owned by SAFF ... SA Farmers Federation. .. fuel was as cheap as Perth at the time....  gotta love those guys.  Cheers Pez
