4wd advice

G'day All,

Will be chasing a 4wd soon.

Just wondering what everybody's advice would be if they had to buy one with about 30k to spend.

would prefer a turbo diesel, unsure whether to get a wagon or a dual cab ute.

Not really into climbing mountains, just a beast that will drive over sand and dunes.

Have been told an 80series turbo diesel, the only problem being they are now getting pretty old and most of the ones i see advertised have well over 300 000k's.

Everybody's input appreciated

Cheers

Thanks fellas,

The toyota's seem to be the pick of the bunch.

Just for sh!ts and giggles went up to the local ford dealer this morning to get the sales pitch on the new ford rangers.

Get this, 6 month waiting list to get one. no vehicle available for a test drive, dunno about you guys but i wouldnt be ordering stuff all unless i could at least drive one first. Nt much of a sales pitch if u ask me...

Go the 6.2L or 6.5L Brunswick

Sat, 2013-02-23 16:28

Go the 6.2L or 6.5L Brunswick diesel.....

Get onto Gumtree and type in Brunswick in search bar..

Usually get some decent cruisers / patrols etc that have been upgraded to these engines!!!

Usually see the decent ones between 20k - 30k...

Yeah the cars have a few miles on them... but usually there is less than 150 thou on the replacement brunswick diesel engines!!!

For Practability I'd go a duel cab with ute body. Good for all your fishing gear etc.

I'd go for a nice dual cab

Sat, 2013-02-23 17:47

I'd go for a nice dual cab 4x4 ute. Ranger, triton, hilux, colarado or whatever out of the top makes you prefer. I've got an 08 ford ranger xlt (which go for around 30k) and I love it. It's done 130k now and still going strong, goes good off road and tows the boat no worries at all. Also having a dual cab is best of both worlds, can cram 5 people in and still able to put a fair bit in the tray.

Sat, 2013-02-23 19:02

Hey Paul is that the turbo diesel? I like the look of them. How's the room in the rear cab? I've got a 2010 Triton turbo diesel and it goes like a shower of shit. Same things tows my 5.4m quinnie loaded up beautifuly. Have just put some Coopers on and it eats the beach.

If you dive, the dual cabs

If you dive, the dual cabs are especially great, no worries about wet gear in the cab.

 Yeah mate 3lt turbo diesel.

Sat, 2013-02-23 19:30

Yeah mate 3lt turbo diesel. The room in the back is pretty average and tight, nowhere near as good as the tritons, the tritons have the most room from what I've seen. It's pulled my boat through some pretty soft sand and done some pretty dodgy beach launches up north. It's great on fuel if not towing but with the boat behind the fuel acconomy goes down hill. 10l per 100km's compared to about 15-18l per 100km's depending on how you drive it. But still does 100km per hr up hills with the boat behind. Love the car tho, will be keeping it for a while longer!

I got the new bt50 and test

Sat, 2013-02-23 20:28

I got the new bt50 and test drove the new ranger. The ranger rode a little better otherwise identical. But for the same car the bt50 was 7 grand cheaper. This was over a year ago. I get 10-11 L/100 towing a 2 tonne trailer around. Done 50000 in the first year.

Ditto mate - I just got a top-of-the-range BT50 GT for significantly less than the mid spec Ranger XLT.

Got fed up with Ford dealers' arrogance at not trying to make sale or even get a test drive.

(they don't need private sales, the mines and construction companies are swallowing them all up - we're on a big construction project and it's Ranger city)

BT50 so much better value - no compulsory accessories like on the Ranger XLT (we didnt need sports bar, and always get spray in liners, so factory drop-in liner on Ranger was not needed either.

Main issue for me was the compulsory Ranger towbar (on XLT), which is f#cking woeful, absolutely screwing the departure angle and turning the ass-end of the vehicle into a grader.

Stiffer ride on BT50 but actually handles better and the ride is all good when loaded up.

BT50 ain't real pretty, but grows on you and actually looks very tough with bullbar.

Performance of both is unreal - spec incl standard rear diff lock is just miles above anything else in the same class.

Both now have 3.5T tow capacity too (3.35T prior to 2013)

The 6-speed auto is fantastic

Yer I have found mine handles

Sun, 2013-02-24 11:16

Yer I have found mine handles better with the trailer on. The springs like a bit of load. I love mine, drag people off the lights no prob with the trailer, overtake at 140kmph piece of piss. I like the look of mine, I got a nudge bar/spotties but they definately need a bar of some sort.

Yep, definitely not the magic

Sun, 2013-02-24 15:27

Yep, definitely not the magic carpet ride of my Discovery 3 TDV6, but so far ahead of the old work trucks that the disco will now go to the wife, sell her car and the BT50 will be my daily drive.

Certainly makes the long kms I'm doing for work at the moment much more bareable and with the overtaking zing it takes out a lot of hesitation and increases safety while also making sure I don't get stuck behind a road train for any longer than I have to, even with a tub / canopy full of gear.

I was told by my mechanic to go the BT50 or better the Ranger.

every 4x4 has their pro's and con's but it comes down to ndividual preferance.

i personally wont go the mitsi or holden and will stay well away from the great wall .

Another option is the VW dual cab 4x4. have heard some great reports about these, smaller motor but plenty of torque

I've worked for vw for over

Wed, 2013-02-27 12:33

I've worked for vw for over a year.  I'd tend to stay away from the amarok.   Servicing is horrendous, they have lots of problems with the turbos actuator valve putting the vehicle into limp home mode. Under warranty, but as parts are ex Germany you're talking 6 weeks without a vehicle.  The 2L is underpowered and not enough torque.

Pick of the bunch is the ford ranger.  I couldn't afford one so opted for the new Colorado.   $38k with all the gear and will tow 3.5T.  I get 9.3L/100km daily driving and 9.8L/100km with the boat on (5.2m cuddy cab fibre glass).

have fun test driving.
